Bocar 34PICT3


Bocar 34PICT3 carburetor for air cooled VW has obtained in YaHoo Auction last night at 3,350 yen. Judging from the photos shown there, no trick scar was observed.
This parts is used as a teaching aid for my own understanding on the behavior and the structure. Though no Solex letter is found on the case, the construction must be the same as Solex 34PICT3.
Identifying all the nozzles, main jet, pilot jet, emulsion tube and idle jet are the main purpose as information.

The number of 34 shows air venturi size, the difference must exist in the transient of acceleration.
As the Bocar has the orifice nipple for retarding diaphragm action, the production age must be 1971 and the distributor set in combination with special twin vacuum diaphragm actuator. The idling ignition timing must have been set at ATDC 5 degree.
More considerations would be possible if new coming Bocar carburetor is disassembled.

Cylindrical roller bearing


Desperate effort is required for outsider like myself to determine for action, disassembling the rear axles on both side of VW 1302 Super Beetle.

Judging from the illustration, the outer hub is supported by cylindrical roller bearings, on the other hand inner is done by ball bearings. Basically must I understand the reason and the difference role for the first. Both of them are sized, 62-30-20.
Because of preventing the lateral displacement, roller bearing is applied on outer portion? There must be some difficulty to set up them on adequate positions precisely?

Before ordering the bearing parts, outer roller bearing must be known what type of roller ones, at least three types exist in the category.

By the way,F3A Radio control invitational tournament, pattern aerobatic performance category should be held on 28th and 29th this end of month at Awaji Island model airplane airport? What has become of them? It was held in the Typhoon condition?

IRS hub backlash


Because of backlashes on rear wheel hub, feel I some strange reactions occasionally. So, I'm going to replace inner and outer bearings on both sides, replacement parts are available in Web site shopping including oil seal and O-rings.
Judging from this illustration, some special tool like big oil compressor and pusher and supporter in adequate sizes.
And the accuracies in seating bearing outer laces are required in the constructing scenery.

Before that, disassembling of rear trailing arm is the first step supporting strong main torsion bar spring tension power.
Though unexperienced procedure, is it actually possible for me?
Anxiety in case of accident occurs in my mind this time?
Coil spring compression procedures were experience several times, but torsion bar spring is the first time, how come?

Anyway replacement parts would be ordered in addition to seat cover kit to Toyama Beetle House in very near future.

Engine stop tendency and unstable idling often caused by the reason, the thermostat device is out of order, so the barn doors
(flaps) are kept fully opened from the beginning of first idling starting in the morning.
Probably the parts replacement on the mechanical controller would solve this problem, long lasting chronic phenomena would be overcome at the next thermostat replacement servicing.

After that the acceleration begins immediately after accelerator pedal action and strange stumbling habit disappeared around low speed rotation.
I feel like the sweetest angular throttle position has found out by this adjustment and the residual procedure is idle speed fuel mixture control only, not so difficult task for me.

He mentioned in addition on the problem about the vacuum leak on the center supporting shaft of the throttle butterfly. Some modification like inserting rubber O ring and plastic washers may prevent the inconvenient leak on the portion. So application of bronze bushes there may not always be necessary?
This is only an opinion by an unexperienced layman, so some experimental trials must be necessary to conquer this chronic disease?

Anyway many trial tasks are waiting for me on air cooled VW Beet on earth.

Why mechanical control now?

The weather forecast tells #2 Typhoon coming near Kinki district before dawn tomorrow with no landing just on the sea in weakened power condition.

The automobiles now on sale are fully controlled by inboard computer called ECU(Engine Control Unit), so driver would not know the difficulties to control and to adjust by human power just only with mechanical methods without any electric sensors and electric actuators, except in case of out of order.
But even dysfunctions could be analyzed and judged so quickly on diagnosis system leading to identifying the defected parts resulting quick repairing.

I didn't realize this facts and truth that electric devices and semiconductors play a great parts of total control on automobile until I had an opportunity to repair and restore 40 years old and fully mechanically controlled air cooled VW Beetle.

But I know that the adjustments can change according to my own preferences in any way if I change the point of views, yes, the curiosity and interests are to the points restoring old automobiles.

For example, contact point gap, ignition timing, idle speed, air/fuel ratio in every phase, the activation ratio of acceleration pump, automatic choke module angular position, mechanically slipping resistor in clutch linkage, also brake one,all of them are factors to affect on driving feel.
Doing all by myself and establishing my taste are great fun for me like some cooking chef with no way to change anything else.

Shutting all the windows and doors, some reinforcement in detail of the house must be necessary.
We may have hard time on coming two day.

Idling adjustment



There exist a little angle of dead zone on throttle butterfly of Solex 34PICT3 carburetor, the inconvenience is like this, from the idling position the motor rotation doesn't accelerate immediately when acceleration wire was pulled. The stumbling and hesitating phenomena may be caused by this silent period, dead zone?

As an experimental trial, how about eliminate this dumb angle at idling position by screwing in the idle stopper adjusting screw?
Reversible trial must be worth doing in order to seek and decide the most adequate throttle butterfly opening position in initial point, idling position.
Throttle butterfly angular position is very important not only for idling phase but also from low to middle speed rotation with natural transition.

Basically lean setting Solex 34PICT3 is sensitive in adjusting transient at lower regular revolution.
Trends migration with smooth connection must be established.
Of course I know that the specialized professional's keen sense is required to carry out this adjustment perfectly, I'm going to do that!

