Lateral offset

Unbalanced cam adjusted frontal lower arm must have caused lateral displacement of frontal axle geometrically,so to speak lateral offset, if the camber values may be set at desired values. Left lower arm is set inside compared with right one.

In case of presence of lateral offset of axle F/R, four wheels were set not on squared rectangular but deformed one, positioning on the corners of Rhombus.
However hard the effort on wheel alignment adjustment on Rhombus, it would be in vain.

Consequently this unbalance on VW 1302 Super Beetle would be corrected on coming Thursday, it would be done in accordance with the procedure of tie rod end replacement on both side.
I hope the no gripping suspense and unreliable steering action now would be far improved after the working in the evening on Thursday.

Enjoyment on 34PICT3

Very slight adjustment on air volume adjusting screw affects on the 11AD motor performance so much in combination with the automatic choke module angular position. Now the effect of the choke is a slightly less.

Considerable improvement in the accelerating transition was observed after upper adjustment comparing with computerized recent model's motor performance.
It's the best interest for me to bring out the ultimate performance of the combustion engine as originally designed by the factory.

Adjusting Bocar 34PICT3

I have realized again that how much sensitively the air volume control screw responds by very slight rotation, 1/8 turn clockwise changed all the responses that I felt inconvenient this morning.

The very initial stage after cold starting in the morning gives me good information about the mixture ratio, because the automatic choke system activating stage supplies richer mixture as designed.

Naturally my Beetle goes well under richer mixture condition, it goes without writing, but this stage gives me indispensable information if the mixture was rich what kind of drive feel would be served? And the opening stage of choke flap is the same important moment at all.

Careful checking on this choke opening stage gives me some forecast that how much richer would be the best?
Of course sharp and keen sensitivity is required on earth.
Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor in VW 1302 Super Beetle is so adjusted day by day as to be in the sweetest best condition.

Consideration on All Wheel Drive Design

In case of all wheel drive construction with automatic trans-axle,
active torque split, the torque distributed changes occasionally.
So, the wheel alignment and constructive geometry must be more firmly established compared with two wheel drive automobiles.
Otherwise the steering reaction changes all the time according to the torque distribution F/R.
In short, the adjustment of wheel alignment is not an easy task for the engineer if compared with ordinal automobiles.

According to my experience, more than ten times the adjustment procedures were performed for these ten years.
Though difficult as it is after the establishing of alignment and geometry, the straight running performance is above words, just like an arrow it goes straight, of course this is because of all wheel driving train.

Mechanical device

After some experiences of smooth motor control of NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz, that's fully computer controlled nowadays automobile, Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor in VW 1302 Super Beetle shows defects on earth. It's impossible to compare each other in any phase.
The transients from low to middle and from middle to high is not so smooth as Vitz, so I felt this morning.

Much more precise adjustment and firm setting must be done.
The key to success on the mechanical carburetor is the mixture setting on the very initial stage, idling mixture setting!
The lower the atmospheric temperature fall down, the richer fuel mixture is required.
1/8 clockwise rotation on air volume control screw would improve all the responses that had been caused because of leaner fuel mixture.

Japanese noodle shop was constructed at Miyama Road Station with good dishes including Grilled Ayu-fish.

Typhoons are coming near by Japan, they may change climate from Summer to Autumn as usual.

The leaders all over the world would be changed this year, as for Japan, the leader of Democratic Party would be elected today, then what will happen?

Test driving over


Any outstanding defect in NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz were observed while test driving today, of course the clicking noise from DOJ and DIS was not discerned, so I conclude the procedures applied in the ball joints was to the point and successful.
The first generation Vitz RS would last me as long as more 100,000km, so the life of the automobile must exceed that of myself?

The bicycle was made by Bridgestone, the quality control must be reliable comparing with third party companies. Serviced as lower description.
The rear bench for children was removed, handle post height at lowest position, saddle position much higher and surface parallel to the ground, rear brake wire shortened and handle angular position adequately.

Important maintenance

The reason why I put an emphasis on the maintenance and the adjustment on my automobile is to keep the performances at their best conditions as the factory designers had decided when the models had rolled out to the market at that time.
This concept has been applied from long time ago in my mind not only for my automobile but also for all the machinery,device and equipment.

The bicycle obtained the day before yesterday would be cleaned, adjusted and lubricated, braking wires F/R also firmly set at proper lengths.
The test driving of NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz would be performed today that was repaired on drive shaft DIJ inconvenience yesterday.
The tires must be checked before that at the adequate pressures,2,3kg/cm2, 1,6kg/cm2 promptly, because the atmospheric temperature has changed recently.

NCP10 Vitz repaired

Inner boots of NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz was opened with on board circumstance, surprising me the lubricant inside was like water and just came out thoroughly with the viscoelasticity being almost the same as power steering oil, colored in dirty brown as mentioned in the re-call report of "including moisture".

Supposing a possibility to have been filled in DIJ in Vitz, as the recent way of vehicle designing tendency, all the frictions are  going to be eliminated, for example weak expansion power of piston rings inviting low viscosity lubrication.

Such way of thinking must have been applied also on drive shaft lubrication but with just mistaking too much moisture was included unexpectedly.

The test driving after replacing lubricant into chrome molybdenum grease proved the kicking noise has disappeared on both side. The main reason of the noise were produced mainly by DIJ on both sides.
Now my lovely Vitz became in perfect condition including precisely established wheel alignment and constructive geometry.

It rained cats and dogs in Osaka and Tkaraduka as to be drenched to the skin if I was outside. In case of much humidity after some rain fall Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor required much richer mixture, this is a natural physical phenomena. Now the adjusting of the air volume control screw is the lean best position.

Exhaust emission analysis device would tell me the best angular position of the screw, I must ask about this before the next legal inspection test turns every 2 years, this is not a negligible Japanese Legal rule on earth.

Tomorrow the bicycle would be maintained that had been obtained occasionally now in Vectra's cargo room.

Consideration on lubricant


Before starting the work on disassembling knuckle ball joint of NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz, I must bare in mind that disconnection of ABS sensor wiring is indispensable, if not the circuitry would be opened by cutting or coupler fracture.

