I did it!

I made efforts yesterday on BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model in spite of cold and chilly weather condition.
Before checking wheel alignments and constructive geometries set back and swung rear end were checked finding out no effective differences.




Introduction:
There are two habits on automobiles, right side or left side tendency habit.
Then such kind of automobile may exist that runs straight with stability.
For long time I've been looking forward to know the possibility to adjust general cars in such a condition?
I had been trying to adjust may automobiles to establish the constructive geometries and wheel alignment asking to the factories, even to the instructor's in Nagoya city who was Hunter company's one.
No one could satisfy my only desire just to run straight!
The time was about 10 years ago that I had made up my mind to do that by myself, for myself and with the DIY instrument of myself.
I wanna report here about my constructive geometry and wheel alignment procedures because considerably favorable results were obtained.

Purpose of this experiment:
To know the possibility to adjust the automobile to go straight, in another words the possibility to eliminate the habit of lateral oblique running.
To know how accurately the automobile can be measured and adjusted, what'll be the limitation?
What element in three dimensions is affective on the steering habit? What affects most and how much on the habit?
Especially the toe effect caused by camber thrust?
Also the transient changes of toe effect due to the change of the rate of the thrust in the different speed ranges.
The possibility to measure the three dimensional inclinations, to adjust adequately, to fix and to tighten at one gravity circumstances. To do these procedures without errors, very special arrangements and know hows must be required.

Method of experiments:
Two devices were created, one is vertical incline scaler with 1719,750mm radius pendulum combined with hub adapter, another is horizontal inclination scaler with LASER pointer on level gauge in combination with hub adapter promptly.
The reason of radius length is to read 2minutes angle value as 1mm length on the scale.
Level gauge is of course calibrated on the two level dimensions and LASER beam direction was also precisely calibrated.
Angle values and distance values were tried 5 times and highest and lowest datum were eliminated and the average of residual 3 datum were adopted.

Results:
Front;
Camber R minus 37,1min., L minus 37,2min.
Total toe 0,95mm in (tire)
Rear;
Camber R minus 45,4min., L minus 45,7min.
Total toe 2,2mm in (tire)
Thrust angle plus 16,20sec.
(With equivalent weight on the driver's seat)

Consideration:
How are thing going there, but somehow a car with continuously troubles, let it go, but somehow I do not like. Now I have a latter one as NCP10 Vitz. Consideration about this emotional problem on Vitz ends up to some physical condition, pointless sense of insecurity. Wheel alignments and constructive geometries would be checked again after putting the equivalent weight on driver's seat as performed on BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model yesterday.
Same experiments are going to performed one by one, SXE-10 TOYOTA Altezza, EP82 TOYOTA Starlet and XH200W OPEL B-Vectra. Especially Altezza would obtain good results.
The affair yesterday, establishing the wheel alignments and constructive geometries on BC7 Legacy, was an amazing feat! Under the condition with burdening equivalent weight on driver's seat position.
The successful satisfactory leads to self confidence in the wheel alignment technology.
I feel like that I have arrived at a dawn point at the end of a long dark、over 10 years interval.

Conclusion:
Self stability while straight running far increased and steering adjusting actions remarkably decreased.
Stays on the same running line after eye points movement.
Putting the equivalent weight on the drivers seat is an indispensable requirement if the reproduction of actual driving condition is desired.
Try not to loose accuracies in every steps to obtain reproducible datum.

Precisely today

Before thrust angle checking I must perform the setback and swung rear end by measuring wheel base at any rate, because the burdening on the driver's seat must have invited the height reduction.
So the application of caster angle must make some posterior hub movement naturally, provably left side wheel must be shortened.

Becomes better

Miss wiring are found in head light circuitry on VW 1302 Super Beetle this evening. High beam is dark and high beam information lamp in meter craster puts on when low beam is ON, how come?
Probably hi-beam and low-beam connectors are set replaced in the coupler.