Futures


I realized that there exists beautiful scenery in my neighborhood called Arima-Fuji, Fuji being called after the actual Mt.Fuji in Shizuoka Pref., and Arima being the famous place as the Spa Town.
It looks like actual one if judged after the information, though the scales are basically different.

Though we have had enough physically in Japan comparing with underdeveloped countries, it would be difficult in future to keep the current standard of daily lives.
As proved in the WW2, the repeated shots by the natural power of the economy cannot be overcome only by moral theories nor by flag waving attitudes.
We'll have hard period of time at least for these 10 years from now as Germany did after East and West integrations.

Comfort or Taste?

With all GPS Navigater I lost my way back home around Eitaku Temple, how come? In addition to the accident loosing my way, the restaurant "Sugar" was closed in spite of their periodical holiday has been set on Tuesdays?

After contact point gap resetting at 0,45mm, the condition of AD motor in VW 1302 Super Beetle recovered original performance today. I wonder is it necessary so often to calibrate this fundamental mechanical important construction? If not, what's wrong on me?
Some modifications to Full Transistor Ignition System must be seriously considered?

Which do I choose, comfort or taste on driving an automobile?
Suppose I'm obliged to choose one of two, in such a situation as to choose MB E-300 or this old VW Beetle, now I would choose Beetle without any hesitations. I prefer driving taste to driving conveniences and comforts.

We are going to have heavy rain fall tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, so I dare dropped in VW shop Shelms in Ibaragi City to obtain the service hole cap made of black plastic preventing rain water invasion into the blush portion, having been caused circuity cutting forming Oxide Film on the commutator surface. Avoiding charging deficiency, my attitude this afternoon was to the point.

Japanese noodles chain shop appeared at Nakayama in Takaraduka City along the Rout 176 old road, as imagined the taste and the interior design was the same as another restaurant with the same name. Not so good but not so bad was the impressions.

Endless efforts

We may have some tendency to judge an automobile only from just the overview and the equipped motor power, recently the economy and the ecology. Especially the car designing how it looks is the primarily important for the producing company.

Over 10 years researches on wheel alignment adjusting and geometric axle constructions have realized me of the much more importance in automobile than the upper descriptions.
They are the physical properties of chassis designing based on scientifically proved and established theories.
There must be a huge and high wall to be overcome in front of the engineers before manufacturing new model and rolling out them as products.
On the way,the stacked technologies and know-hows are required utmost to solve the problems to establish the equivalences standing on bipolar.

I could come to the point to know and to feel the designer's concept, intentions and demands in that automobile designs.
Even 20 years old or 40 years old car designing have enough amazing factors on earth.
Coming deep inside of industrial designing is of great interests for me and this kind of self habit would continue till I go.

Efforts by factory engineers

The backlash in steering linkage spoils the drive feel so much, so realized I again to have replaced the idler arm bracket into VW genuine countermeasure replacement parts. Though the rate of compliance was reduced, the backlash was removed instead resulting the better performance on surer steering reactions.
Realized I again that I must tell the compliance as buffer effects from backlash, distortion and deformation.

Also the automobile designing is built upon the balance between the Act and the Strain on earth.
They are all of professional's works that's far from the imaginations of outsiders, because the engineers in the field work on scientifically proved the fact and the truth by the experimental results with their own efforts.
Basic design of axle designing had been established at that time and no remarkable change was to be seen except the motor and trans-axle controls by electric semiconductor's introductions.

I have studied much on the industrial production technology of automobile by restoring 40 years old ancient VW Beetle this time, it was far better to have advocated it than to have done nothing for these 6 month interval.

Fuel mixture control


Generally an internal combustion engine requires much more fuel in high humidity atmosphere like rainy day.
Solex 34PICT3 carburetor in VW 1302 Super Beetle is set originally in lean mixture considerably because of Anti-Pollution concept invited in 1970.
Main jet is factory set at #127, this one should be replaced into #130, the stumbling and hesitating acceleration would not be improved if the volume of acceleration pump is adjusted utmost.

Upper description is obtained from Web site and I'm going to try this procedure, by not make a hole drilling by exchange main jet itself replacement, without burning out the safety bridge until passing through completely.
I really admire the superior capability of recent computerized automobile especially in the compensations and corrections of atmospheric changes.

Compliance


Replacement of idler arm bracket in steering linkage realized me of difficulty in accomplishing the design in both astringency and compliance for vibration and noise on steering linkage construction.

The VW genuine new parts is designed for prevention of handle shimmy phenomena by replacing from rubber compliance bush into one piece bronze sleeve. As the result, stability of steering reaction increased but the capability of compliance for noise and vibration decreased, steering handle transmits both of them, just became worse.

In order to eliminate this kind of inconvenience, rubber material or engineering plastic are naturally applied on the way of combination.
The arrangement this time gaining astringency has connected body chassis and steering linkage directly, resulting the increased noise and vibration. 
This is the most nervous point for the factory design engineer to stand together what are bipolar.

Steering dumper



Of course I know the steering dumper is equipped intending buffering action as being in MB designs now.
I feel unnatural reaction on VW 1302 Super Beetle, the deeper steering turning, the heavier the reaction force becomes.

As an experimental trial, removing dumper device test must be performed, no problem would happen because of reversible modifications.
Steering astringency may be increased if it is tried under the condition that the axle geometry and wheel alignments were precisely established.
New dumper replacement parts arrived already.

