Resultant Toe-in for Strut Beetle 1302

Generally, TOOT angle value is defined as 20 degree inner steering angle for outer one as 18 degree.
Common sense is so in the field, the turning stresses distributed on every 4 wheel differs promptly actually, it means that the most suitable TOOT value exist on a specific vehicle one by one. Every vehicle has it's own character at all.
My next performer is seeking the best and sweetest TOOT setting by some precise adjustment by myself.
Front Toe-in setting is the key to obtain it.
Actual scaling by LASER Pointer dot positioning and running test while turning phase, rising up reaction from the center position and the following linearity are the items to be concentrated.
As for my Strut Beetle 1302, 3.6 mm/1,000 mm Toe-in value was applied as a matter of fact.

The next performer

Though I have been making little of the mechanical construction of steering linkage without power assistance, some hysteresis phenomena on steering wheel center position forced me to open my eyes on it this time. Killing one inconvenience wakes another one, it's like a Mole head hitting game with may holes.
As is often the case in the field, Shimmy phenomena is not  the reason, just some discernible backlash on the steering wheel with no other problem.
By supporting lower arm of the strut  construction in 1 gravity condition, a mischievous origin of that should be detected from now.
Have I kept my eyes on the backlash existing in Idler arm supporting portion, disassembling and some counter measure would be required. This attempt would be continued till the stable and solid steering condition should be established on my Air-cooled Beetle 1302, now 8 years have passed since she came to me with cripple condition. It's nothing but a interesting way to kill my spare time.

TOOT adjusted

The wheel alignment adjustment in my vehicles obliges me to open my eyes one by one.
Once the item of Thrust Angle is executed, strange habit of steering reaction while turning becomes embossed, not linear and not honest.
20 degree turning angle, TOOT is adjusted according to the manner as  is applied in Toe-in adjusting scenery mentioned before.
Inserting the piled paper sheets between the tier tread surface and the ground, Toe-in condition is presented while steering turning action.
It's not so difficult task to adjust tie rod length as imagined before trying.
It goes without saying that the satisfactory steering action is obtained after an adequate adjustment.
The discrepancy of the Thrust Angle, derivation of dull and muddy steering reaction, produces some unnecessary stress on all the tire tread surfaces, so strange bad habits are mislead by the drivers, including noisy tire sliding noise like a Panzer Tank.
Let's enjoy light footsteps like a rabbit!

2nd periodical inspection

Five-year flow for VW Golf 7 GTI required the second periodical checking by the Authority and was I obliged to come out for the purpose to Kobe Land Transportation Bureau this morning.
No problem was found on the checking line, but Anti Skid System killing switch did not put on, no lighting, instead the information was shown in the meter cluster inside. Was I upset for a moment, without killing the automatic action, I could not pass the speed meter checking. Because the system close the throttle valve before coming to 40km/h.
Anyway, I would like to continue this Golf 7 GTI for more 2 years from now.
VW DSG trans-axle controlling system performs far better than I do in any situations. I must recommend that the computer system is above human capability in manual transmission activity.

ASO 91st Regular Concert

The 91st Regular Concert by Ashiya Symphony Orchestra was held so successfully last evening at Nishinomiya Hyogo Performing Arts Center Grand Hall.
All the audience must have been satisfied so much by their desperate efforts.
Program were followings:
G.Mahler/Totenfeier

F.List/Concerto for Pianno & Orchetstra Mo.1 in E. flat majore
Allegro maestro, Allegro vivace-Allegro animato, Quasi adagio and Allegro marziale animato-Presto

J. Sibelius/Symphony No.2 in D major Op. 43
allegretto, Tempo andante, ma nubato-Andante sestenuto, Vivacissimo-Lento e suave-attacca and Finale. Allegro moderato-Moderato assai-Molt largemente

All of the program were well performed without any problem.
Though I was anxious about the first one, might be too dark and heavy, it was in vain.
Mr. Haruka Kuroiwa, the son of the Conductor Mr. Hideomi Kuroiwa played superb and they hugged each other on the stage with the best impressions.
The ASO has been making much progress year by year, hoping their next concert, 92nd one would be held on September the 9th Saturday, we are looking forward to it.

The relation between Rear Total Toe & Thrust

Rear total toe 10 minutes equivalents 2.9 mm toe-in when converted. Judging from the reliable datum declared by the professionals saying that the most reasonable value is toe-in 3 mm, VW company's specified value is quite to the point, "Total Toe-in 10 minutes".
My Golf 7 GTI had 17 minutes toe-in value originally, it is an apologizing tolerance, compared with 10 minutes plus minus 10.
It had not apparent bad habit and went straight relatively with a strange feeling like picking hip pulling backward. Such feeling might be perceived as some straight stability.
Beginning phase from center steering position was dull, muddy and sticky, just I don't like.
Too much rear toe-in value might have been applied intentionally to cheat Thrust Angle discrepancy?
Clean and pleasant straight running feel differs from that obtained by applying too much rear Toe-in value.
In the condition of 10 minutes rear total toe, Thrust Angle must be as less as possible very near to Zero.
Otherwise, strange wondering bad habit appears when the vehicle stops and starts or on the furrow.
Also, steering hunching phenomena appears wondering where to go.
Unreasonable steering action makes the driver bewilder leading to driving fatigue.
I heard that Suzuki Company mechanic engineer does alignment while the car is empty, how come?