Rear cambers were checked and corrected at the decided value 40 minutes negative camber, left side showed 34 minutes lacking 6 min comparing with that of right side on BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model.
After correcting rear camber inclination, to be the same value at 40 min, steering reaction became confortable enough to satisfy myself.
High performance tire like Bridgestone POTENZA RE-01 reveals clearly the ill-wheel alignment and constructive geometries, so enough know how and experiences are required to demonstrate the tire's capability and potential.
Thrust angle would be checked and corrected tomorrow.

Frontal camber values were evenly aligned on BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model the day before yesterday, so following step is setback, wheel bases, rear cambers and total rear toe value including thrust angle elimination, hard tasks are waiting this afternoon in the coldest weather. Long lasting from new left side tendency habit may be eliminated this time.



It became clear that the removal of fuel tank on VW 1302 Super Beetle is necessary to access to the steering joint rubber disk, universal joint boots and ball recirculating gear box for maintenances. These steps may be postponed because of BC7's priority.
Any way microscopic examinations must be performed on fuel lines and steering constructions becasue of establishing reliable safety.

Hard muscle works

Though frontal cambers of BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model were evened up at the value of 37 minutes negative inclination, left hau position was moved toward externally leading to producing plus thrust angle resulting left side habit residual.
Next step is the measurements of rear cambers and adjusting at minus 45 minutes value as near as possible. After establishing the rear cambers, total toe and thrust angle should be precisely measured and adjusted so firmly under the condition of driver's seat burdening.
As left side habit remained a little, the thrust angle must be within 3 minutes and direction should be plus, so I anticipate.
Uppers are the tasks for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, in coldest weather condition?


In order to attain the accuracy on the adjustments and measurements of constructive geometry and wheel alignment, reproduction of machine operation conditions are the overriding matter putting anything aside.
Telling the truth, I have been ignoring the importance of the reproduction of actual driving condition because of selfish convenience, but some nose light automobile WV 1302 Super Beetle pried and awakened my half-closed eyelid on the most important point.
The measurements and adjustments on BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model with drivers weigh on the seat position revealed the error being not overlooked.
So as a conclusion, any measurements and any adjustments on a empty automobile is no meaning, because the datum have similarities but differ as to produce strange habits.
7 automobiles in my name must be checked again and adjusted with drivers weight burdening on the seat.
Different driving feel must be waiting for the conceited person on earth.

Errors while maesurements


In order to establish the accuracy of axle constructive geometry and wheel alignment, we must try to make them as smaller as possible, tolerance, deviation, measurment error and variance.
Recently I've found out a negligible uncertainty on measurements, that was the displacement of hub positions while measurements caused by the pysical phenomena of tire spot deformations.
The distance between hub center and ground becomes shorter as the time being while precise measurements leading to more datum variance. 
This phenomena is caused by the movements of supporting positions toward outside leading to more negative cambers application in relation with lever ratios on axle arms.
I didn't imagine the cause of chronic datum variability for long time and I've been suffered so much from this artifacts.
After taking measures for this by upgrade the tire pressure till the limit 3kg/square centimeter, the obtained datum reproducibility were far improved dramatically.

The measurement of the frontal cambers on BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model proved negligible error on left side. The camber inclination on frontal right wheel was 37 min angle value, on the other hand left side was only 5 min under the condition of driver' s body weight was burdened on the position as shown in the photo. After the adjusting on left side camber value at 37 min same as the left value, the character of steering actions changed into more honesty one. As we take it a common sens the adjustment of frontal camber invites the camber value changing, so the measurements must be performed vertically and horizontally together at the same time. This procedure requires some experiences and skills to be carried out without errors.
After setting up the frontal axle firmly, test running found out that the left side tendency habit has been still remained.
I know why so, the additional application of negative camber must have moved the left hub position outside leading to the plus thrust angle reproduction at the same time.
This is the reason why left side tendency still remains even after the increase of frontal left negative values.