Even now I'm at a loss how to do about the trouble?
Grease replacement into harder one, replace parts into old parts that had been obtained few years ago in Netz TOYOTA, of course replacement of grease is indispensable treatment also or order new genuine parts for the best relief?

Anyway the stock of chrome molybdenum grease has ruined because of the drive shaft maintenance of VW 1302 Super Beetle the day before yesterday. This afternoon I would go to a dealer for those materials.

BC7 and NCP10 has good motor performance in spite of laziness on motor oil replacement, the reason is the special additive, Microflon, too smooth operation does not make me feel the necessity for oil changing.

No increase of noise nor vibration is observed after over 5,000km in 12 months interval.
In very near future they must be replaced including new comer Beetle.

CV joints in NCP10 Vitz

Clicking noises are heard on both sides while straight running, though they were done only steering had been activated deeply.
The CV joints would last me a little more longer, but driving in the noisy condition is not always comfortable.
How shall I repair the CV joints on NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz?
How about just replacement of lubrication grease into one more grade harder one, because the inconvenience is caused by water including bad quality oil.
Recalling report by TOYOTA appears in the site of Ministry of Land and Infrastructure.
2 bellows cases of chrome molybdenum grease must be obtained for the CV joints lubrication.

Genuine replacement parts


The shape of acceleration pedal arm side wire tip processing were different from original one in spite of the genuine German made replacement parts had been ordered. Vending one more point on the neck portion may prevent from being applied inconvenient direction leading to the fracture.

1/8 closing of air volume control screw on Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor changed drive feel better than before, now 2 plus 1/2 opened position exactly.
It is the preferential right for mechanical carburetor equipped automobile to be looking for the best points on variable factors.

Terrible smell

Terrible mole smelling forced me to remove all the carpet inside of the cabin of VW 1302 Super Beetle, accumulated mole for 40 years considerably stinks.

I was a servant for my Beetle all day long today, it took me relatively long time to understand the construction of accelerating wire guide tube passing through the cooling fan.

The guide tube made of iron pipe had some crack as if cut by sharp saw, this was formed by continuous wire movement, and the guide tube had been moved backward by mistake.
This misalignment of guide tube must be one of the reason for the wire cut accident few days ago.

Packed lubricating grease was increased in bulk on four continuous velocity joints again and let's see what will happen, occasional strange kicking noise may disappear?
In case of negative result, I will replace the joint parts that is already obtained.

Unnecessarily tightened wiring with tie up band connected with starter motor pulled out the terminal connection and the opened circuitry caused silent starter accident. So tightening does not always bring better results.
Free movement length must be prepared where some dynamic movements exist.

Correlations

The clicking noise in steering linkage of VW 1302 Super Beetle involves me in some anxiety.
As it goes without writing, replacement parts of steering gear box for "Right steering model" are not supplied in all over the world, so the life of the gear box is that of the 1302 or the 1303 except the lack & pinion steering designed later models.

But the tie rod end parts are not replaced since last trial, the parts are ready.
I hope the clicking noise shall disappear not the steering gear box but from tie rod end pillow ball joints.

In addition left hub position would be moved outside for the convenience of wheel alignment procedure adjusting lateral offset, being required of cam adjusting in lower arm and strut upper mount outside to keep the negative camber value, minus 20 minutes.

But remember here that the difficulty to establish the frontal camber setting in frontal axle construction, camber and toe are in correlations, adjusting one means being affected on another value, so camber and toe must be adjusted together at the same time.

In anther words, wheel inclinations must be adjusted vertically(camber) under the requirement of fixed toe value horizontally(toe direction).
This is why the camber adjustment is so difficult as to be obliged the ultimate precise concentration even for the professionals.
Remember here again that the camber value should be exactly the same for the right and the left sides under the actual automobile operation condition.

All the engineer to adjust wheel alignments would come across with the highest wall to be overcome, the physical property for compliance materials, rubbers in axle construction.
The deformability, the viscoelasticity and the hysteresis are are the hateful enemy for the honest and candidate engineers.

It took me almost 10 years "to establish" the method of obtaining repeatable datum and "to measure" the wheel alignments and the constructive geometry in the automobile, to adjust and to establish the alignment according to the datum value shown by the factory.

The engineers trying to do these procedure would come to know how much do the rubber physical properties relentlessly prevents them from obtaining repeatable and precise datum.
It very difficult to eliminate the uncertainties in the procedure.
I have never met with the reliable engineer to do this as to be satisfied.

Replacement parts arrived!



Thank to sophisticated transportation and distribution networks, the cargo of replacement parts ordered yesterday arrived here Osaka today before noon overcoming 1,000km distance from Toyama prefecture.

I'm surprised to know how quickly and how perfectly the periodical replacement parts are supplied on air-cooled Beetle after 40 years later from production.
The reason must be the preferential right for one of the past world wide best sellers automobile?

These replacement parts would make me so busy on coming Thursday as to exhaust my body energy completely on earth!

Ordered parts would come

Disassembled and terminal cleaned fuel gauge in Beetles meter cluster works well, the stylus shows the correct point on the level.

Fuel consumption may be increased after the adjustment to richer idling performance on Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor? Determined I to check it today, 38,374km is the value to have fuel tank fulfilled.

Today "Beetle House" in Toyama pref. would send me replacement parts.
By the way, the back up lump put on yesterday? Some opportunistic loose of circuitry may happen? Where, in the switch module, at 1,800yen? Ordered but not in stock, they replied?

A continuous velocity joint for the rear axle was ordered also because some kicking noise remained occasionally in left outer joint, costing 8,450yen.

Net surfing yesterday guided me to some specific professional field, finding out the terminology TNF-Alpha, Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha and Adipo-cytokine.

This kind of words in specific Biochemical field took me to the past good day as a researcher about 25 years ago.
Nostalgic names of the researchers in our field were found out, they are continuing it still now!

Groval strategy car?

Precise measurement on the title were performed to find out ill values far from factory's ones for NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz.
The set back was minus considerably, this setting must have designed on production line intentionally.

This kind of ill setting would cheat ordinal users because the self steer phenomena makes the automobile go forward by self adjusting frontal axle designing, SAI, caster, scrub, camber and toe setting.

