Lavor

Main muffler replacement is the task today, heavy, dusty and risky jobs mainly because of the possibility of stuck bolts dent breaking in the cylinder head exhaust ports.

No way to escape now the problem would not solved until overcoming this barrier. This is the first and prior task to be performed before the shock absorber replacements on my VW 1302 Super Beetle.

The extent of damage has became clear recently both on Japan country knocked down by the Quake and on My Beetle with too much aged 40 years conditioned.

From Israel

Israel Medical Rescue Team with 60 members arrived at Sendai Miyagi in Japan, of course they are recommended as Japanese Licensed Doctors if they had not pass Japanese examinations for Japanese Doctor course.

This arrangement by Japanese government is the most unlike one, we did exceptional decision on this problem, of course we know the level of doctor education is the highest as US in Israel, Japanese Government often insisted on the point of Japanese Doctor License systems whenever external assists were served by foreign countries.

The exceptional and unlike decision this time by Japanese Government has something to do with the affair 60 years ago, on a Japanese Diplomat Mr.Chiune Sugihara in Lithuania at that time who saved hundreds of Jewish peoples escaped from Nazi to emigrate by way of Japan to another countries, now the descendant of them are thousand of Jewish.

But Mr. Sugihara was regarded as a treason after that because he produced visas for escaping Jewish peoples in spite of Negative Order by Japanese Government at that time with the alliance with Nazi Germany. He was isolated in Japan and passed away lonely.

As time passes, a half century later the descendant of Mr. Chiune Sugihara was invited to Israel to be praised and awards because of the humanly courageous attitudes with disobeying the orders of Japanese Government, of course the stigma of traitor was wiped out and the Rehabilitation was obtained.

Muscle functions

Deeper consideration on my back muscles led me to some conclusion that the stiffness of muscles are caused by the situation of keeping the same position for long time with concentration.

The muscles tension are in the tendency of lack of cell sap supply.
Basically the business for muscles are to shrink to perform working, so the situation keeping contracted figure so long time as to loosing the normal cell sap circulation.
In order to recover this inconvenient situation the muscles must be contracted intentionally however pain may be caused in the way.

The recovery of fundamental liquid circulation is once started, we will soon feel some itching sensation on the portion, this is caused by the change of biochemical compositions in body cell sap, Adenosin Phosphate and Lactic Acid.

Also the joint dysfunctions are mainly caused by the continuous shrinking power of muscle spasm, on neck ,back and low back.

Remember that mechanical rough vibrations easily causes the ruptures of peripheral vascular so the muscles should be treated gently parallel to the muscle functional direction and above all the contractions is the best way to recover the original power that is superior to any of the external stimulation.

Anxiety

I've some anxiety on exhaust header pipe replacement on VW 1302 Super Beetle, because some of bolts and nuts may stick dependent on thermal cycle on cylinder head for these 40 years.
Stud bolt defect may be very troublesome on earth in aluminum alloy cylinder material, how shall I remove the broken bolt from the head? Rusting and sticking are the main problem for the next task.
Replacement bolts and nuts are already prepared of course, but I don't know how to remove a broken inside bolt?
This barrier must be overcome at any rate no matter how I may refuse to do that. Immediately after running may be the better because of the differences of thermal expansion ratio.
Because of dusty powder and the anxiety above, I'm now in some hesitations.

Turn signal switch

As I mentioned yesterday main muffler replacement is necessary at any rate, additionally signal auto-return mechanical construction is out of order because of spring retainer pin defect, new parts is in Web site at 19,800 yen too expensive?

Valve clearance

Almost of 16 valves in VW AD motor were pushing too much except one of them. The thickness gauge was used 10s years later since SUBARU Impreza GF6 1800cc Flat4 motor adjustment.

As the result of setting at standard value,0,150mm, all the motor performances were far improved as usual, with louder exhaust sound, finding out the rusted cracks on the main muffler at the specific portion of muffler cutter supports on both side and soldering on the right stay was separated.
New muffler parts are obtained already including gaskets, so dusty working is waiting in very near future.

The steering performances without power assist and manual trans-axle requires adequate energy and concentrations while driving, I took a nap after 4 hours driving today.

Low back pain

About 10 years have passed since manual trans-axle automobile, Talbot PEUGEOT 205 Rallye, had thrown away.
Now new comer but older than 205 remembered me of the critical disadvantage on manual trans-axle automobile for me, "low back pain" caused by clutch pedal operations being never tried for over 10 years.
The change of lever ratio in clutch linkage of VW1302 Super Beetle would solve this kind of problem and this phenomena is mainly because of aged body, realizing me of my body condition, I'm not so young as before.