Auto works tomorrow

Steering action was checked and known the habitual tendency of straight running on VW 1302 Super Beetle on lust Sunday after axle geometry and wheel alignments adjustments had been performed.
The tasks put off because of selfish flight habit were left undone, steering joint rubber disk checking, universal joint boots replacements and changing steering gear box oil, probably 40 years old oil must be packed. They are the tasks to be done under the special condition, fuel tank should be empty because of it's removal. Now is the time, why don't I do that?
Fortune teller comes to me tomorrow 2 o'clock, so I must come back before the decided time. Early bird tomorrow would I be!



About 20 years old BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model, unexplainable steering action is discerned. Adequate weight as same as driver's body one should be put on the seat when checked next time, different result must be obtained, especially on the value of thrust angle,it's interesting.

Residuals




Fuel tank removing and check out the steering rubber disk joint and universal joint boots, these tasks are not finished yet on VW 1302 Super Beetle. Now it's convenient to do those, because the tank is empty, so do that if it's not an interesting jobs. On coming Thursday I'll do that. After finishing above trifle matters, legal inspection step is waiting for obtaining license plates in this coldest season.
By the way, legal inspection in this coldest winter season remind me of memorious automobile being kept at my hand over 10 years, yes Talbot PEUGEOT 205 Rallye. The homologation below 1300cc category WRC Championship private entry was intended by PEUGEOT company, with no confort equipment except heater system and all transparent glass areas, even glove box cover was eliminated for rallye computer's space. Only one belt was equipped on the clunk pooley only for an alternator driving. Mechanical fuel control was performed by twin WEBER 40 DCOM side draft carburetors in the Talbot factory.
Body weight was below 800kg, 790kg.
Sensitive WEBER carburator required precise idle jet adjustment to pass the exhaust gas check, limited values of Carbon Oxide 4,5%, Hydro Carbon 1200 ppm.

Driver's weight

I just imagined about the accuracy of wheel alignments generally.
The lighter the automobile's body weight is, the more influenced by the weight of driver the steering reactons are? The burdening on the driver's seat at adequate weight is necessary if the ultimate accuracy is required on the wheel alignment and axle geomotry adjustments.
On the measurement next time on EP82 TOYOTA Starlet, I'm sure to obtain some different results from former measurment datam by the circumstancial setting, putting the weight on the driver's seat.



The error value is not a minutes but seconds revel, actually I feel especially after the tires replacement into Bridgestone RE-01 on BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model.
Bare in mind that the driver's weight must be set on the seat position before wheel alignment and axle constructive geometry measurements.
Probably different results would be obtained on newer trials.

My son has not stable emotional condition, eagering highest performance machinery, automobile, digital camera and so on.
I make it a rule to give younger person some suggestion, imagine what comes next after all?
Importance are not the way of advertisments nor how much it is spot lighted, but actually is it necessary for you?
Once flying up, it's difficult to come to himself---.

Precise Adj.


The difference of wheel bases on both side affect little on steering reacton, so generally said, but according to my experiments for these over ten years, it does affect clearly as a potential habit to make an appearance some time. This habit is unacceptable and nasty habit for automobile for me.
2,2 mm longer left wheel base was corrected on VW 1302 Super Beetle yesterday according to measured setback and swung rear end numerical values datum.
Value looks small enough to ignore as it is, this over 2mm value is too big to keep the automobile run straight without steering adjustment by the driver.
Suppose that a very slight angle movement on the steering easily changes the running direction especially on the high-way. So unpredictable steering pressure change because of ill rear wheel alignments is very inconvenient and unpleasant for any driving person.
Driving such kind vehicle requires ultimate concentration to keep straight running leading to fatigue.

Tolerance shrinkage




Hard working steps are silting up today. Problems are the replacement of brake fluid lines connecting reserve tank and master cylinder, just pilling a bit, and rear wheel alignment and axle geometry corrections, just writing like these is easy but actually not.
As for the procedures of adjustments, shims insertions trial must be done, taking time and being required ultimate concentrations because of precise works.
Step by step the tolerance must be shrunk as smaller as possible, not an unglamorous with patience inviting works.

Garden craftsmen are coming today for taking care of the Villa, so I must be there at any rate this before noon.