In short the destruction of the stopper bolt had been begun and just I applied additional torque power for tightening then natural physics phenomena happened that's all.
So, I count it as an early failure of the product, 40 years later from the machine production.

Temporarily countermaesure



Temporarily countermeasure was performed by connecting the linkage with tieup bands. This is for about 1 week application before the ordered replacement parts would come to me.

Though primitive and stupid connection with engineering plastic material, under the stress of only pulling action enough to acceleration response is obtained.

As impatience and despair invited trifle error, accelerator wire end stopper bolt on Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor destroyed on the head because of primitive mistake, overtightening.
Of course damaged bolt was thoroughly removed and compensated with new 5mm by 10mm bolt safely, reminding me of famous proverb, "Misfortune never comes alone!".

The criminal of strange smell like geriatric odor indeed was the carpet inside of cabin. Finding out some brown colored powder after removing them, all of them were mold spore indeed.

So, determined I to replace them thoroughly though as relatively expensive they are. It's better to do that if I continue this Super Beetle from now for the time being, for the comfortable driving in this automobile.

The automatic choke module's initial angular position has much to do with the idling mixture setting, so it was a bit adjusted again.

The clicking noise in steering linkage becoming louder and louder, day by day, checking the backlash while parking by shaking steering roughly. Probably tie rod end ball joints on both side must be replaced that were not changed from the begining. Replacement parts are ready.

Now my Super Beetle has minus thrust angled value, so positioning the left frontal hub position outside by cam adjuster and strut upper mount moving outside are the best cocking on erath.

Though complicated procedures as the task will be, I would be sure to be satisfied so much if the constructive geometry and wheel alignment were established firmly.
These are the residual pleasure for me on this Beetle.

Strategy today

Broken accelerator wire brought non-operating of VW 1302 Super Beetle this time, but the critical reason for this sudden accident must be clarified on earth.
It happened relatively soon after carburetor replacement, the length of the adjusting distance changed at carburetor throttle arm connective end.

Judging from the upper phenomena, the L shaped wire end at accelerator pedal must have caused some misalignment and any lateral oblique force applied repeatedly on specific point on the point that is transition section to fuck?

No sticky movement nand catching were observed on the throttle arm functions on Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor.
No slipping resister on wire surface was found, being greased few days ago.

Probably the precise inspection on wire cutting end area and wear of L shape end surface(shinny point) would reveal the fact and the truth, but the residual parts is not found.
Anyway the reason of the critical fracture must be sure to identify the fully mechanical controlled machinery, air-cooled Beetle.

Just a replacement of the wire as periodical replacement parts would leave some anxiety on the important parts, any element of any anxiety must be eliminated for the enjoyment on Beetle from the bottom of my heart.

The bolt size of throttle arm cap was not 5/8 but probably 18 in uncertain memories.
Today I shall move Beetle to my working pit in the mountain Villa.

Gave up today

Checking out few minutes ago in the rain removing accelerating pedal linkage cover revealed the fact that the loosing tension on connecting throttle wire was miserably cut off, not just the falling down of L shaped hook.
Any countermeasure must be worked out, otherwise my Super Beetle cannot go out from the garage at all?

The new wire parts ordering is the best way to solve this problem, but takes time about a week to complete it.
Making loop on the old wire end then connect it with the arm hole of pedal linkage horn?
After sun rising tomorrow, I'll start to repair the chronic disease in the linkage.

Lateral support in rear axle

As an experiment the trials to know how much does the hardness of bushes in lateral supporting arm hinge affect on the steering reaction, using EP82 TOYOTA Starlet with rear 3 linked lateral rod supporting rigid axle.

The method of changing hardness of butyl rubber bushes were tightening and loosening on the hosing side support.
Steering actions on the scenery changed suddenly that exceeded a specific certain hardness, in another words there existed some clicking point on the hardness in the transient curvature.

This point must be influenced by all the 3 dimensional, physical and dynamic movements.
Too soft and deformable setting on these compliance makes the initial steering reaction dull, heavy, muddy and sticky, because the signal to turn from the steering would be consumed by the lateral movement(too much application of lateral compliance) of rear axle construction.

Recent rear axle designs of F/F models have these kind of tendency, muddy steering habit, because the design has the intention to distort the axle itself from the beginning, so designed to displace at all. Far from a cheerful astringency once an UK light weight sports cars had as a natural identity.

In addition to the upper description there exist inevitable broad dead zone in centric steering position.
This zone is often utilized as a way to cheat the ill wheel alignment setting, and sometimes to make the users as steering stability.

Repair Auto & FAX

In order to access to the accelerator linkage in VW 1302 Super Beetle, 5/8 socket wrench must be prepared that in my pit in villa, so I must go to working place by way of mountain roads taking 30 minutes more.

I think the inconvenience on the linkage must have been brought by just the loosing of L shape link connection with the arm horn not by the wire cut nor staking out.
Anyway the phenomena would be appeared after removing the cap fixed with two 5/8 bolts.

Primitive way of communication, sending printing information, FAX is broken in my home, though I seldom use the system, and naturally the argument for replacement occurs?
I replaced all the batteries inside, so they must be picked up before being thrown away.

How about taking a photo and sending the datum as a frozen file in the Web site?
Nowadays FAX? It's like a fossil way to send some data to other, no?

Finally I went to the toy shop "Yodobashi Camera Umeda" for new FAX telephone system with two another handsets at 30,000yen, too expensive for my Xanthippe?

Accident this morning

Just I came across with the accident this morning, the connecting accelerating wire lost it's tension with some clicking noise when I pushed down the pedal for automatic choke activation.

Probably some crimping in the linkage has lost or just a L shape link had been deviated?
The replacement of carburetors last time may be the reason, loosing wire tension for a while?

Though removing the cover with 13mm bolts loosening, relatively quickly the cause was checked, I gave up and postpone it.
Suppose if this inconvenience happened on the way to Miyama yesterday? It's very lucky that happened in my garage!

Consequently I used NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz instead, fully air conditioned, power steering, enough compliance application on arm hinge bushes, offset crank shaft designed smooth motor and with all gear lock up designed while acceleration sophisticated automatic trans-axle?
Far above comfortable compared with air cooled VW Beetle?