Rear hub bearing backlash is nervous problem on earth leading to new ordering of replacement parts again. I knew from the Web site information that the bearing size 63-30-20 is relatively rare production, outer one is cylindrical roller bearing and inner one is deep crevice ball bearing. Oil sealing materials must be ordered together with heavy parts promptly.

Test driving




It rained last night cats and dogs, the scenery immediately after rain fall is excellent for photograph.
On my way in test driving, Lake Senjyouji in Sanda City was better than usual.

Overworked myself

Unfavorable weather condition today prevent me from proceed next step on the servicing for VW 1302 Super Beetle.

Concentration on working for too long period of time made me nervous last night. Continuing 6 hours without taking water must have caused dehydration. So much water I took incredibly after the final test driving, Care must be taken on the bulk of task to be digested at the time and on the health condition of myself.

Most of the free time today would be spent for various maintenance on tools, devices and equipments. There are many to do for them in my laboratory room. Take care not to overwork myself today.

OPEL B-Vectra is waiting for maintenance and several replacement parts are arrived already,taking her to working place today. How about proceed to replace the special figure hose combining secondary air pump with control valve, while removing heavy battery is the most convenient opportunity for the purpose.

Replacement parts




Steering idler arm bracket was replaced into countermeasure genuine parts for VW 1302 Super Beetle today,additionally knuckle ball joint parts were done as same manner.
Supplied new parts are seldom to be lubricated enough,luck of grease is as usual.
Compensated all with chrome molybdenum grease was injected with disposable medical syringe.
The bush impacted in the bracket was one piece bronze material instead of originally rubber and inner iron sleeve construction.
Old knuckle ball joint had lost smooth movement on both side.
The accuracy and stability increased after the parts replacements. Steering drifting around centric steering position, so to speak wondering bad habit disappeared.
Thanks to the parts supplier in Tokyo and Kanagawa, my Beetle regains original physical property and performances.

Clutch lever ratio


According to the information from Machine Head in Wakayama City, there exist a longer clutch release lever that reduces tread force on clutch pedal.
Only 10mm extension could reduce the burden on clutch pedal of Skyline Japan 211 model,so I remember. Judging from the photo shown by Machine Head, considerable change of pedal pressure is expected. About 30mm or more extension would mean big change of the rear lever ratio.

Replacing release lever parts is one method, another way is extending the original lever by adding extension parts.
About 15mm extension would be suitable for modifying this portion,so I imagin.
Deeper consideration is required because the change of lever ratio there would affect on driving feel not a little.

Idler arm bracket


Newly obtained measured VW genuine parts, idler bracket has adjustable arm stopper on both side.
Tire side wall hitting problem on both side as I have now, because of wider but genuine steel wheel wearing.
Such kind of inconvenience would be eliminated after adjusting with this replacement parts.

Though minus factors spoiling steering actions appears one after another, I'll overcome with desperate efforts like a mole bashing game.

Let's remember here that the vulnerability of the constructive parts may compensate the errors in wheel alignment and constructive geometry,so the errors hidden by weak parts may close up the incompletion more than before?

As I'm prepared with confidence for any problem caused by the errors in some wheel alignment and in geometric constructions.

Inconvenience


To tell the truth, a critical problem was found while brake shoe adjustment, considerable backlash on right rear hub bearing. The rate of clearance has enough capability to cause strange steering actions.
In very near future,replacement of rear hub bearings on both sides would be performed, involving the replacement of trailing arm hinge bushes inner and outer on both sides.
Complicated and troublesome procedure of removing torsion spring separation step must be experienced no matter how I may agree or not.
I must do that if this VW 1302 Super Beetle may be continued.

According to my experience for these 10 years on wheel alignment adjustment principle,15 seconds(angle value) error of thrust angle is enough to produce the strange steering action while straight running.
So the rate of backlash found yesterday was big value enough to destroy the reliability on measuring alignments basic point,it would be no meaning to measure and adjust wheel alignment now with wheel hub backlash on rear right side.
Wheel alignment should be established under the solid and fixed mechanical wheel constructions, the backlash must be as less as possible.
My Beetle would be corrected on wheel alignment and axle construction geometry when the replacements of rear hub bearing on both side were performed and elimination of backlash were established.

As replacement parts on hub bearing, I dare select Japanese production because of the reliability in quality control of domestic industrial companies, NSK,NMB,NTN and NACHI.
Before all,I must know the size of the bearing to be replaced into Japanese ones,based on JIS(Japanese Industrial Standard) or ISO(International Organization for Standardization), probably the former considering ancient production periods.

Task in the afternoon

Brake shoes adjustment on VW 1302 Super Beetle far improved braking performance, the transition from rear to front became so smooth and braking power has increased.
Rear left side leading shoe had relatively excessive clearance, this was the reason to have said professional mechanic inadequate balance on pedal touching.

After minimizing the clearance between brake shoe and brake drum inner surface on all the wheels, the brake pedal position has come near to the driver.
However hard I may pay attentions to the adjustment, the work was not perfect enough to attain the result like professional's works.
This is not because of lack of capability but because of lack of experiences.
I knew again that the skills would be nourished by error corrections by myself.

Mold smell

Thanks to OPEL Yokohama BBS the way to clean the evaporator in B-Vectra,having been suffered from terrible smell of molds accumulator as long as 15years. Kindly the person there showed the way to access dusty and mold accumulated parts for air conditioner,evaporator with photo here.