Two-tiers of 0,30mm thickness ribon spring as adjusting shim on left rear axle on VW 1302 Super Beetle wiped away all the problem in steering reaction.
Strange right side running tendency, all the habitual phenomena disappeared suddenly after shim insertion.
Only once trial could eliminated the uncertain steering feelings.
2,2mm longer left wheel base was corrected at the same time with cambers and thrust angle.
So I feel best this evening, because I'll not feel any inferiority complex even if I may go with Porsche 911 in the same generations.

Steering adapter



MOMO handle boss to MOTORITA adapter for old Mini was found out in the Web site. This adapter may be applicable to my purpose, VW 1302 Super Beetle handle interchange with that of MA10 Mazda Familia Rotary Coupe 40 years ago.
The diameter of the handle are same 40 cm, so I wanna use this long keeping memorial wooden handle on the new comer Beetle.
The shop is DELTA in Toyonaka city, on my way home I may drop in.
Additionally the price is 40% down for new year sale, no way to hesitate to pic it up.

Rear wheel alignments of VW 1302 Super Beetle were measured with LASER scaler, as previous feeling of right side running habit tendency, all of the datum showed the same as right habits numerically.

The thrust angle was minus 21,23 minutes> right side habit.

Cambers right 116 minute and left 102,4 minute > right side habit.

The difference of wheel bases, left side 2mm longer> right habit.

The wheel inclinations would be adjusted by inserting adjusting shims promptly, very complicated but interesting jobs.

Though MOMO boss MOTORITA adapter ring was obtained, the outer holes did not match with those of MA 10 Mazda handle, some arrangements may be necessary to adopt it well.

Fuel line

Fuel tank removal,steering gear box oil change with Microron application, universal joint boots replacements and joint rubber disk checking would ber performed this afternoon. Probably it would take time till late at night in the cold weather. Also fuel line would be checked again some copper pipe direction arrangement may be necessary.
Hard handle rotation of side glass needs repositioning of itself leading to door panel full disassembling.

JAN 45 Single Amp


Direct heated triode JAN 45 self bias is used for power tube and amplification is 6SN7 SRPP circuitry designed by myself. Relatively big Tango Power transformer affects the sound quality not a little.
The reason to use 45 ST tube is that the pure pre-war type triode has the tendency to produce the third harmonic distortion quite a little and the most of distortions left are second harmonic distortion. This means the sounds that is confortable on the ears, and make it possible to use it for long period of time requiring any patience.
The production company of this new JAN 45 is Radio Company of America, RCA. Though the sound is a bit hard and scratchy, some period of aging would make it better.

Three tasks together



Though rusted fuel line was remade externally with copper tube like this by the dealer, I'm not satisfied with this work. Much more sophisticated layout must be arranged and the ball recirculating steering gear box can be serviced only under the condition that the fuel tank is removed on any reason.
So, brake line re-renewal, fuel line sophistication and steering gear box servicing with special Teflon material intending to prolong it's life would be performed together at the same time.

