Junk device

Junk strobe scope obtained few days ago for ignition timing checking was proved to be a truely junk, does not work well. Disassembling the device, some booster circuitry and trigger circuitry exist and latter one is the equivalent of thyristor with PNP and NPN Tr..

I hope the replacement of trigger into much more sophisticated one(SCR) would recover the originally designed performance as strobe timing checker.

Anyway the future is not so dark and narrow.

Umbones

An umbo is very dangerous in case of unexpected accident.

So, anything sharp and the materials harder than human body should not be positioned just in front of the driver and the navigater in the automobile.

From the upper concept standing point of view, the optional parts, for example, an under tray fixed under the handle shaft of the VW Beetle is convenient but very dangerous in case of traffic accident on the other hand, especially leading to some knee injury.

The same is said on additional switches positioned on just under the meter craster, parking sw, rear defogger sw and road spot light and fog lamp sw, probably they were added after production at dealer's service factory.

I'm going to move those switches from the original portion to dash board between the switches for head light and for window wiper.

Meter illumination?

Inspections this afternoon proved the fuse to have been destroyed was alive on VW 1302 Super Beetle. Most right sided white one in the fuse box.

The reason why meter craster was not the fuse breaking but the darkest illumination control, that is a rotating rheostat embedded in the main righting switch.

Now only one servicing point is wind washer system, being left undone. Yes, tasks for tomorrow would be the wind washer and strobe ignition timing light checking.

The total distance meter is not adjusted from the beginning, 31,221km is the truth.

New parking place from coming April is reserved today, all the payments were finished. It will be very near from new working place, within 10metes.

Modifications?

Modifications on automobile by the users seldom invites better result than undone. Any genuine parts for the specific automobile is firmly quality controlled by the constructors.

Any rooms are not left to modify in order to make it better on performances, in short any models are so designed to make best balance as it is.

Only spotting on some specific point, changing some parts with different physical property would surely destroy the mechanical balance.

Any parts replacements sould be performed with the factory genuine same parts for servicing.

The intentions of the car designer must be best admired.

Then what can an user do on the automobile? What kind of modification is allowed to do?

As a conclusion, no parts and no way exists for ordinal user, except the adjustments for correction of precise constructive geometry and wheel alignment resetting.

For the upper working, the precisions must proceed that of factory constructions, if complicated and very difficult setting procedures would be privately performed.

Anyway it took me over ten years to do that effectively, as for me, a technical engineer in one of a different scientific field.

Strobe

Ignition timing light device has been obtained finding out to be a NOS(New Old Stock). Then how old is this American device, the switch to change voltages 6V and 12 insists the birthday was around 1970, for example VW Beetle produced prior to 1967 they had 6V lead battey.

High voltage by miswiring would do harm to the circuitry inside, so written on the caution lavel.

I hope this device would work well without any restoring troubles.

Teflon powder

Micro grain Teflon powder Microflon-2 was applied on 4 engines and power steering pressure lines yesterday.

Remarkable improvements were recomended promptly, became smooth,being in less mechanical noises, powerful and satable.

Remembering 40 years ago, there was same kind of additives, Microron and Flonteer etc. Now the Teflon power material reminds me of good, young and cheerful days.

Incredibly used I Mosquito coil yesterday while I was working under the automobiles. Sudden and unseasonable warmth invited pupal eclosions of mosquito?

Residual tasks for VW 1302 Super Beetle are wind washer, fuse replacement broken by my miswiring, remember the control is minus on old Beetle.

I would try to have a temporal license to bring my Beetle to Netz TOYOTA for servicing on head light directions, brake effect checking, side slip test and emission gas checking, CO below 4,5%, HC 1500ppm.

I'm at a loss how to do on setting the day at the same time, Legal Inspection Test day and the upper preliminary inspection in TOYOTA.

Fuel tank removed

Fuel tank was removed at last on VW 1302 Super Beetle to ascertain the steering universal joint boots upper & lower. Repairing program were performed as mentioned before. Rusted fuel tank was lucker painted in black color and fixed firmly as it was and several vent hoses were connected promptly without failures.

I might have shortened fuel gage circuitry by mistake, meter craster illumination does not turn on if head light was put on. Fuse replacements must be required anyway.

Timing light

Timing light for ignition timing checking is obtained through YaHoo auction as shown in the photo at 1,000 yen junk. New but so old enough not to prove correct function, but no problem remained as I have a confidence to restore it.

Though paied already and the baggage will arrive at Osaka tomorrow before noon, it would be received the after tomorrow, my working place would be closed as a regular holiday.

Mainly used this on VW 1302 Super Beetle maintenance and for EP82 distributer setting once.

The power supply is not from dry cell battery but from lead car battery 12V for strobo sparkling with enough lighting power.

I would enjoy setting ignition timing and knowing the relations with motor performances with much deeper understandings. This kind of way to enjoy is not capable on recent designed automobiles, because the ignition timing is precisely controled by ECU according to the programmed map.

This kind of enjoyable playing on different ignition timings is the preferential rights only for the old automobiles equipped with the distributer and point system.