The cleaning emulsion for family use should be enough to clean up this kind of small device. It's the season for maintain air conditioner before rainy season,so it must be relatively easy to obtain some cleaning sprays.

Carp Fishing Competition



My friend showed Carp Fishing Competition in Osaka held in Yodo River and northern Osaka Yamato River last Fall.
The winner in Yodo River picked up over 1,000mm, and even a small child could do the same with great and desperate effort by herself.
Comparing with Yodo River, Carps in Yamato River are smaller tendency with 86,5cm at the longest.
Of course all the carps picked up at that time would be returned to the original residences alive and safe,though it's a very troublesome and confused matter for fishes to have been picked up from the water.

Countermeasure

An idler arm bracket in steering linkage was ordered that is measuring for handle shimmi phenomena. I feel the reason why the unreliable steering reaction on VW 1302 Super Beetle might be some lack of strength in geometric construction of steering linkage.
I'm going to erase the distortions of stress concentration points one by one.
Newly ordered counterplanning genuine parts has solid diecasted body with pressing set bronze bush eliminating positional movement of idler arm hinge position.
Replacing with this relatively expensive parts would carry some good result in steering action,but remember here that that changing the hinge position into unmovable design means loosing some compliance for avoiding kick back phenomena on steering position,destroying the balance of original constructive design,as too much application of sound and vibration insulation material on the rear fire wall destroyed the balance and the residual gears and bearing moving high frequency noises have been emphasized after all now.
Unreliable steering action has much to do with the lateral stability on rear axle construction,especially on the bushes equipped in trailing arm hinge portion. Paying best attentions on the point,checking rear axle construction is indispensable procedure.

Radio antenna booster was obtained intending the modification to inboard on VW 1302 Super Beetle.
With base attaching screw of 5mm diameter pole antenna is prepared already that's originally for B-Vectra.
What kind of radio receiver is suitable for Old Beetle's dash board, without destroying design matching balance?
This is on of a fun with worries.

Finacial support?

Not a day passes without being broadcasted about The Earthquake and The destruction of Nuclear Power Plant in Japan.

Global world news does European financial crisis.

Does German country has enough capability to support G and P financially?
Is there any anxiety to come to bankrupt all of them together?

Must the people living in the another portion support refuges from The Earthquake area and The Nuclear Plant by means of increased Tax?
The difference between them are the affair in the Europe area but in relations with different nations and ours are those in the same country.

Then how much must the people who escaped some disaster support refuges?
Of course I basically agree with the concept of helping each other in case of inconvenience like disasters this time,but a simple question occurs in my mind, how much and how deeply must I have any relations with them?

BOSCH alternator

The alternator in B-Vectra was replaced into new one,no remarkable change was to be recognized in the charging capabilities, before/after.
The gravity of electrolyte reduces after a month and a half with black colored indicator.

BOSCH 120A alternator looks like having enough charging capability judging from the number 120,but actually not? Out put voltage is controlled at 13,5V no more,on the other hand DENSO's controlled voltage is 14,5V.
The difference of charging input voltage 1V has deeper meaning for charging capability and battery's life.

The control terminals are D and ignition lamp,on the other hand for example DENSO alternator has additional terminal to check the battery voltage and to control charging modes.
This difference of conceptions affects in relatively slow traffics like those of Japan.

Understanding the charging bad habit on B-Vectra,I make it a rule to performing some additional charging ceremony every 90 days intervals.
This is the key to continue this mischievous automobile without battery troubles.

Enjoyment

The motors in automobiles are almost fully controlled by electric Engine Control Unit and the ignition timing is adjusted in combination with trans-axle control unit also.
So the character of the motor is the same if the model are so.
The conditions and driving feel has much to do with the setting of the motor inside.

Old carburetor controlled motors had different characters each other because of small adjusting errors.
In another words, there exits some possibility to adjust the motor on the personal taste.
Ignition timing,carburetor setting and valve timing are the adjustable depending on the choice.

As for my opinion the elimination of adjusting procedure on these points spoils the fun for automobile if the controls are perfect with computer and excellent sensors.
But for sophisticated sensors, it difficult to keep the condition of automobile motors stable on earth.

It was not perceived that the recent automobiles are best controlled by electric devices till I do the same on fully mechanically controlled old automobile, VW 1302 Super Beetle.

Disassembling pedal construction yesterday proved that my VW 1302 Super Beetle has not been used for these 40 years interval through the degree of wear on clutch wire hook,30,000km on the cluster meter must be true.
The performance condition is almost attained by the maintenance for these 6 months comparing with ones of original VW 1302 Super Beetle.
Then residual tasks are knuckle ball joints replacement,steering idler bush replacement,rear trailing arm hinge bushes inner and outer replacement and body painting.

Pedal friction





The pedals construction was removed and disassembled on VW 1302 Super Beetle today intending lubrication and precise resetting.
As I've an unforgettable memory that the lack of lubrication on pedal hinges was one of the reason to throw away '72 1200cc STD Beetle 40 years ago. It's a matter for regret that I didn't have enough capability to do that by myself.
But now I can, so I did it at any rate in order to revenge myself at that time.
Three pedals were combined in one piece for space saving and shafts and pipes construction,so not a little friction is performed in case of lack of lubrication. Microflon mixed with gear oil was applied to reduce friction resistance.
Clutch wire fuck shows how much this part had been used?
The reason why I insist on the point is that the lubrication on pedal hinge portion is indispensable maintenance to establish clutch meeting so smooth.
The position relations between the clutch pressure plate and clutch plate is discerned and transient of pressure that isn't flat and even on the way but the exponentially increases at the time of meeting, such transitions are felt on the bottom of foot if the friction is reduced.
This is why I put an emphasis on the point.