The valve clearance(in AD motor) adjustment would performed remembering the standard value, 0,150 mm. The pick up of acceleration and smoothness would be progressed as usual,also idling stability.

Memorandum

Before the important information is lost as a trifle old memory about the application of Teflon micro powder to the power steering oil pressure line, things important must be described as a memorandum, all favorable results were obtained on four vehicles.

First of all steering stability was increased while straight running.
Reactions became quick by the force applied by the driver on the steering.

Astringency on steering reactions considerably improved comparing before Teflon application.

The 4 tires positions are clearly perceived in increased accuracy.

The lack of adequate wheel adjustment is perceived clearly in very precise level.

The friction loss in the rack & pinion steering construction including vane pump has a great possibility to affect the perceivable steering reactions by the driver.

Even the friction would affect on steering responses, this fact was the most recent experimental result for these 5 years.

Trifle thing like remembering these kind of physical properties would not be trifle if piled, this was taught by Professor P.K.Thomas in UCLA 40 years ago.

For tomorrow

Four of one or two cylinder may not burn well and the fact would cause the slightly rough idling rotation?
Plug Code pulling off procedure one by one would specify the misfiring cylinder number?
But take good care of high voltage attack once I experienced few days ago on this VW 1302 Super Beetle.

Without cutting corners I must check all the platinum plugs and also valve clearances, remember the value, 0,150mm in and out are the same promptly.

In the mountains

I happen to come across a restaurant in the mountains at Mousi Sanda-city in the middle of Hyogo-prefecture. A talkative and good-natured assistant was inside.

Peeping in a pond in the garden there were some bird repellent for carps with various colors. Later explanation revealed the bird to be repelled are Egrets.

Some retired old man are opening private garden to the public, worth visiting, she said.

I'm sure you'll not come out from the restaurant with stomach full and disappointed, not because of the tastes of the dishes but because of her sensible talks.

Contaminations

We have no way to find out effective means for the contaminations by radioactive materials, out of human 5 senses, smelling,tasting,seeing, hearing and touching.
Special devices are only in the very special researching institutes or labolatories.

Once we had miserable experiences of Radio Material Contamination, Atomic bombs attack in Hiroshima and Nagasaki by US Army 60 years ago, now we have experienced the third contamination, as proverb says,"What happened twice may happens three times".

How about deserting all the Nuclear Energy at least in Japan by compensating the lack of Electric Power Supply by means of "Saving" as we are performing now?

However hard we may make researches on the Nuclear Energy, unsurpassed barrier exists with human's capability.
Now is the time to consider about this problem?

Planning changed

The planning that replacing shock absorbers and finishing VW today was postponed for my habitual escaping.

Just checking the amount of transaxle oil and 1,5L more added, making mistake that oil pilling from nozzle tip was regarded as overflowing. Because of layman as first task sometimes this kind of trifle but negligible mistaking happens.

Sticky shift feel was far improved as to feel some comfort in actual shifting situations.
The test driving in the mountains in VW 1302 Super Beetle made me feel some anxiety on an unpredictable trouble, nothing wrong happened today.

The functions on automatic choke module has recovered by adjusting the tightening force onto the carburator upper body.

Teflon powder applications were performed on SXE10 TOYOTA Altezza for motor oil and power steering oil. Every reaction from YAMAHA 3SGE motor far improved as usual and the centric feeling on the steering became clear while straight running.
This automobile may continue all through my life, so I think.

End of campaign


As the automatic choke module holding screws were loosened and re-tightened last night with the trial of reduction of slipping resistance on the centric shaft, rechecking on this point is performed this morning again.

Main task today is the replacements of shock absorbers on 4 axle constructions, and frontal lower arm inner bush which outer race was cracked intentionally for the sake of momental convenience.

The precise scaling and adjusting on the axle constructive geometry and wheel alignment would be performed later, becaue the task is my only one remained on this Beetle.

I'm going to carry out the restore task on VW 1302 Super Beetle today taking almost half a year of time interval.

Old stories

The dysfunction of automatic choke system because of my fault that I applied additional tightening procedures realized me of the necessity on richer mixture at firs idle stage. A mechanical carburator like 34PICT3 could show this fundamental physical phenomena that has been unnoticed for long time because of recent sophisticated computer fuel control systems.
Simply tightening screws adjusting would solb this kind of problem, sticky rotating shaft, displacement of centric position.
This adjustment would performed prior to the first idle starting tomorrow.