Next job on 1302

Tie rod ends on both side must be replaced prior to the wheel adjustment and constructive geometry correction, because the only the parts of tie rod end ball joints were not replaced that were not recommended the necessity to be done.

As the parts are prepared and another ones had been done except ends parts, this time is the best opportunity to be replaced on all the steering linkage.

Frontal camber application on the left side referring right side would the first job for the next time. This adjusting procedure needs the best concentration, because the value of toe fluctuates according to camber adjustment, so the both of them must be established together at the same time.

Frontal camber setting at the same value is the key to the wheel adjustment, because the following procedures would be proceeded relying on the frontal hub standard point.

Much more stability on steering actions would be obtained after the acquirement of the corrected wheel alignment and constructive geometry.

Precise carburetor adjustment

Precise adjustment of A/F ratio control would be performed concentrating on the point only today by actual test driving on VW 1302 Super Beetle today.
This is one of the most interesting step for me because this kind of procedure is not capable for recent computer controlled automobile, the privilege of a old one like my Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor equipped Beetle.

The combustion condition would be observed checking the color on the ceramic part of spark plugs after some running test.
I knew that the idle mixture condition affects on the position setting of automatic choke angular position.

Written in the evening:

Today I've selected some special drive course that I had not tried for long time, to Northern part of Kyoto, Miyama. Quite an empty road of round trip carried my Beetle back earlier than usual. Choosing a different path from an ordinal tour course may be one of the reason.

Just a little effort was required to decide the sweetest point on air volume adjusting screw on Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor equipped on VW 1302 Super Beetle. Twice of trial setting was enough to know the setting point of volume adjusting screw(smaller one).
2 plus 5/8 turn out from the most closed point was the result.
After obtaining the very best point, any jerky reaction on AD motor disappeared resulting comfortable gear changing on the trans-axle.

And the motor stop tendency after a down hill(utilizing engine braking effect), such kind of bad habit disappeared.
Engine noise during cruising itself changed into mild and comfortable one. How come? I did this Beetle as long as 7,000km without serious carburetor adjustment?

Finding out the lateral offset on the wheel alignment, frontal wheel is adjusted too much out side to establish the 20minutes negative camber application, of course the strut upper mount point was so adjusted as to come inside at the same time.

The countermeasure for this unbalanced alignment is to make the left frontal wheel outside position on the same as the frontal right side. Of course the strut upper mount must be moved out side at the same time to keep the original negative camber value. I think this intention better this time on Beetle than adjusting rear total toe vector direction.

This kind of discrepancy on lateral offset may take time to be corrected firmly, remembering the former automobile EP82 TOYOTA Starlet with rear axle fixed 3 linked trailing arm with lateral arm constructive design, finally finding out the critical problem, being soldered rear hub case construction with firm and solid fixation but irregular rear negative cambers.

Manual adjustment

Photoshop 5,5 does not accept Microsoft MS Gothic and MS mincho JIS2004, newly installed by way of Web font support (KB927489) is the reason, so reported in the site.
As a countermeasure I chose different font Impact Regular bold type, then PS accepted as some letter insertion in the photograph.

In case of an incomprehensible problem, Web site is very helpful on earth.
Because the fundamental problem based on the software installed by way of downloading cannot be defined by ordinal people who is not specialized in the specified field.

The change of idle mixture to richer direction on VW 1302 Super Beetle causes eye-opening difference on transient characteristics, very interesting for me, comparing with 4 cylinder WEBER twin carburetor setting, the transient is relatively understandable, because the mixture control is done by a single adjusting screw on Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor.

The burned color of plus terminal ceramic part is the best sign to know the combustion condition.

Remembering some past scenery at CHELM Ibaragi, as the mechanical engineer said the idle mixture was not adequate with rough rotation.
Comparing the past the condition at idle speed is far improved, more precise adjustment would be continued.

The amount of idling fuel supply affects on all the higher rotations and transient on the way. Stumbling and hesitating phenomena almost disappeared.

Common sense and it goes without writing as it is, recirculating lubricant plays an important part of cooling, some foggy fuel came from intake valve cools the piston head while the operation also.

So the lack of enough fuel supply causes critical piston top melting and making hole in the worst. Recent researches proved that the elimination of heat spot in the cylinder head construction is the key to success of a new designing.

Reverse Switch

In spite of re-connecting trans-axle back up lights terminal to plus circuitry on ignition coil after checking engine room fuse capsule, they don't put on, how come?
The terminals on reverse switch may be opened or the switch itself fracture?
New parts costs 1,800yen, so the parts replacement may be one of the choice.
The maintenance on the reverse switch circuitry will be performed on coming Thursday.

Burned

Forgetting the daily obligation, the heated muffler attacked me on left inner arm! This accident happened when I attempted to the right side drive shaft boots for the lubricant application into the CV joints, probably they were not serviced for long time, from the beginning 40 years ago, no maintenance was performed?

Immediately after arriving at working pit I tried to check drive shaft without wearing usual long sleeve working clothes. Instantaneous contact with heated muffler was enough to burn my inner arm like this. This is the proof that,"Ego called an amazing accident.".

The performance of VW AD motor has considerably improved by air volume adjusting screw on Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor. Much more precise adjustment would be tried from now, being looking forward to it.


A/F Mixture

The personal computer in my working place did not start up well after five days interval, how come?
What makes you feel unsatisfied, the same as my Xanthippe? 

VW1302 Super Beetle with Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor changes it's performance according to the mixture control dramatically.

Immediately after the first idling with the choke module being activated phase, it runs so smooth with some comfort, in the richer mixture condition. Of course feel I vivacious accelerator reaction, then after warming up period, it becomes dull and poor powered one?

These signs are actually thin mixture?
It's a great fun for me to seek the best mixture point on air volume control screw(smaller one).

As I mentioned yesterday, the color of ceramic part of spark plug will be a good sign to no A/F mixture ratio.

Following the emission control exhaust gas regulation, 4,5% CO, 1200PPM HC, the setting point must be re-adjusted after my own setting.

Remembering old story on WEBER 40 DCOM in PEUGEOT Talbot 205 Rallye, the points(Twin Carburetor), there were not big difference between the best performance points and those of sophisticated scaling device's answer.

So, the sweetest setting point may be the same as that decided by exhaust gas checker device?
Now I will start a fight the machine? Which answer would be correct?