Wild Fuji was in full bloom now in the deep mountain,photo was taken while the testing drive today.


The reason of the problem,no charging by generator was caused by the water invasion into the service hole of the device.
Finger pushing on the blushes for a few seconds could recover the charging capability so easily, being in vain so serious anxiety.
The criminal of the trouble this time was the oxide thin film on the surface of commutator
Heavy rain fall a few days ago let me know that how harmful a raining cats and dogs on the Beetle with cooling holes was and that the exiting water between blushes and commutator copper material easily produce oxide film affecting with sparkling.
It goes without writing that the oxide film cuts the fluent charging current flow leading the ignition lamp putting on meaning no charging fatal phenomena.
The service hole cap parts,lost from the beginning,should be compensated as soon as possible.
Also I knew the contact point parts easily cause first stage current inefficiency depending on the holding screw tightening methods,contact points terminal surfaces should be kept clean,flat and firm conditions.

Today's task is clutch pedal linkage lubrication.

Anxiety





I miss VW 1302 Super Beetle on earth,because her charging system is out of order since three days before yesterday.
Most of free time this afternoon would be spent to check the generator and voltage regulator both mechanically and electrically.
In case that any irreparable damage were found, some replacement parts must be ordered,probably a generator,regulator or both of them.
I must also consider about the bonnet leak in the heavy rain fall not to be drenched inside of the generator and the distributor.
Anyway driving on any anxiety is not interesting for me and wiping out any kind of bad feeling caused by insecurity.

Deeper consideration on the failure few days ago, the primary cause must be some adhesion and sticking by the sparkling in the brush inside of generator with brush holder influenced by the water invasion.
So, simply disassembling of the brush holder construction and lubrication of the portions may recover the original physical performances as a generator. Before that I would do pushing brush check using plastic stick.
In the worst case some checking on voltage regulator may be required, involving replacement of semiconductors for example schottky diode?

5/13 Direct or Alternative current?

My old friend who has been a professional mechanic engineer for servicing to automobile suggested that the problem this time is not so critical as to be resumed the original performance by just blowing away rain fall water inside of the dumb generator or by just pushing the blushes gently while motor were rotating if the reason was just a heavy rainfall.
So take it easy the problem on VW 1302 Super Beetle this time and how about replacing it into adequate AC alternator in near future? He is old enough to forget the VW old Beetle was air-cooled model?
That means the extension of generator drive shaft on the opposite side exists the big working cooling fan indeed?
I'm going to check the adaptation of blushes on commutator and to make recovering the original performance tomorrow.

5/13 Uneasiness

Because there were some difficulty to post blog yesterday, now I serve them this morning.

I'm defeated not a little because the charging system on VW 1302 Super Beetle doesn't work properly. So she doesn't continue driving until the battery charging system is repaired as before.
There are several ways to be imagined,just replacing main voltage regulator,replacing generator as it is,replacing both of them or replace the system into new alternator.
I'm at a loss what to choose?

I knew about the sight seeing spot,Ohmihachiman situated in north eastern part of Biwa Lake. Beautiful ancient scenery and Japanese old style restaurant are the enjoyable,sometimes old movies are taken around the canal,"Hachimanbori". Country style restaurant Kihee in Shinmachi is my favorite, being only in lunch menu Special Carp Dish is the most recommended one.
All the dishes are processed only by the female owner of the restaurant with no professional cook,with old style but sophisticated atmosphere especially her talks and the well treated small Japanese garden inside.

Resembles string tuning?

To tell the truth, I've moved idle stopper screw unintentionally few days ago and the condition of AD motor in VW 1302 is disconnected with the best condition. The reason is clear that the throttle butterfly position isn't in the best position,too much opened or too much closed,may be opened.
Judging fror the the information in the Web sites on Solex 34PICT3 carburetor, the throttle butterfly initial angular position is fundamentally important to be fixed firmly as the starting position of carburetor setting procedures.
Then why did I moved the throttle positioner,such an important and critical point?
The mistake is based on the point that the 34PICT3 carburetor should have the stopper at the most closest throttle butterfly position, so I had believed,otherwise the 0,0004 inch thickness cannot be established using some gauge.
I realized that no stopper exists for throttle butterfly there after some considerable loosening of positioning screw on earth!
Now the positioner is set now around the original position but not so accurate as information.
I know the butterfly angular position requires very precise adjustment and should be firmly fixed for following adjustment, there exist three spraying holes and the fuel is supplied adequately according to the rate of throttle opening.
The butterfly angular position in relations with spraying holes near the closest throttle position would never be known until ascertain in direct visible checking after removing the carburetor from the intake manifold?
The carburetor setting resembles the tuning on music strings devices, so said in the VW video.
Strange phenomena that the idling speed increases when stopped on rising slope?
Anyway carburetor would be checked including closing state route in very near future.

HDD replaced note PC

As for my notebook personal computer installed Windows XP Home Edition has downloaded Service pack3 after pack2 installation in addition to 71 additional corrective programs installations, though the formatting is FAT32 because of Home Edition. Spybot was copied as a file to new HDD, but no action even icon was activated, concluding just copying files has no meaning.
Downloading and installing procedures are indispensable for the applications.