The reason why I select the old VW as my restoring hobby is the ample parts supply of periodical replacement parts in the world. 99% of parts are available in the Web site even in Japan.
The engine and drive train F/F,F/R and AWD I have already now and the only construction R/R didn't I have.
Additionally I experienced to have driven 50,000km in my young period and wanted I try younger age again now 40 years later, despite of my own principle that "Never the same car again".

Some imaginations occured in my mind about the IRS outer bushes on VW 1302 Super Beetle. How about applications of self centering bearings, because the arm movement hing lines inner and outer are not parallel each other and the holes on outer bushes are distorted from the begining.
I'm sure that the useful way was found out for self centering special designed bearing I'm keeping now, if the inner size is adequate for application, the matching must be ascertained.
Unreliable strange steering reaction in the very begining stage, there exist some silent phaze, I feel it very unpleasant on earth, just the same reaction as the recent automobile with to much compliance were applied on rear constructive design by means of cracked suspension hinge bushes.

The danger of Nuclear Energy had been pointed out by Bernard Russel and Albert Einstein in the declaration in 1955.

Belief




Automatic choke system of VW 1302 Super Beetle failed to activate on 34PICT3 carburator yesterday, the system was working well until I apply additional tightening on three screws holding choke module onto carb body. So loosening screws must be inevitable though the tightening torque adjustments needs precisions.
The special device applied for Anti-pollution regulation at '78 made of small plastic case with orifice prevent the smooth accelaration, of course that's the purpose,producing vaccum leakage, naturally removed finally.

About the brake system on Super Beetle, though I imagined to exchange from drum to disk rotor sooner or later, the image was changed, braking power is enough as it is, unnecessary to convert into disk brake system, just the difference of braking transient. And the front drum brake size is increased on Super Beetle including master cylinder size.
As my conclusion, brake system on VW 1302 Super Beetle would not be exchanged into disk brake system in future, going as it is.

Young man like my son has tendency to choose and to pay attention on the best and highest model in any machinery, especially in automobile.
He must know the difference between demand and necessity.

Is it so useless as to be utilized as civilian service vehicle?
I feel some sadness just to be used as bulldozer at Fukushima Nuclear Electric Power Plant that has dusty because of explosions.
How about another adequate machinery except 74 Tank?

Affair today

Unnecessarily longer center plug code was adjusted adequately by shortening the length on VW 1302 Super Beetle.
Checking #4 plug yesterday proved that all the plugs were replaced with Bosch Plutinum Plugs, probably the difficulty of plug replacing procedure obliged the former user to choose the expensive choice.

While test driving in VW to West Sanda area I happend to come across to the situation of traffic accident at cross section, head to head collision. Probably driver's lives were not lost, so I hope.

Tasks continuation

I have still a lot of to do on my VW 1302 Super Beetle though the Legal License Plate had been obtained already on last Thursday.

Too long old center plug code would be shortened to the adequate length.

Lateral resistive strength on axle constructions would be checked especially on IRS outer rubber bushes and on front lower arm bushes.
The steering reaction has some dead zone in centric position, rear lateral strength of axle constructions has much to do with these kind of geeky reactions.

Future improvement on this point by precise inspections would recover the defects, this is the reason why I never throw this machinery and the gradual improvement is best enjoying to restore these kind of old automobile.

Also as described below, improvement in compliances are necessary.
The noise invasion is apparent from the rear part of rear seat, the cause of this phenomena must be the setting the cooler condensor on the portion by making big hole there.

Some trial application of noise sealing material, a piece of sponge and soft rubber would prove the reason. The tire noise from the ground comes into the cabin relatively easily now.

The possibility is not denied to remove all the air conditioning device, compressor, condensor, switches and evaporator. The body weight mainly rear axle one would be reduced about 20kg at least.

In addition to Japanese Earthquake, miserable news comes out on CNN today.

Refining Beetle



Actual road test proved the most adequate ignition timing is ATDC 2,5 degree in the condition wearing special diaphragm with both functions with retard and proceed.

High tention plug codes were replaced on 4 cylinders except center code lacking the enough length. The ignition coil being modified onto right side positon of the fan should, so relatively long center code is required for my 1302 Beetle.
For emergency the silicon tube was utilized on center code for enhancing the capability on shortening circuitry protection.

The dashpot system prevented me from approaching to the bypass adjusting screw on 34PICT3 carburetor, so the system device was removed for the conveniences.

Mechanical treatments are waiting after electricity,F/R shock absorber replacements on 4 positions.

Very rare and useful radio was obtained in YaHoo auction at 400 yen. The additional functions are as a cup holder and clock.
Shall I put this in the Beetle?