Necessity of Thrust Trim for a vehicle

Wheel alignment and axle constructive adjustment on VW Golf 7 GTI are over after exchanging front wheels as a matter of fact. She goes straight without steering adjustment at all, score is 99 point if I apply.
25,000 km used wider tires require desperate effort to obtain straight running, without any adjustment consciously and unconsciously.
The Thrust Angle value within the tolerance, plus minus 10 minutes angle value and actual Zero Thrust differ each other at all.
Also the thrust angle changes according to burdening condition, with a driver only or with an assistant and heavier baggage.
So, the adjustment to establish Zero Thrust condition should be done under some specific condition logically.
In addition, residual fuel in the tank affects on the datum.
Anyway, Zero Thrust is difficult to establish because of the procedures under the condition of physical property of flexible rubber materials, tires and bushes.
Because have I experiences on this alignment adjustment to have done that for 20 years, I try it, who on Earth will do that except manufacturer's engineers specialized in the research and developing divisions?
An airplane pilot does  "Trim Adjusting" on every three dimensional wings as a routine work, because if the procedures were not done, the airplane cannot keep straight flight.
As for vehicles, thrust adjustment is done by a driver unconsciously to keep straight running.
Of course, caster, toe, SAI, scrub contribute to keep straight running, but fundamental discrepancy cannot be removed. It is just like a bud neutral Rudder is compensated by Aileron trim.
The discrepancy on the Thrust must be corrected by thrust adjustment, Scientific and Physiologic phenomena cannot be denied and be deceived.

As my proposal to the vehicle manufacturers, how about applying "Thrust Trim" in a sophisticated hi-end model and the adjusting action might be left on the fashionable "IA technology"?
The value of the car increases dramatically, no?

Clogged discrepancy

Long time use as long as 25,000 km causes Tire Conicity, so to speak uneven tire wear, under the condition of Thrust discrepancy with plus 11 minutes. Especially, such kind of tendency is observed with wider tire tread surfaces.
Though the wheel alignment and axle construction are well re-fixed following the manufacturer's manual, left side run bad habit, very slightly, remains in Golf 7 GTI, so I come to the conclusion that the phenomena should be caused by Tire Conicity.
This is why I describe above.
So, I replaced and exchanged rear wheel right to left each other, resulting far better coming to 95 percent as my perception. Centric steering stability has improved while straight running.
I'm at a loss how to proceed, continue like this condition or do the same exchanging on the front as the rear wheels.
It is very troublesome if the rate of discrepancy is very slight.
'71 VW Super Beetle 1302 has no electric entertainment system except AM radio, also no power assistant with motor such as power window, power steering assist, power gate support and even blower fan.
Counting the number of electric motor, wiper, starter and dynamo in all, no electric water pump for window shield shower.
Window washer pressure is supplied by spare tier's one.
Consequently, the recent Info-tainment system burdened in Golf 7 is just a nothing but a appendicitis for me.
Wanna I remove thoroughly all of them, especially idling motor stop system. Though the function is stopped by a switch off, it remembers every attitude of ignition off. So, an unnecessary ceremony should be repeated on every getting off and ride in.
Unexpected event, motor stop while signal waiting phase, makes me panic at all remembering my past when I had been in a Homologation Peugeot Talbot 205 Rallye with WEBER 40 DCOM side draft independent mechanical  carburetors. As we know, there exist some difficulty to re-start with the mechanical carburetor when the cylinders are in hot condition, because of spatter and smolder.
Anyway, unexpected motor stop in Golf 7 remind me of the old bad and dangerous memories.
As for my opinion, too much comfort and safety assistant utilizing recent technology invites the most dangerous "Sleepiness" with monotonous highway straight running.
Of course the engineers know about this problem, Awaking system they invented is enough to countermeasure the driver's condition?
I don't think so, the driver is sleeping in case of some inevitable eager necessity with his or her eyes opening, loosing the perception and awareness for a while with accelerator on.
As proverb says, "Too much support makes a child spoiled.", too much intervention into driver's sensitivity would invites sleepiness, remember, this is the most dangerous and fatal problem for all the drivers in the World!
Contrary, remaining some wheel alignment discrepancy might be of help to keep the driver awake in monotonous straight running driving condition.
This is why I refrain from adjusting my son's vehicle HONDA STWG Spada AWD, with plus 10 minutes thrust angle.

Tube Amp accident



My first miserable experience happened the day before yesterday. An indispensable Vacuum Tube Diode was destroyed by Inrush current when the toggle switch was turned on, apparently destructive spark was observed, how come! Parallel connected capacitor for the prevention might have been killed because of age?
Hatred rush current is caused by the big volume capacitor connected on power supply circuitry at the beginning phase. Some reasonable circuitry for the prevention exists utilizing semiconductors and it is possible for me to set it in my tube amp, but I would not like to do that in a classic circuitry at all. Basically, I'm afraid of some change of sound character by adding unnecessary parts.
The Rectifier formed with 4 solid semiconductors changes sound quality completely.
Though a replacement Russian Tube Diode is put on it for emergency, I'll look for some suitable one in the Web site.
As I do not have the way to countermeasure except in my experience, a study on this kind of problem begins now.
JBL 20 cm full range speakers sound best in my listening room for as long as 30 years.