My Beetle's story

In spite of my concept that no same model again in my automobile selection, I chose air-cooled Beetle again since 40 years ago.
I used 1200cc standard model in 1972 for 50,000km without good understandings on mechanical constructions of Beetle.
Now I payed attentions to old Beetle and enchanted by it's excellent design as a machinery.
She doesn't have any power assists,power steering,power window, powered brake system nor powered gate opener. So the tasks for motor and battery are just for starter,for generator,for ignition firing and for cruising including oil pump and cooling fan operation.
Air-cooled old Beetle is a automobile just like backing to the basics.

I've been looking for the Beetle used only a few Mileage below 50,000km, because of the difficulty on servicing the motor and the trans-axle for outsider.
I happened to come across with the target satisfying my desires in Wakayama City and the axle of the Beetle was sophisticated independent suspensions F/R, 1600cc Super Beetle.
All conditions were met with my intention!
This is the story to have bought this VW 1302 Super Beetle half a year ago.
Ultra desperate efforts were required for six months to get her down as to obtain Legal License Plate numbered 13-02.

Primitive desire

A young man like my son might have some desire to run about on public roads in a sport car or modified one, but remember here drivers there are doing dutifully according to the Road Traffic Act and Road Vehicles Law. It very inconvenient for ordinal drivers to pay attentions on the rogue that run about at over limited speed and in unreadable reckless driving.
I dare say to my son, "You may do that as you like, so far as you drive specific car for the purpose without license plate only in the closed circuit. So you need carrier car for transporting light weighted racing car. No confusing with the ordinal automobile on the public roads. No confusion nor compromising is allowed on earth!"
Probably he would not understand my intention about my opinions, because he has only eyes for Mazda Roadstar roof opened car.

But now is the worst opportunity to buy new car also second handed one, because the production lines in the every factory stops now lacking the parts of semiconductors.
Stopping new cars supply lead to reduction of second handed old cars automatically,so the automobile market is now in the storm.
Now is the most inconvenient opportunity to buy automobiles.

The unconnected wiring on ignition plus to trans-axle direction imbedding some fuse case was the back-up light circuitry, it proved last night in the garage. The connection was cut when the ignition coil was repositioned on the original place, because of lack of the wire length, it was ignored for long time.
But,following Traffic Law and Road Transportation Law,necessary wiring must be connected if my Beetle runs without any problem.

HDD replacement

HDD in Sotec former generation note PC was replaced, because PC refrains from performing very often unintentionally. Initial version of XP Home edition was used for operation system, then critical problem on Internet Explorer 6 occurred,impossible to version up to 7,8 to 9?
Service pack 2 was installed this morning by way of Web site, see what will happen this evening?

Any unreliable machinery and devices are not acceptable for my own ones.

The performance of them depend on the correct,precise,adequate a firm adjustment technologies.

So,the periodical replacement parts may be changed after some enough time interval of using.

80G bites HDD with old connection cost below 5,000yen, now is the time for expensive Solid State Drive datum storage system.

VW 1302 Super Beetle needs a bit more adjusting interval on Solex 34PICT3 carburetor.
Lubrication on clutch pedal construction and fucked portion is required,because I feel some slipping resistance when I step onto the clutch pedal. The cap must be removed for accel wire adjustment and the point must be checked by finger touching for lubrication.
Precise adjustment was performed on automatic choke butterfly position again,because the degree of closing of butterfly affects the idling rotation of first idle control.


I found out in the Web site that a piece of bulb and solid state diode are utilized in the fuel gauge voltage stabilizer inside of later VW Beetle, though the case are the similar with old one.
So my idea to use low drop type 3pins regulator is not always a wrong choice for the stable voltage on fuel gauge in the cluster.

Actuator modification



An old style Japanese genuine auto parts obtained in YaHoo auction at 990yen, vacuum ignition timing advancer for Nissan Z series motor.
This alive diaphragm actuator is utilized for an another purpose, building in the VW 1302 Super Beetle's distributor for the same timing advancing activation.
The purpose and the actions are the same on the mechanical distributor, but the mounting method onto the distributor case are different each other,so some modification with aligning the active stroke and position.
After positioning this Nissan vacuum actuator on VW Beetle's distributor, this device would thoroughly covered with original bigger actuator case pretending the original condition without modification.
I'll be sure to report on this interesting modification onto my Beetle.

Ashiya Symphony Orchestra

The 75th regular concert was held at Nishinomiya KOBELCO Hall last evening by Ashiya Symphony Orchestra.
Before beginning the program yesterday,appendix had been added putting the devout intentions of requiem for over 30,000 victims in the Great East Earthquake.
They played perfect the longer program,symphony No.6 in a minor "Tragische" with no mistakes.
I thought that there must be not a little struggle to fit changing performance tunings of stringed instruments on the way because the song was filled with all climax of Fortissimo.
Any way the audience must have gone home with satisfactory with the sophisticated concert.

Precise adjustment?

Deeper consideration on choke valve setting led me to some conclusion that the initial closest position caused over closing as to produce slipping resistance at stepping cam portion. So adjusting back the choke butterfly as to just a little bit opened position would solve the problem happened the day before yesterday, starting with difficulty may be because of over choking.
Though the motor stopping disappeared because of lack of warming up interval, muddling when first idle on starting phase occurred instead.
Reporting later on this:

A Garage Jack and Kayaba Scissors Jack were repaired this before noon, ATF was added to the former and complete disassembling and a pressure O-ring(8-10 square) replacement were performed.
For relatively long time interval the tasks were ignored and threw away pretending unknown.
Replacement of knuckle ball joint on both sides on VW 1302 Super Beetle and rear trailing arm outer hinge bushes inner and outer are waiting for me, today's working would contribute to the future heavy workings.