Taking my time for 2 days

Today's tasks on VW 1302 Super Beetle are followings:
Replacement of high tention codes.
The criminal of the sudden silence of AD motor was some leaking of high voltage plug center code.
Idle speed setting by closing bypass screw on 34PICT3 carb. As the improvement of electric supply on the plugs, all the performances on AD motor far improve including the idle speed, that was so increased about 300rpm.
Relatively dull reactions before have changed into smart ones by this electric current improvement as to gloat myself for the remarkable changes.

Remembering two days before yesterday the date of Legal Inspection for New License, I returned home by way of Mt.Rokkou to Tkarazuka in the snow falling, then after arriving at my working pit the phenomena, no motor starting occured.
Now I diagnose it as the snow water had been come inside around the high tention code!

Fuel vent hoses must be rechecked, though strange smell has been disappered.

Now, I'm experiencing some incredible early failure on Super Beetle after 40 years later from the production in Germany, probably the engineers who constructed this in VW factory may not be there now?

Strange phenomena this time immediately after obtaining new license has something to do with the departed sprits of EP82 TOYOTA Starlet, that had been supported me over 10 years not only technically but also emotionally and deserted ruthlessly instead of New commer VW Beetle.

Out of prognostication



The reason of sudden stopping yesterday was high tension code leakage mainly went to the wiring on automatic choke.

Keeping a distance avoiding leakage from another wiring the high voltage code could flow enough current to spark plugs.
Finding out that the pushing spring inserted between rotor center touching contactor and distributor cap center were lost and the the contactor was fixed in the deeper part of the cap center. The rotor center was stained with black sludge throughly. As a natural reaction, some adequate coil spring was applied and the rotor center was polished.

This discription is based on the fact that the AD motor response remarkably improved like different one so smooth like not OHV motor. And the idling RPM probably exceeds 1300 rpm after the adequate high tention code arrangement. So idle speed must be reduced by adjusting bypass screw on 34PICT3 carburetor. All the performances of AD motor were far improved by this treatment.

Though new parts, Gold LUCAS ignition coil and a capacitor were prepared, they were not necessary on earth, also old SAAB ignition coil was wired as an experiment, proving as good enough to be utilized for a spare parts.
Anyway my lovely VW 1302 could start to move again tonight, my working pit is now clear for OPEL B-Vectra's servicing tomorrow.

Ignition coil?


Ancient ignition circuitry is reconfirmed like time slipping into 40 years ago.

The possibility of the capacitor shortening is not denied,because the phenomena would cause the elimination of the contact point functions leading to no secondary voltage reproductions.
0,22μ farad polar capacitor is available in my jank box and also BOSCH ignition coil for old SAAB is at my hand, for point contact & braking or for transistor is not sure but actual digital scaling would reveal the truth immediately, in case the first coil resistor value is below 1 Ω, additional cement resistor would be applied, not so difficult task.

I hope the sitting VW 1302 with no motor function would move today, otherwise the waiting works cannot be started, replacement of the secondary air supply hose to control valve on XH200 OPEL B-Vectra,distorted by the heat from exhaust manihold.

Successfully finished




Successfully new desired number plate was obtained yesterday without delays except speedometer scaling process, forgetting the principle to keep the speed at 40km/h for a while and passing, I was in impatient condition a bit.

I just determined to desert EP82 TOYOTA Starlet, 10 years intimate servant for me, in spite of no wrong parts are found in her.
The reason why I release her is just a reduction of automobiles I'm keeping now, 7 in total.
Robert room mirror, H4 valves,jack,Radio,Naldi steering and boss,hones,fuel pomp,capacitors,hand tools and lower arm bar must be removed befor deserting her.
Obtaining parking place again revive my healthy car life again with new commer VW 1302 Super Beetle.

Legal treatment was more troublesome on resigning EP82 Starlet than VW Beetle, because the plate was "Naniwa" and the treatment must be done at Naniwa Land Transportation Office basically. But I did it Hyogo Office because of changing residences.

Though I returned home happy to my working pit in snowy atmospheric condition, VW with new license plate refused to start it's engine suddenly after few hours stop.
Some choking and priming of fuel exhausted gasoline smell, but any first explosion was discerned, ignition relay act when key is at the position.

My diagnosis come to a conclusion that the cause of fatal disorder was not a fuel but electricty for ignitions, so the criminal of this affair must be the "Ignition Coil" leakage or shortening.
More precise inspection would be performed on coming Saturday and Sunday.