The last day today

Bon holidays over today with few results as usual. Residual tasks must be digested today, a pitching stopper replacement, trans-axle position sensor overhaul and room cleaning on XH200 Opel B-Vectra, deserted for long time garden cleaning.
Mental preparation must be done after the holidays.
Description later:

The ceramic part of spark plug was white with no color, black nor brown, this phenomena shows too lean mixture. So air volume adjusting screw was adjusted again to richer direction with screwing-in 1/8 rotation.

All the motor reaction and performance were improved so much reminding me of dear memory with WEBER 40 DCOM carburetor equipped PEUGET Talbot 205 Rallye.
The idling adjust was the only key to obtain good performance and the exactly the same thing is said on Solex 34PICT3 carburetor equipped VW 1302 Super Beetle, air volume adjust screw position.

Filing on contact points surface in voltage regulator could recover the adequate performance on fuel gauge stylus appropriate position.

Thanks to the rear toe direction(thrust angle) and total toe value, my Beetle goes straight like an arrow at any speed, of course no adjusting steering centric position.
I can afford to wear seat belt using both hands while running.

KAYABA scissors jack was repaired by the replacement of piston cylinder sealing material.
Only the application of butyl rubber squared shaped ring is not enough, deformable rubber is easily comes out from the clearance and the obvious pressure leak happens.
So the factory designed to insert some hard deformable engineering plastic material. Over 10 years use destroyed this plastic material ring.

The KAYABA factory does not supply the tiny plastic ring part only, they oblige users to return to the company for full overhaul, expensive at all.
Almost of the jack with this critical problem must be thrown away as it was broken with pressure oil leakage.

But for this special plastic ring for preventing deformation of rubber material sealing O ring, 1 month would be the life if used without countermeasure method.
The same plastic O ring is set on the bigger operative cylinder.
I happened to come across very suitable plastic O ring in my junk box.
The life of rubber sealing material would be extended far longer than before without this plastic ring.

Worked hard today

Accelerator pedal returning spring was repaired yesterday, this 4 turning coil spring has relatively long legs on both side and lower part was broken and became shorter till no action was played.

So my deeper consideration brought me to the countermeasure that one circle turning back and straighten the part would regain a longer leg. The tact surely paid off on earth, successfully reassembled, this spring plays an important part of stopper not to slip off the pedal hinge shaft.

Today's recipe were disassembling the voltage regulator on fuel gauge and soldering all the terminal through rivet holding portions. Re-gained original current supply, OK. Torn thick black paper cover in frontal trunk was repaired with cloth tape and some glue.

Thrust angle was checked and re-adjusted into zero, minus 3 minutes was corrected by sim insertions right rear trailing arm both inside and outside, 0,9mm thickness on both side.

The adjustment was performed as to reduce the total toe value, resulting the lighter steering action on turning, became more natural and light when deeper angle was applied.

Steering resisting pressure became the same on right and left turning.
Of course the wondering tendency disappeared, and the stiffness in centric steering position while straight running far increased and became much more stable.

Idling mixture was changed into richer direction, about 90 degree on air volume adjusting screw. The motor reaction became acceptable, gentle and no jerky hunting.



Old technology same as now

Based on my own experience, 4 joint boots parts have been obtained few months ago, deeper inspection yesterday proved that the physical property of rubber boots was not lost even 40 years later after production.

Continuous Velocity Joint constructive design had been established that time already with adequate production quality.
Hub bearing in front had been checked safe, but rear one are not though replacement parts had been obtained.

Today I'll perform the maintenance on XH200 Opel B-Vecra, replacement of pitching stopper, timing belt tensioner wheel, tensioner itself and trans-axle position sensor disassembling.

NHK this morning televised Battle of Okinawa in WW2, not a few US Army soldiers were fell into mental illness at that time, mental trauma were the reasons, also even now in Afghanistan the same phenomena happens also.

Human-being may not have enough capability to endure on excessive stimulation like that and the stable mental condition may be relatively easily destroyed by unexpected violence?

Kicking noise from drive shaft

Some strange noise from drive shaft joint, both DOJ & DIG, obliged me to apply any countermeasure on VW 1302 Super Beetle. To tell the truth the strange noise was discerned at hill climb corner when relatively heavy duty was burdened on the drive train.

The correct way to restore the drive shaft joint is removing from the axle, wash away old grease and re-assemble, but I did shoddy construction, just applying new grease from the gap between drive shaft and boots inner portion sneakingly.

Inspection proved that no viscosity was felt by lateral rocking, once damaged joint may cause the same problem soon after a while, as an experiment the upper countermeasure was attempt.

Like a different vehicle, the movement of rear axle moves very light just slipping resistor was removed and strange kicking noise disappeared, it was successful, lucky!

Every joint drunk through more than 25cc of Chrome Molybdenum grease, obtaining grease viscosity when the drive shafts were laterally migrated, OK!





Emotional control

I must make my son understood my opinion.
You need analysis not of the new automobile you are going to buy but of yourself, your emotional condition.
Why do you eager for the road going automobile that has high specification, you must peep into some inside of your mind deeper part, isn't it just you want to meet the self-betrayal.

Sometimes it very difficult to come into his heart inside because I might hurt him to intrude his weak point where his defense preparation is not enough.
The purpose is not defeat his way of thinking but to assist him internally enough referring the way that a passed 20 years ago.

Also I have no intention to guide him to some specific direction, but I feel that he is making use of me as a mimic with reference for his own direction.
I'm going to give all what have, because he can go further and higher in future than what I'm now today.

Anyway he must study and understand how to analyze himself and decisions must be done after the deepest considerations.
Certainly I'm looking forward to his fine future.

34PICT3 Carburetor




Unburdened and disassembled Solex 34PICT3 carburetor from VW 1302 Super Beetle was re-assembled as it was after some parts cleaning procedure.

As mentioned yesterday the air-leakage at throttle shaft on right and left side were sealed with silicon coking material in addition to the central portion that was originally sealed with some epoxy grew material also.

And another parts of the carburettor were also repaired promptly, accelerator pump module and fuel cut solenoid also.
Throttle position screw is easier to be adjusted it's originally fixed position when the body is separated.