Replaced 4 shock absorbers on VW Beetle have been getting accustomed to daily uses, though I felt too heavy and tight at the begining. On the other hand, lower arm bushes on central hinge position may be too soft and movable for the heavy duty position. Replacement of this rubber bushes into pillow ball joint may improve the steering stability.

I drove BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model this morning to buy some bread down to the bakery for a few kilometers far, just I felt that all the setting on balance are successfully performed.
Axle construction is thoroughly replaced into Impreza GC8 WRC Turbo model's one including bushes, motor's capacity is enough for ordinal uses,for body weight 1390kg/2,200cc.
Especially on the steering constructive compliances I did pay attention and made desperate efforts, steering rack mounts etc.

Though I had much complaints on NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz 1,300cc RS model especially on the too much deformable compliance bushes on axle arms F/R, but now I recommend it as such kind of setting may exist to obtain more comforts like upper models. I have become feel more like this after VW Beetle workings.

Again I wanna say, "Automobile is on every balance".

Next to 1302

Consultation on the electric fuel pump application to a carburetor automobile as an alternative of a mechanical diaphragm pump was performed today by chance.
Just he said, "Better the mechanical one, because the pressure alignments must be established between the needle valve pressure in carburetor and electric fuel pump, this is not an easy task for a layman nor an outsider.The engineers in the factory of researching division are just doing this job and sampling the datum as their own occupations.
Now I'm at a loss how to do on this fuel supplying problem?

I dropped in Schelms VW shop at Ibaraki City Osaka to see the T3 Karmann Gear. Listening to the problem she has interrupted me from going ahead, the pressure leak only while cold starting stage but the phenomena gets better after warming up solving the problem would be performed if the motor with twin carburetor should be unburdened.
Relatively better conditioned but I'll fold the gambling game this time though this kind of opportunity never turns around me in future?

Fuel pressure?


I've some suspicion on the diaphragm mechanical fuel pump on VW 1302 Super Beetle, because the the fuel filter in a transparent plastic case shows the unstable fuel supply to carburetor, sometime filled with fuel and another time empty inside?
Unstable idling may be caused by the unstable fuel pressure by the Brazil made diaphragm pump?

Judging from the Web site information, Mitsuba 0,2cc/sec electric pump for carburetor model may be suitable for VW 1,600cc AD OHV motor.
As a countermeasure for fuel supply I would try this in future.
This kind of pump should not be mounted in the engine room but outside because of the heat.

Not a little attempts are left on my VW Beetle before giving to my son.

More manitenance required

The chair cover of driver's seat in '71 VW 1302 Super Beetle is partially broken, some special technology must be required to repair like new, a black silicon sealing material for a motor maintenance is prepared and black rubber grue is obtained already.

I had some strange trouble to start motor last night hating to start and some cylinder was missing at the beginning, I doubt some missing firing? Check it out including distributor!
Remember that the throttle butterfly idling position was changed as a prior adjustment on the day before yesterday.

The time is come to decide the style and design on my own business, because those of competitors has become clear yesterday.
Our business working place would be designed in completely different on the other end.

Gagaku & Gigaku




Thanks to the contributions of many officials, we could enjoy a fantastic and wonderful evening yesterday.
For the stage about the story of Genjousanzou priest,a famous actor,Mr,Takaaki Enoki was invited this year, also famous in the field of pale water drawing.

Many of performers were the students of Tenri University and the ancient back music was played by Gagaku division of Tenri University.
They all well contributed to revive the ancient stages,Gigaku so much.

And all the stage clothes are created referring to ancient Treasury holdings, also the manufacturing methods of textiles are hand making including strings staining materials technology were followed with ancient ones, exception was the one stage,first time this year, reddish and shinny armor weapons.

The representative of the ancient string staining technical engineering technology was Mr. Yoshioka from Kyoto factory, being the legacy following the representative of old Japanese fencing school Yoshioka Dojo in Kyoto that had been destroyed by the historically famous swordsman Mr. Musashi Miyamoto.

Japanese ancient dance & stage



I had never been there but for the invitation from the specialist in ancient textile craft,at Yakusihiji in Nara prefecture, meaning Pharmacist's Temple founded 1300years ago.

Addition on 34PICT3

The key to good adjustment of Solex 34PICT3 carburetor is to decide the throttle butterfly initial position, because the idle speed is adjusted not by throttle position but by bypass air control screw. The throttle position is fixed at adequate position on any later adjustment.
But remember here the throttle position must be so correctly to activate only one idling spray nozzle and the latter two nozzles must be activated one after another, these transient process produces smooth rotational rising.
At the same time opening bypass screw must affect on the idle speed with increasing speed.
Unfortunately the description on this important fact is not found in the information in the Web sites, the smog phenomena in 34PICT3 carburetor would be almost removed considerably though the fundamental setting, leaner mixture, tendency remains.
Breath coughing, hesitating and stumbling would thoroughly disappear as to no complains,so far as the vacuum ignition advancer is equipped and it works properly.