My intimate friend at Kanagawa pref. informed me of the sudden cutting of electric supply last night, many a resident were complaining because it happened without any notice. Probably some datum must be lost in the PC HDD by the unpredictable accident.
How is the phenomena in the condition of loosing Electricity for habitual peoples?
Almost of our daily lives are supported with the electric powers, even shaving in the morning?

The Japanes symbol must have moved to some safety zone, Kyoto, Izumo or Kyusyu?

Better escape immediately now from dangerous Kanto areas as soon as possible, because the information in TV and Radio broadcasting are not always reliable even in NHK, they must avoid Public Panic!
Take care of Radiation exposed materials including food!

No cooling way including ECCS!

Don't try to attract the public attentions to you, it's not the time, that was not place and before those you are not the person.

Distorted informations

We need the truth and the fact, no need for false informations distorted by government.
We don't desire to appear on TV just layman like Mr.Edano nor Mr.Kan, but the representative of technical engineer working there, wounded Nuclear power plant at Fukushima.

Radiation on Genome DNA

Genome DNA is relatively easily destroyed continuously by several factors, ionizing radiation, ROS and DNA replication error. This kind of error affects on the maintenance and of genetic informations not a little. So the errors must be immediately repaired and reconstructed correctly, because the body cells shall continue supporting our lives.

Sealing rubber like deformable material must have hardened because of long time interval 40 years period, leading to the lack of rebound capability to seal the oil pilling.
Anyway the frontal cartridges on both side including rear shock absorbers would be replaced without any hesitation.

Oil pilling

Careful inspection on the origin of oil pilling revealed the criminal was not new wheel cylinder but the piston rod oil seal in right strut shock absorber.
The replacement of the cartridge would be performed after the Legal Inspection on Thursday.
All the shock absorbers including rear ones would be replaced at the same time.
Today's tasks were digested throughly including two portions of split pins undone were set firmly, they were stabilizer and lower arm locking crown nuts.
Strange brake pedal reaction pointed out by Netz TOYOTA factory corrected into normal touching by adjusting shoe clearances, 8 portions in total, every adjusting stage pedal pumping was effective to set the shoes in correct position.
Gray colored anti rusting spray painting was performed on a partial body and some parts of under constructions.
Lead battery replaced from 70D23L to genuine European standard one for fixing on lower parts.
Ignition timing was rechecked resulting unnecessarily correct, also cam and lifter lubrication in good condition.

What must be done today

Preparing for the Legal Inspection to obtain license plate on coming Thursday, residual tasks must be performed at any rate today.

Battery replacement and fixation in regular manner.
Locking nuts replacements on the tie rod end inner ball joints on both side.
Brake shoe adjustments.
Check clogging on the fuel filter just the first stage from the fuel tank.

Heater valve control lever too loose.

Hard time started

Kansai Electric Power Company mailed me asking saving power, because some of the power should be supplied to Northern portions instead of Kanto Electric Power Company.
People should do something for the victims this time without any arguments, who have survived the disaster cannot be selfish on earth.
The time is come to consider much more deeply what is important to do.

3 tasks tomorrow

Today I did evaporator piping in earnest resulting favourable. Complecated and strange evaporator system was throughly removed and renewaled with new pipe parts. Strong smell of fuel completely disappeared.
Brake shoes clearances would be adjusted to attain comfortable brake pedal touching reactions. Now just assembled and no adjusting condition not so good though braking power is enough on the checking device.
Two ball joint holding nuts would be replaced as designed.
Fuel filter condition just under the fuel tank, rusting powder may have fulfilled the filter mesh.

!!Core Melt!!

The words "Core Melt" immediately reminds me of Chernobyl Meltdown miserable accident in Soviet Union 45 years ago, 500 times destructive explosion of Hiroshima Atomic Bomb,"Little Boy".
Governments have some tendency to sum up the extent of damage too small, how about Japanese one?
By the way the energy efficiency of Nuclear power plant is only 30%, too low comparing with thermal power generation with 50%. Throwing the hot water after use into the sea to activate the steam turbine generator, this fact is nothing but the global warming, no?

NE Pacific Earthquake JP


Norse-Eastern Pacific Earthquake occured yesterday in Japan, biggest disaster since Meiji period, over a thousand people went away already, it's too bad on earth!
We have really realized that the day same as good yesterday would not always come also today.
We have realized also the powerfulness just in front of a Natural Disasters!
The return of Japanese economic activity would take time for the time being.

Catastrophe at Sendai pref.