This originally equipped genuine carburetor 34PICT3 would be kept as a emergency supply parts.
As for replaced Bocar 34PICT3 works so well as to obtain ultimate performance of AD 1600cc Flat4 motor.

This carburetor was obtained in YaHoo Auction at 3,300yen as a junk but actually with no missing of parts nor distorted portion, just like a new one, remembering that periodical replacement parts overhaul kit priced at 4400 yen instead?





Interesting recipe today

For the better idling stability Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor in VW 1302 Super Beetle will be re-adjusted in combination with the requirements, point gap and ignition timing, 0,40mm at BTDC 7,5 degree.

Ignition plugs will be checked also to know the validity of A/F mixture ratio that has been neglected for long time.

1 or 2 adjusting sim in AC generator drive pulley must be moved outside for more tightening of fun drive belt tension. Trifle but indispensable maintenance would be performed today.

XH200 Opel V-Vectra is at servicing pit, so trans-mission position sensor switch would be checked, upper pitching stopper part would be replace and so on.

As for BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model, no other necessity of maintenance is to be found except motor oil replacement that has been used more than 18 month unusually, the reason is Microflon application 6 months ago.

No increase of threatening mechanical vibration is observed unusually and surprisingly the smoking phenomena experienced at least once a month disappeared, no smoking is observed since a half a year ago that is caused by oil peeing while parking to cylinder from valve stem guide inner surface and by hardened and specific worn valve stem seal probably 1 or two.

Air conditioner compressor makes a strange noise when used, this may be caused by lack of lubrication lost in combination with gas leakage, added several times cooling gas only.

Torsion beam axle suspension

Rear suspension arm sheet is the name of the special parts provided by TRD(Toyota Racing Division) for NCP10 Vitz. They are some racing parts for controlling the lateral movement of rear torsion beam arm suspension, as TOYOTA calls the inevitable physical phenomena with a very beautiful name "Toe Correct System" ?

This unacceptable strange movement of rear axle causes sticky steering action that's unendurable. Initial steering movement is completely consumed by the unnecessary lateral movement of rear suspension, in other word, broad dead zone is produced by the rear axle movement, that's called as toe control system?

So TRD is providing the countermeasure for this strange phenomena, actually this is very inconvenient if NCP10 Vitz is used at some racing speed. Uncontrollable because of strange reaction that unexpectedly guides the car undesired direction with tricky action.
In additional to the other words, the parts is designed to eliminate so to speak "Free movement area" , for racing use requiring relatively precise movement of rear axle.

Depending on my own experience strange "Toe Correct System" habit still remains after wearing those special parts, 10mm thickness butyl rubber parts with probably #70 ISO hardness. Thrust bearing application there is the better way to prevent the lateral movement effectively.

Basically those upper problem have been clear after the change of design concept of lower suspension arms no matter how if they are for front or for rear, by changing arm stress lever ratios.
This concept is based on the deformable bushes application on the hinge movement portions with the concept to distort and to deform actively to consume physical stress from the ground.

Naturally the geometry of axle distorted causing the change of wheel alignment. Most of the driver would feel some unnatural sticky steering reaction at the beginning, but most of them would get accustomed to the steering feel as a specific habit of the model NCP10 Veitz.

On the other hand beam axle designing of rear suspension has obtained some enough compliance to make the driver feel like in the more upper class automobile, just it's illusion.

Anyway most of B and C segment F/F automobiles has torsion beam rear axle design, I do not always agree this tendency, because I miss steering astringency so much.

Mechanical designing

Any efforts will be in vain if there are air-in-leakage at throttle shaft, so described in the famous Web site on air cooled VW Beetle from Australia.
Also the wear that parts for long time use is critical for the carburetor, Solex 34PICT3.
Remembering Weber 40 DCOM in Peugeot Talbot 205 Rallye, throttle shaft was supported on both sides by deep grooved radial ball bearing and the air leakage was considered well to be eliminated by applying specially designed fancier parts including coil spring.
So any manufacturers are struggled on these portion, fulfilling the requirements, moving under well sealed condition.

Incredibly impossible?

"A public road going racing car?"

A young driver like my son has some specific direction to raise ordinal passenger cars as sports car with harder suspensions, a stronger motor and heavier duty tires and brakes.
How about a fundamental tuning up method, make it's weight lighter?

Removing out unnecessary decorations would be the best way to tune up the automobile, including driver's body weight.
Before writing like this, most of the driver would soon come to know that driving ordinal sporty type public road going automobile with license plates is not so interesting and joyful if it is driven on the closed circuit because of heavier weight, poor braking system, and unstable suspension and axle construction with weak strength including tires.

To run on a public road at reasonable speed range requires some adequate setting and that is completely different from that for circuit running. No confusing nor mixing up are not allowed in the public use.
So if the driver want to drive an automobile at some violent speed, it must be performed with the adequate car prepared for racing use at the adequate place, closed circuit without any police, under the special racing licensed rules.

As a conclusion I wanna tell my son below:
You may keep 2 automobiles, one is a carrier truck to bring the circuit running racing car to the circuit and this is mainly used including commuting purposes and the latter is a target, tuned racing car(without plate license).

So mixed up strange decorated public road going automobile, Honda Civic Euro TypeR should be obtained by you also because of additional many reasons.

Idling drifts

Automatic choke module angular position was re-adjusted just a bit precisely this morning as to be able to start motor with one action and continue warming up period of time with increased rotation sufficiently.

I found out some strange phenomena that the nose up parking makes the idle speed increase about 500rpm, how come?
Why the inclination with nose up figure increases the motor rotation?

The change of fuel pressure makes it?
The fuel tank would be rise up at higher position if parked with nose up figure. But remember here that the 34PICT3 carburetor had been so designed as not to be influenced by vehicles inclination, float chamber system. Then what makes the idle speed changes by the parking ground inclination?

Deeper inspections and consideration must be done to obtain clear answer for the strange phenomena.
Bon holidays are best opportunity for the upper purpose, it's convenient for me.
Anyway I'll do by myself, to myself and for myself, because no other external factor would not satisfy myself.

Of course the way to know the truth and the fact is not always so easy as to be paved so smooth for the frontier, I must go on the decided way and must keep the original direction, otherwise I would loose my own identity in future.