Camber on VW 1302 Super Beetle




Precise frontal camber setting was performed today on VW 1302 Super Beetle. Finally 40 minutes negative cambers were applied on both side, considering about the traction wheels are rear and another F/R vehicle, SXE10 TOYOTA Altezza has 48 minutes negative cambers, there is no way to refuse 40 minutes negative value. Still now right side tendency exists after adequate frontal camber application, supposing the reason, set back. swung rear end meaning different wheel bases on both sides, rear different camber thrust and uneven toe value meaning chronic and unacceptable trust angle. Deeper considerations and precise adjustments would be required so far as I intend to exceed the performance of Porsche 911 at the same generation. Very interesting results must be waiting after establishing all the tasks on this 1302 Super Beetle.
By the way, the meaning of Volks Wagen is the same as Generally ordinal vehicle, not specially fine automobile like expensive Porsches.
But the designer is the same person Professor Ferdinand Porsche, so the fundamental components are very similar sometimes are the same or more reliable because the ultimate performances were not designed for Volks Wagen, on the other hand the reliability and the lives of every constructive parts were put an emphasis on the imaginations.
So the constructions are rougher than that of Porsche autos and the precise adjustments were not performed because of production costs.
My idea is like this, the geometry setting in construction and wheel alignments adjusting were established so adequately on this VW 1302 Super Beetle as to exceed those of Porsch 911, true Super Beetle would be appeared on earth by my desperate efforts!
This is why I did not choose old Porsche 911 as my hobby, enjoying the restore as 1/1 scale toy model.
Right head light mounting horizontal level is not correct counterclockwise distorted, adjusting level is necessary, bulbs must be replaced into clear ones because the light value of yellow colored bulb would not be enough to pass the legal inspection.
The silicon material of connecting tube between brake fluid tank and master cylinder has some problem, pilling was found in spite of replacements, hose material must be replaced to another reliable one. Do I ask specific genuine parts or utilize meshed nylon tube?
Then almost of main targets of restoring are overcome, do I try to have legal inspection for license plate in this coldest season, the periodical inspection at the same season in every two years would be waiting in futures?
After finishing this 1302 Beetle I'll resign this hobby and move to Airfoil field to now the recent sing shape designs, including actual experiments by myself.

Specific habit


The specific habit in steering reaction does not always exist and the habit from the rolling out of a specific automobile, the habit can be adjusted into correct neutral state or sometimes into the reverse phenomenon.

Today my lovely VW 1302 Super Beetle would be adjusted the chronic disease, right side tendency of the steering reaction while straight running that is mainly caused by the difference of frontal camber setting error, less negative camber on the right side axle construction.
Precise inspections last time revealed the facts that the strut mount is set too much out side which is mainly caused by ill setting of reinforcing thin plate inside of the strut tower on the right sid resulting in the sift of strut upper mount bolt holes outside. This body constructive error causes the wheel inclination to out side, more positive camber application.
Additionally the lower arm hinge position is set inside too much comparing with left side, the phenomena is mainly caused the basic bracket setting error, soldered with the plathome too much left side position. This error is convenient for negative camber setting for left side wheel, but the reduction of adjusting torelance on the right side. These compensations were tried last time, upper one on strut tower was finished but for the lower arm hinge construction is not done enough on the other hand.
This is the today's task in the coldest weather, being miserable but interesting!

Alignment's difficulty


Remember that 1302's simply constructed frontal axle is difficult to set up firmly. The frontal stabilizer plays parts of frontal lower arm and also tention rod. So, according to camber adjustments, the value of caster and scrub point are changed. The final goal is to set the equal value on both sides. Writing like this is very easy but actually not.

Inrush current?


7 years old 40 inches TV does not work as a digital terrestrial television.
Cable analogue TV tuner, TV, low frequency amplifier and CD player were plugged in the single table tap connecter with one switch, so the function was all on together and all off at the same time. The TV set was not put on and off not by the TV switch but by that of table tap connecter. The malfunction of digital tuner equipped in the TV set was caused by the switching habit for as long as 7 years, this is the opinion by my son.
If possible on his opinion, inrush current may be the reason, but many regulators inside? It's difficult to count it as a reason. According to the professional electric engineer, no connection with switching methods.
Now digital tuner equipped HDD recorder was newly obtained receiving all the digital terrestrial waves.

Geometry & Alignment






The strut upper mout position on VW 1302 Super Beetle was adjusted laterally inside with round filing procedure because the upper mount bolt hales were positioned too much outside. With the repositioning of upper mount 3,5mm inside in the right strut tower compensated 5 minutes camber inclination then now camber value is almost zero, lacks 10 minutes negative inclination. Next step would be lower arm hinge bush position adjustment toward outside, body bracket hole longer shape to outside 3mm and bush inner lace inner side 2 mm, under calculation 5mm adjust ment in total would attain 10 minutes nagative camber construction. Additionally the hub positions on both side would be slightly adjusted by repositioning the knuckles.
Though the purpose of applying negative camber setting, making strut mount position inside and making the lower arm hinge bush position outside have different meaning each other. The hub lateral position differs if the same negative inclinations were applied. Naturally the change of hub position causes the change of thrust angle of rear axle construction.
Bear in mind upper fact and truth, becasue they would not a little give influences on geometry and alignment setting that I come across very soon.