The catastrophe occurred at Sendai off coast earthquake. All the traffics are out of control even in the air 700 flights were cancelled.
The influences caused by Tsunami have been aired in TV, all channels were occupied by the earth quake news. Probably hundreds of people must have been killed by various accidents.
The nuclear Fukui generator residents have been calls for evacuations.
Anyway Japan main land is in confused condition, this is not a training but an actual disaster!
All the traffics are out of order mainly because of cutting of electric supply.
The magnitude this time was corrected from 8,4 to 8,8 on earth, this is the biggest earthquake since the recording had started in Meiji period.

Carburetor adjustment


I was prepared for the treatment of Solex 34PICT3 carburator, studied hard I how to adjust and establish the ultimate condition to pass the legal inspection, limited datum are CO 4,5% and HC 1200ppm.
According to my harder experience on WEBER side draft 40 DCOM twin carburator equipped in PEUGEOT Talbot 205 Rallye, adjusting band was very shallow and difficult to find out the sweetest points of idling screw position. But I did it by myself and brought the 205 Rallye to the not private but public legal inspection line to Neyagawa Osaka.
So the same kind of difficulties were supposed before the actual adjustment utilizing special checking device at the factory.
The thickness of idle stopper is 0,40mm, 2plus 1/2 open as the original setting position of volume control screw and the bypass screw is the only controller of odling speed not the throttle valve on 34PICT3 type being different from another former types.
But the first scaling procedure proved that the carburetor setting was correct enough to pass the examinations with rooms.
The fact that no adjusting was required on the Beetle disappointed me not a little, because the carburetor adjusting procedure was cancelled.

Evaporator


We are having warm and fine weather condition this week end in Osaka Japan.
The fuel pipe lines for fuel evaporation control must be precisely checked on VW 1302 Super Beetle, because some strange smell suffers the passengers in the cabin. As the time when the fuel supply was in rear engine room temporary treatment for the convenience, no smell was discerned, the origin of the smelling must be some portion of evaporation piping?
I've some suspicion of clogging of air discharge pipes.
Now I have experienced an unexpected stumbling that has nothing to do with fundament automobile's performances, going, turning and stopping.

Did it well


Strong smell of fuel in the cabin made me nervous this morning, the climinal of the affair was the loss of filler cap sealing rubber.
Just a little bit smelling remains, so tubing must be checked in very near future, the cause of bad smell must be pointed out clearly.
Sunvisor holders were set firmly at their correct position and the position of sunvisor body was adjusted by moving them axially, laterally. the position of the sunvisor is relatively easily moved, no movement stopper were not inside, so designed on US after parts.
The exhaust gas of VW 1302 Super Beetle was checked in the TOYOTA dealer's factory, 0.04% CO and 600ppm HC were the datum by the checker, the inspection next week would be cleared with room.
Light directions were not acceptable.
Brake power check was no problem except the pedal touching feel. The reason is that no brake shoe adjustment were performed after the shoe replacement prcedures.
Now I have enough confidence to pass the legal inspections for license plates next week at Ohgi in Kobe.
About the temporary license plate bollowed at at Ward office, once returned and bollow again for extention of expiration date.
40 years old Beetle would revive like a phoenix in a week!
The cold weather today brought snow fall, it was the last cold wave in this winter.
With temporary number plates, it can go on the public road without any hesitations. It took me almost half a year with desperate efforts.
Additional replacement parts for Beetle arrived, CV joint boots is the main order.
Special tool for loosening transaxle drain plug was effective today. Oil was replaced and Teflon powder added together.

Final adjustment

The noise and the vibration of air cooled old VW Beetle awakens my five senses comfortably.
The emission control of exhaust gas would be checked in TOYOTA dealer's factory, because the special device is required to check and carburator Solex 34PICT3.
Head light direction, brake effectiveness, frontal side slip, hone and window washer function, etc..

On public road

Drove I my almost finished VW 1302 Super Beetle about 10km distance wearing temporary license plates.
Many fond memories came out of my mind, living with 1200cc yellow standard Beetle when I was young around 20 years old, riving echoes the five senses of myself.
Air cooled Beetle has such kind of fascinations to move over 60s.
1600cc motor on this 870kg body weight is not in good balanced, just over-powered. 1200cc like standard model seems to be an adequate power, high power is not always a virtue.

Phosphor vs LED



The printed circuitry plate shows some powder like material?
The reason of no putting on of this lamp is the explosion of lighting tube, fatal defecting phenomena occurred in the Neoball lamp.
Is it true to be Neo?
But now, even uptodate this kind of phospho tube small light is down to date, now is the time for much more less current consuming LED light.
So, phosphor type small lamp is discounted at half prices.