Mechanical carburetors adjustment tips

Mechanical carburetor tuning tips is to know the mixture now is rich, lean or adequate.
The better way is to supply additional air flow in the mixture, look, discern and feel the rotation would gain or loose. The retarding vacuum nipple on Solex 34PICT3 is fixed at the position between throttle butterfly and intake valve, it convenient to give additional air as an experiment.
On the other hand, giving additional fuel often causes plug smoldering state and the firing sometimes becomes unstable with no relation with later adjustment, loosing sweetest points.
Overheating and plug smoldering make the carburetor adjustment difficult basically.
So, firing condition in every cylinder must be kept clean and adequately cool while the adjustment procedure.

WEBER mechanical side draft 40DCOM is different, looks one piece but the throttle butterflies are double, so the butterflies are set on every cylinder promptly.
On this type of carburetor also the key to the fine adjustment is nothing but the idle adjust screw setting. Because the idle setting affects middle and high rotations definitely.
After closed throttle butterfly setting so firmly as to even suction vacuum pressures being same value, the throttle is opened to rotate the motor using only with middle speed nozzle without idle spray, all the idle adjust screws are closed keeping the motor rotation over 2000rpm.
Then the only one idle adjust screw is opened gradually till it gains rotation a little, this very beginning position of the idle adjusting screw is marked.
This marking would be the key to success in the adjustment.
After closing finished cylinder,same procedures are repeated one by one as to the number of cylinders.
If the idle screws are set at the decided position, idling would be so stable as to pass the legal Exhaust Emission inspection though the values are very near to the limited ones,CO 4.5% and HC 1300ppm.
The best mixtures would be obtained if very very slightly opened from the marked position.

Solex 34PICT3 adjusted

VW 1302 Super Beetle's carburetor Solex 34PICT3 was re-set from the first step,though the legal inspection has passed on exhaust gas checking, later precise checking revealed the perforations on vacuum actuator diaphragm for ignition timing both advancing and retarding.

The perforation on retarding diaphragm means the vacuum leak leading to leaner fuel mixture, so air volume control adjust screw was loosened counter-clockwise 5/8 rotational turning logically,now the nipple for retarding is closed.

Closing unreasonably and unintentionally opened air way has gotten back the originally richer mixture condition.
Also throttle butterfly closest position was re-set as standard one.
Motor stopping habit in the condition of first idle disappeared after carburetor setting.

Throttle stopper positioner, air volume control screw and bypass screw were all moved considerably with no relations with original positions.

I re-recognized the fact that the idling stability affects not only on idling but also all the rotational circumstances.

Application of wall paper on additionally insulated firewall of VW1302 Super Beetle has improved the scenery in the room mirror.


33333km has appeared in the single meter cluster of my Super Beetle today.

Low dropout reguletor



Deeper consideration about 3pins regulator got me out recognizing the low voltage drop type semiconductor,

7812 requires 2,5V difference at the least, otherwise the ripple remains on the output. I must refer to the output voltage after the original regulator.

LM2940CT12 National Semiconductor's element requiring bipolar 0,22 micro Farads and monopolar 47 micro Farads. Additional experiment would performed in very near future.

I feel the greatest joy when I could adjust the internal combustion engine at the ultimate performance condition by my desperate efforts, this tendency has not been changed since my childhood.

The VW AD 1600cc OHV motor is getting well at an accelerated rate these days by precise adjusting air volume adjuster.
The burning condition is discerned by the smell of exhaust gas quite accurately.

Finding out the traces of dripping at the corner of frontal window screen, I knew that the roof leak from sealed rubber exists not only at rear window portion but also frontal one.
The countermeasure on this problem must be taken.

'71 VW 1302 Super Beetle at my hand is getting accustomed to daily use recently by my DIY improved maintenance.

Voltage vibrator

The semiconductor 3pins regulator 7812 produced 11,85V with stability in 13,75V circuitry. So stable voltage must be supplied in fuel gauge circuitry on VW 1302 Super Beetle, now drifting 2mm on stylus tip continuously controlled by primitive mechanical vibrator equipped bi-metal and heater construction 40 years ago.

The nowadays semiconductor and some capacitors has smaller balk enough to be set in ancient voltage regulator case with pretending old parts but inside existing semiconductor with good performance to drive the primitive fuel gauge.


Additional application of rubber sheet on fire wall of my Beetle eliminated irritation noise thoroughly, but another problem occurred, the gear noise from trans-axle is heard clearly instead.
The fact that the elimination of engine noise brought up new noise which was masked by engine noise passing through the fire wall.

The floor must be covered fully in addition to shut out the trans-axle noise,as a countermeasure.
Destruction of maker fixed NVH balance is apparent on earth.

We call this kind phenomena,"Mogura tataki", meaning hitting head of a mole one after another unlimitedly.

Nipponbashi Osaka

Residual tasks would be digested today on VW1302 Super Beetle, rear window sealing between grass and rubber seal,as some experimental trial, replacing original mechanical voltage regulator fixed on the speedometer into 3 pins regulator(semiconductor 7812 12V1A),because the mechanical vibrator with bi-metal causes drifting of fuel gauge stylus.
Now residual fuel amount is not shown precisely on the fuel meter,so more stable voltage stability is required if the meter construction is so primitive as child's toys.

Visiting Nipponbashi in Southern Osaka, I found the great changing in the scenery, very few people were there and Silicon House Store were disappeared, Sengoku Denshou from Tokyo Akihabara appeared instead.
The reduction of customers must be brought by the changing of recent shopping style into Web dealings.