Airleakage


Concerning airinleakage on the locked nut of throttle arm tightened on the throttle butterfly center shaft, all the time I'm obliged to think over about the airinleakage on Solex 34PICT3 disassembled last Sunday.

I found out some bubble come out through threaded grove of lock nut when I had applied some pressure from the butterfly throttle to the center shaft. The phenomena some bubble formation means airoutleakage, at the same time airinleakage when it is functioned on the AD motor?
Though the leakage from the adjacent parts center shaft and carburetor case is reported, that from the groove of locking nut were not experienced in the Web sites.

As a countermeasure, coking material application is imagined, silicon sealing material considering the hottest atmospheric using, the temperature in the engine room must exceed 120 degree Celsius.
Probably the volume control and bypass screw position would be completely changed after the modification preventing airinleakage.
I'm looking forward to to know what will happen in the experiment!

Young energy

Grandsons and their mother are staying at our home, they scatter strong and active energy here and there, a remarkable changes in our environment are apparent so much.

Living in the Northern part of Tokyo as they are, we suggest some opinion to live in Osaka for the time being, because of the radioactive contamination by Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident.
The influence of contamination may be increased because of age, the younger the worse?
Tomorrow they would go back to Nagoya for their mother's home.

Bon holiday period would start soon.
I will feel happy to be alone for the time, someone makes a trip to Kyushu for about one week.
I may do anything I want without any interruptions.

FIAT500 for Japan


New FIAT 500 right steering model may have critical difficulty to sell in Japan. Brake system is one of the most important mechanism for automobile and it will not used without using brake system, indispensable function at all.
Because of the lack of the space in the 500 engine room the vacuum master could not be brought to the right side and the designer was obliged to construct the appendant linkage with long way function producing inevitable distortion of the rods.
So the driver sitting on the right side can drive with steering and accelerating pedal, but not brake pedal.
The driver is obliged to concentrate to the brake pedal unnecessarily because of strange and rapid reaction, anyway unnatural reaction.

My son is fascinated by Honda Civic Euro TypeR recently. Careful checking on the model revealed that the platform of the model was utilized that of Fit and decorated in various way to finish as a expensive Civic Type R at 3000,000 yen.
Is the model is worth paying the money so much on Fit with 2,000cc motor?
Actually the model had been developed to enhance the willingness to buy the product.
Also it reminiscent of hope with the added value at 300 million yen, that is nothing but the model Fit?
However hard the production may be decorated in various ways, motor 2,000cc and shinny emblems, do we buy B segment smaller and cheaper model Fit at 3,000,000yen?

BMI,weight and height

Since yesterday I carried some baggage to the automobile trunk, I feel sharp pain on my back gradually becoming worse.
This kind of dysfunction must be caused by too much body weight, BMI number now is 28, ideal is 22 and 25 at the most.

I shall loose my weight in a month till 25, just by refraining from eating too much that enough according to my experience last year.
After loosing weight I would be able to keep a distance from all the diseases for geriatric.

Visiting graves

Though my body condition is not so fine today, we must visit to several graves in Kyoto and Osaka, starting early in the morning and coming back before noon.

The real estate near Hankyu rail way station yesterday was observed yesterday, it was good but expensive considering the land price situation nowadays.
Another populated area was also checked, lower priced but the unacceptable building was situated on the next door, a funeral hall, another next door was a post office?

About Solex 34PICT3 carburetor, the parts stock was negative and waiting for next cargo arrival in FLAT4 Tokyo, so DIY is considered to make the Power Jet part by some plastic material with the small nozzle hole, 0,475mm. The imagination shows it possible to apply some injection stylus on the precise nozzle parts.
Remembering that the stumbling and hesitating bad habit had been caused by the closing the nozzle hole by some chemical sludge.

Replaced Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor is now working so well as to draw out the performance of VW 1302 Super Beetle 1600cc AD motor produced 40 years ago.
Forgetting my geriatric age, I used my left leg too much especial on the heel resulting some dull pain in the deeper joints with difficulty in walking, but it'll be recovered soon.

Yesterday I drove NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz produced 10 years ago with 50,000km use, I was so surprised to know that how much evolved the automobile for these 30 years interval though the original design and the basic concept were not changed.
Just driving was very easy and comfortable like a half sleeping in Vitz.
The compliance setting on axle construction was almost perfect and motor performance was miracle in addition to the automatic air conditioning system.
But that's all, far from impressive like air cooled Beetle.

New FIAT 500 was test driven by my son this afternoon, good but unacceptable because of strange reaction of brake pedal. Modification of steering wheel position made originally designed performance loose in bad way, the L shape linkage to activate vacuum master back situated in left side(only this part was not moved and left as the original position) consumes the delicate brake pedal feel on earth.
The reason for strange brake pedal reaction is mainly caused by the unnatural linkage applied on only for right steering setting models only for Japan, Australia and United Kingdom.
This phenomena had been observed at the time of Meganue 5 years ago. The contract was canceled for the same reason at that time in Minou Nissan of European import cars division.

Carburetor adjustment

The vacuum nipple to be connected with retarding diaphragm actuator is now closed, because double diaphragm actuator doesn't appear in the market and the retarding concept had been quitted soon, only for 1 to 2 years interval production of air cooled VW.

But, this closed nipple with often closed hose is so useful to adjust the 34PICT3 carburetor, because the air inlet from this nipple while idling shows the condition so apparently as to know the moment A/F mixture, rich or lean.

Gradual inlet from the nipple would gain or loose rpm, increasing the idle speed means too rich and decreasing does too lean. In short the inlet of air from this nipple can increase only the air volume without any screws rotation adjustment.
This useful method is not reported by anyone in the Web site?

The experience on WEBER 40 DCOM side draft carburetor for over 10 years equipped in PEUGEOT Talbot 205 Rallye, passing the Legal inspection by myself in the government line made me possible to know the mixture ratio and a motor condition.

According to my career, most of carburetor setting scenery the mixture is too rich and the fact caused ill-understandable strange phenomena giving up the precise adjustment for most of the engineers.

The sweetest point exists very narrow and small area on the adjustment screw, so the key to success is to know the condition now is rich or lean exactly! Positioning very near to lean points.