Temporary license plate


VW 1302 Super Beetle can be moved on public reads now, because the temporary license plates were obtained before long.
Though it came to my working pit on the truck back, finally it can move by itself, turn and stop also.
I feel so happy because the six months extended comprehension on 40 years Beetle has come to fruition at last!

Comes back

SXE-10 TOYOTA Altezza is one of the my automobile that was presented to my wife for the sake of the fixation on my son's medical course 7 years ago. But only 15,000km riding shows the auto was not used so effectively.
My eldest son would come back to Jp from US Ca. this end of March with his family and no possibility to work abroad again. They will need some automobile immediately to carry children.
As he had left BLE SUBARU 3L sedan for my 3rd son when he started to US 3 years ago, he may take my Altezza instead, the production periods are almost the same 7 years ago.
She would agree my suggestion and she would use Vitz NCP-10 instead, far easier maneuverability for town use for her.

What next?


What'll be the next after the completion of VW Super Beetle? Though there were several complication while restoring this 40 years old automobile, the procurements and the workings on repairing were relatively smooth for a half a year.
I hope no more servant on an automobile maintenance from now, because I did almost all what I want to do on an automobile.
Then what will be the next from now?

Before poring fuel into fuel tank in VW 1302 Super Beetle, the pipe and the tank inlet must be sealed with genuine sealing rubber by disassembling the construction. The parts looks so tirfle not as to affect anything, but fuel pilling on connecting portion would invite uncomfortable smelling in the cabin in actual use.
Negotiation with the TOYOTA engineer on the locking nuts of steering linkage, new ball joint has no holes for stopper crucked pins.
34PICT3 carburator setting for exhaust gas control is the prior purpose of the manintenance on Thursday.
Temporary license plate would be obtained today at Ward office.

Stamp


This is not a forgery to make stamp for official sheet but just followings to the conventions.
This kind of stamp is often used to finish official sheets in Japan instead of individual signeture in a Western style.

Make a piece of acrylic resin.
Write upside down.
Rough graving.
Finishing with black surface.

Finishing stage

As a public process for new license plate on VW 1302 Super Beetle, official certificate paper, garage application form would be server to police. The desired license plat is already obtained and reserved in the Hyogo branch of Society of Motor Vehicles Osaka.
After wearing temporary license plate the vehicle would be brought to Netz TOYOTA to adjust mainly on emission control, the SOLEX 34PICT3 carburator must be adjusted at prescribed value, CO below 4,5% HC 1200ppm on comming Thursday.
According to the expiration date of the temporary license plate, test driving would be performed on Saturday and on Sunday.

Gradually

The D-day is comming across to me, my first experience to obtain automobile license plate by myself.
The fuel line under the body from fuel tank to carburetor was firmly fixed yesterday on VW 1302 Super Beetle, utilizing the bolts washers to combine body with axle beam. Also compulsory liability insurance for 25 months has processed.
Then next step is submitting the garage proving sheets to the police.
On Wednesday the application for temporary license plate would be performed.

As I was an applicant for the Desired Number Plate system before noon today, so received I good information by Society of Motor Vehicles of OSAKA, just reserved the number "13-02", of course for my VW 1302 Super Beetle. Additional payment for the convenience fee would be 4,100yen.
10 days later my Super Beetle would wear the proud number plate "13-02".

Final preparation

Final preparation would be performed today on VW 1302 Super Beetle.
Two crown nuts used for temporary setting on tie rod inner ball joints must be replaced into nylon lock nuts on both sides.
The fuel filter that's set nearest on fuel tank must be repositioned adequately.
Copper alternative fuel line must be supported at least on 3 positon applying some metal stopper and rubber cushions.
For 25 months compulsory automobile liability insurance is necessary prior to temporary lince plate application.
Anyway it's very troublesome to drive an automobile without regular license plate on the public road.

Strobe timing test

Though I'm not sure because of old story on spare parts thyristor a few years ago, I must have prepared spare one at that time.
However hard I might look it for, I couldn't find it out today.
I tried to make strobe timing light for checking it on EP82 TOYOTA Starlet, distributor of it is adjustable and replaced into EP91's one.
But the DIY timing checker did not work well at that time, more adjusting was necessary.
Later timing checking using strobe timing light, no further adjusting was necessary. My testing way not using electric device but using my own 5 senses with actual road running test made it unnecessary to do.