Exerting myself


In the coldest weather tried I to adjust frontal axle constructive geometry on VW 1302 Super Beetle. The adjustable portion is the lower arm inner hinge bush supported with cam design, so the most out side adjustment means that of negative camber direction.
Though the most outside adjustment for the trial on both side, 10 minutes negative camber was obtained on the left side, on the other hand right side was positive 5 minutes. As an initial measure strut upper mount displace toward inside was tried obtaining camber value zero degree. So the next step would be tried on coming Thursday, right lower arm displacement toward outside by adjusting inner bush cum constructive support, making holes longer to out side, bush inner race to inner direction and outer cum shape to flat.
Porsche 911 '71 has the camber value zero, so minus 15 minutes negative camber would be applied to my lovely VW 1302 Super Beetle according to my own experiences.

Nervous problem is downed rear suspension, this is caused by a heavy air conditioner compressor and condensor with evaporator, all are in rear end. Though straight running stability may be expected, too much negative camber causes slipping loss. Probably these kind of devices would be eliminated for many reasons.

Finding out some brake oil pilling on the connecting hose between reserve tank and brake master cylinder. How come? I considerd well the hose material, silicon one because of oil base quality, not ordinal butyl rubber tube. Anyway check it out! The reason, tube crack or melting? According to the conclusion, I must seek and find out the suitable connecting tube at any rate.
Now residual tasks are fuel line copper pipe hunger setting, wheel alignments and H4 head bulb replacement from yellow to transparent one.
Probably least half a month interval is required more.

Trembling up!


The most complecated procedures are required in the worst weather condition for VW 1302 Super Beetle today. Judging from the pressure distribution on the weather map in the Eastern Asia, cold wave from the continent has wholly covered Japan today. No way to be warmer.
Precise measurements and adjusting steps on wheel alignments and axle constructive geometries are waiting today in a coldest weather condition below zero degree like we are in a refrigerator, how come?
I make it a rule not to drive an automobile in snowy climate condition, avoiding unpredictable traffic accident and some delay to the destination. The drivers are not getting accustomed to drive on the snowy road condition, so the traffic accidents happen here and there in Osaka areas. It's far better take trains to my working place taking time only 20 minutes instead of by automobile for 40 minutes. Additionally stepping up and down at Juso Station is the good for health.

Today on VW 1302


After the replacement of frontal left strut upper mount, wheel alignment procedures are waiting on earth on VW 1302 Super Beetle. Though the camber values are positive in this generation, Porsche 911 had the zero camber setting, I've some intentions to apply negative 15 minutes based on my own experiences, besides the toe-in values would be 1mm on tire standards.
Disassembling, reassembling and adjust the machinery at the best performed condition, the automobile makes me have third eye and more forth eye on the same object. Though regarded I the automobile as a one piece of total machinery and the defect, disorder and malfunction ment all the construction were destructed together, after starting DIY I could come to seek the wrong one or two point. Naturally the replacement adjusting would regain the initial performance of the designed performances.
Anyway snowy outside, taking care of injuries while working on automobiles, go ahead!

Left frontal strut upper mount was replaced this afternoon in coldest circumstances. The tasks were digested relatively smooth in spite of complicated steps, arranged jacks and repaired air impact tool were of great helps.
The frontal wheel alignments would be measured and set adequately, the coldest day in this winter season, how come?

Big ope.







Big operations on VW 1302 Super Beetle were performed yesterday taking time from early in the morning till late at night in the coldest weather outside, of course exhausted completely.
Frontal lower arm bushes and strut upper mounts replacements were the tasks. Before that I had repaired air impact tool and it had been successfull, so it influenced me to overwork myself yesterday. But only the strut mount on the left side was left undone because of time limitation, the day after tomorrow I would continue it.
Thanks to diet control, my body condition is not so bad just a little bit tired and feel some muscle pains.