In addition the ill-mixture adjustment affects not a little on the transition to middle speed sometimes even to high speed because of moistened spark plugs.
Anyway the adjustment of idle speed and obtaining stability in combination with transient characteristics to middle and hi speed was in my capability.

Performance changed

I feel some change of air-fuel mixture in 34PICT3 carburetor this morning, because the carburetor assembly was replaced into Mexican Bocar from original German Solex. Acceleration became vigorous and my VW 1302 Super Beetle runs about so quickly like a different automobile compared with the past moment of carburetor pre-replacement.

The pressure leak was found on the portion of the arm holding nut inner surface, finding out while cleaning air gun nozzle was applied in the throttle valve center shaft. It means the air leak can be caused when the valve was closed and the reason why the bypass screw had been tightened to the closest point.
In order to prevent this kind of invisible error, much more precise checking is necessary, silicon coking material would be applied to seal there.

Automatic choke module's angular position is going to be set adequately, several trials are necessary.
Warming up time interval and the mixture control are up to the position.

Overhaul determined


Any making detour are not allowed if I would continue fully mechanical controlled old VW 1302 Super Beetle.
I cannot avoid the problem happened on the mechanical carburetor, Solex 34PICT3. No way to pretend that I do not know about it in spite of self clear recognition on the carburetor problem.
Replacing the important parts to solve the problem, acceleration hesitation and stumbling already, for the next, I must proceed to the carburetor however much I may run away about from the problem, the time come just in front of me.

Consequently I must do that, full over haul of a prepared carburetor, Bocar(Mexican) 34PICT3 would be disassembled and replaced on my Beetle today.
I'm making effort to know what part the check ball exist and how many are there?
The reports about the carburetor later:

Successfully the carburetor on VW 1302 Super Beetle was replaced, obtaining completely different responses, eye-opening result was at hand.
Bocar Mexican carburetor prepared was from the YaHoo auction as a junk but like new one without any failures, the pressure leak on throttle butterfly center shaft was not observed.
Carburetor adjusting was performed by actual running test driving 200km today to Northern Kyoto along Route 9.

Acceleration transition was far improved and the rotation from low speed to moderate one was so smooth as to satisfy myself on the 1600cc VW Air-cooled AD type motor.
The reaction and response were linear and apparent according to the adjustment screw's rotations.
Anyway my Super Beetle transformed into completely different automobile from a dull and slow turtle. Now quick and light action it has like a young fish released into clean, clear and fresh water.

After disassembling original Solex 34PICT3 carburetor, I found out a critical error on the power jet, that was completely closed with some hard material. This is the main reason of strange acceleration phenomena, hesitating and stumbling.
Periodical replacement overhaul kit is sold at Flat4 in Tokyo at 4,200 yen.
Do I do that or just replace the power jet with 0,60mm diameter hole?

How to set up Solex 34PICT3 carburetor

I just studied and bare in my mind followings:

The motor must be warm up enough conditioned and choke must be fully opened.

Throttle position screw must be set so precisely as to attain the point to 1/4 turn screwed in and the screw would not appear later adjustment, firmly fixed untouched later, never!
Because the idle speed would be adjusted only by bypass screw, but for this screw no way to adjust the idle speed 800-850 rpm.

While adjusting air volume control screw with closing in, the sweetest point must be within 1/2 turn(mostly out) gaining idle speed.

The rate of initial turning out of both bypass screw and air volume control screw are 2 plus 1/2 turn from the closed positions.

The air volume control screw would not be turned exceeding 1/2 turn, so adjusted position exists between 2-3 turns out position.

Always try to keep the idle speed at 800-850 rpm by adjusting only bypass screw.

Finally volume control screw must be closes in until rotation looses 25 rpm(slightly leaner).

Transition in acceleration

The time is come to study and to understand the fundamental function of Solex 34PICT3 carburetor on VW AD motor in 1302 Beetle model, because some unnatural rotation transition is apparent when acceleration at middle speed.

Deeper inspection would recover this inconvenience, disassembling thoroughly, full understanding on the mechanism and it's functions and precise adjustment on acceleration pump and it's transition, of course the combination with the ignition timing and mechanical centrifugal & vacuum advances are in more importance.

The adjustments of transitions on accelerating seen low to middle and middle to high are very difficult and require professional keen skill, experiences reinforced by scientific technology and background.

Bocar 34PICT3(same as Solex but Mexico made) is already obtained for my own experiments on upper described matters.

Imagine I the accelerating fuel pump adjustment would be the most effective for stumbling and hesitating phenomena, because the centrifugal and vacuum advance systems are already adjusted after replacing from 009 to original German made distributor with vacuum advance actuator.

Distributor


Indispensable replacement parts, the original distributor assembly was disassembled and serviced well to keep it in VW Beetle as a emergency compensating parts.
The contact point surfaces were flattened with diamond fine grain flat file.

The moving parts for ignition timing advance were adhered and partially destroyed, vanish and sticky material inside were cleaned in a organic solvent tray and after drying moving parts were lubricated in combination with Microflon, micro grain Teflon powder, for good performance in the point arm hinge micro movement portion.

Centrifugal mechanical ignition timing advancing system and replaced vacuum solenoid control valve both attained smooth movement after maintenance.
The mechanical system requires periodical maintenance to re-gain ultimate performance.

Here we find a fundamental difference in Air-cooled VW Beetle from nowadays automobile.
This is why I chose Beetle as a partner of automobile life from now.

Servicing all day long




PC does not start up this morning, how come?
I forgot to write down about the critical error on Beetle's driver side seat, the right side lumber support spring welding was broken. So, the driver was forced to sit with hip right side twisting, this is why I felt some fatigue only on the right side.

As a compensation, 3mm iron bolt and nut were applied on the metal spring flame work with making hole, it went well after mending without descriptions.
Replacing seat cover and seat pad carried out remarkable change of driving feel like a different automobile is driven.

Cooling fan drive belt was replaced yesterday on VW 1302 Super Beetle at last, originally Bando was equipped but this time is Continental one.

Increased hip and back support by replacing parts brought a completely stable driving driver's position, fantastic!

Working in the hottest weather condition consumes body energy unusually.