Effort for half a year


5 months have passed since '71 VW 1302 Super Beetle arrived at my pit from Wakayma city. Every Thursday, Saturday afternoon and Sunday have been spent or the restoring work time, a long way for me as a first experience.
Though it had run only 30,000km for 40 years, tremendous repairing procedures were required, especially on brake system, axle constructions and steering linkage ball joints replacement, also on horn and head lights.
In another words, I could enjoy spending time for restoring as long as almost half a year.
The legal license plate would be obtained in the middle of this month for this Super Beetle.
Planning are followings:
On 8th March some official sheets would server to the police station for provine garage.
On 9th March temporary license plate would be obtained for checking using special tools in Netz TOYOTA on 10th March.
On 13th March test driving would be performed if the expiration date are available.
On 14th March Garage proof official sheet would recieved. Temp plate returned.
On 15th March temporary license plate would obtained again to bring Beetle to Land Transportation Office in Hyogo for Legal Inspection on 17th Thursday, the license plate would be obtained finally at that time.
On 18th March temporary license plate returned to Ward office.
Then all the procedures to obtain license plate for Beetle are over.

Parts replacement


Hood seals for front & for rear were replaced relatively easily.
Problem is Sun visors, the luck of inside pin length makes it impossible to replace into new Sun Visor parts. The length of the catcher of inner pin end may be much longer if the plastic parts were replaced at the same time?

Equipments


Wind washer was established stupidly by primitive method with purely mechanical device shown in the photo. Spray nozzle is connected with general washer solvent case equipped hand pressure pomp inside of glove box.
Funny way to spray on the wind screen is available for Legal Inspection on acquiring the license plate.

Tightening on steering member bolts were performed yesterday, finding out no loosening.

Because of it's name "Grage Vice", I bought it at 5,000yen. The advantage is that the three ways of uses are available, clumping pipe, ordinal vice and special anvil behind.
17mm opposing sides long nut is utilized as socket wrench divice for trans-axle oil servicing plug removing procedures.

Kayaba Scissors Jack was fully disassembled because of pressure leakage. Some special know-how exist for pressure O-shape rubber ring applications.

Chilly this morning

So cold this morning outside like it's in the middle of the Winter.
The connecting hose will be replaced between the control valve and the secondary air supply blower for antipollution emission control in XH200W Opel B-Vectra. This task for today is relatively troublesome, because the heavy lead battery must be unburdened for establishing working space.
Trial fitting of the plastic solvent case with handle lever into the pressure line of window washer line is the task today also on VW Beetle. This is the indispensable system for overcoming Legal Inspection.
Saying about window washer, right side nozzle is out of order on EP82 TOYOTA Starlet, check it also.
After some rainy days, brake disk plates must be rusted if they were kept outside, basically the rust must be removed before it comes deep inside of the disk plate surface. And the relatively tight spaces between the disk plate and brake pads, it very convenient for iron material to change the property into the rusted condition in the air, from Iron to Iron oxide, more stable chemical property.
The photo shown later are trial fitting automatic wrench with 17mm long nut, pressure case with activating lever for window washer and disassembled oil jacks for restoring.

Stiffness

Tomorrow the task for the first time, tightening the Torx T30 & T40 on B-Vectra , steering cross member. Additional tightening procedure would persuades the astringency of steering reaction, for sure! Also affects on the reaction of turning and stopping motions.
Regaining lost physical property as explained stiffness would make far progress after tightening very important bolts.
I'm looking forward to the results after the procedures.

Tube amplifier

Today I've mastered to make a piece of image from some several images, in another words to combine together in a image.
The photo shows WE349A single amplifier(Stereo) driven by 6SN7 SRPP system with no negative feedback.
Adjusting devices were presented by my intimate friend who had been a professional electric engineer of the big Japanese Electric company.
I'm almost satisfied with this sound.

Final stage of restoration


Window washer nozzle pressure is supplied by spare tire's one on VW Beetle, so pressure control valve is equipped in the switch on dash board. The adequate function would be lost already 40 years after the production. Then some modification like applying motor pump for the window washer may be necessary.
The function checking would be performed tomorrow.
Also rear splash guard position must be adjusted equivalently on both sides.
The official documents proving garage must be prepared.
Provisional application number plate is also necessary.

The long nut in the photo is prepared for special purpose, the length of across flats is 17mm. Yes, for the replacement of transaxle oil. The filling cap nut has Hex 17mm concave head. With combination use 17mm socket wrench the tool would perform the physical property.

Special O-ring parts for repairing oil jacks, KAYABA Scissors Jack and 1,5 Garage Jack. Both of them are out of order because of oil pressure leakage.
Both of them need complete disassembling to ascertain the functions of in and out oil flow on control valves, dust or sludge clumping.