Middle-East?

Unstable arabic countries may cause some armed conflicts in middle-East areas? Iranian warship has already arrived at Mediterranean sea through Suez Canal, as a reaction of Israel military power also started high speed warship also. What has become of them from now?

Microflon-2

Drivers foot control system on VW 1302 Super Beetle are so designed as to simplify the necessary constructions for space-saving. All of the axis of three pedal are the same position three dimensionally, accel, brake and clutch pedals .Broken brake master cylinder does harm to the surounding areas.

Even now the genuine VW parts are available, ATE brake master ｃylinder and operative wheel cylinders.

But right handled steering gear box is not available, so the defect of this parts means the end of the car life. This is why I put an emphasis on the treatment of the gear oil inside. As previously mentioned, I dare insist on applying the Tefron powder inside together. Photo shows the special material obtained today, Micronflon-2.

Skymark & A380

Skymark Air Lines are introducing next strategy, Air Bus A-380/800 for 800 passengers with two-story cabin.

I saw some movie about that and found it's main wing was distorted because of it's size and weight in gull shape on the ground. Lufthanza mark was drawn on the yaw motion stabilizer.

Probably the principle must be kept even on this kind of big commercial aircraft, distortions are allowed but twisting is unacceptable on main wing construction.

Though gull shaped on the ground as it is, straight span shape would be formed adequately in the air.

Foot mark

Found I some foot marks by Tomy on cam cover in NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz, also strong smell of cat's peeing, he must have used this small space as his own comfortable private sleeping bed. I have ever heard about the involved cat in rib belt circulating naturally fatal.

Probablly this kind of mechanical space must be recomended as a convenient place for hidden shelter for a cat. Any bad marks, for example biting or cutting wiring were not to be seen.

About the Pli-Carbonate head light transparent cover, 10 years interval makes some foggy change on the surface because of the Sun light, Ultraviolet.

Ernst Leitz GmbH

Cutting out some favorite part of the scenery is one of my hobby for long time since silver salt generation.

Half a century ago, there were world wide famous small camera company named Ernst Leitz GmbH. Their lens design were superb and excellent in comparison with another company's ones. The designs were based on "Kante Theory", cutting sharpness of the overlap portion on the three dimensional images.

The lens design concept of Ernst Leitz GmbH was completely different from another companies.

Now I'm working on Vario-Ermarit lens 45 years later since my good old time with sweet and gem memories.

Black walls in Nagahama

Cultural heritages for sight seeing buses are not the place to visit for me, because almost of such kind of place are already destroyed and devastated by many steps of tourists. Actually good and old things never exist there but another place.

Judging from such standing point of view, the recommendation by the organization as World Heritage is not always so convenient for ordinal persons except just for sight seeing tourists.

Heritages

Highly promoted historical place for tourists is no worth visiting, so I felt in Nagahama Siga Pref. yesterday. We make it a rule to feel the advantage of ancient historical place in some inconvenience.

On the other hand too much goods and food are sold for tourer's convenience in sophistication for sight seeing place, Nagahama has changed into the modified and promoted place. This is also said about Yufuin in Kyusyu, I was so disappointed to visit there far from Kansai area. Leave the historical heritages untouched unnecessarily.

Anyway I found it difficult to find out anything old there.

Bombai Exhibition

The main purpose of our three families there were not sight seeing at Nagahama but the Plums cultivated on a small tray, called "Bombai" in Japan and the event was held by Nagahama city every year.

Finding out ancient and oldest station house that's made of wood.

Was that an only myself who felt uncomfortable with some mixtures of old and new artistic materials in Nagahama city?

Promotion?

Too much touristy place is not always interesting to visit, so I felt yesterday at Nagahama, Norse Eastern side of Biwa Lake.

Too much artificially modified sceneries of the old lasting city were not acceptable as historic ones.

Exactly the same was said at Yufuin in Kyushu.

Too much promotions for tourists by destroying original and natural scenery of the ancient town is one of a frivolous action attempting of immediate taking money, because once destroｙed old matter would never be reconstructed again.

Restoring final stage

Probably the basic construction of fuel gage is not changed even now as shown in the photo, so to speak heater and bimetal combination structure. Simple construction means the room for any private adjustment as a self preference.

More investigations must be performed to know the original hose connection on fuel tank under the front bonnet of VW 1302 Super Beetle. Because the tank was replace by the Iron Head Co. situated in Wakayama pref. Chikukou City and only the outlet fuel hose only was connected, another ones were kept open unconnected.

Now I'm looking for the Web sites to show about correct connections on fuel tank, also the innate way of thinking of complicated and difficult to understand, factory hose connections.

Also, air cleaner construction and the basic way of design must be found out and understood.

Lead car battery

Lead battery's life in my son's went away? Only 3 years, too short? According to my perceptions on battery in automobile are around 5 years. Additional charging and continuous checking of gravity of the electrolyte is required to continue it so long. His car must consume more wattage than normal SUBARU BLE model, because additional electric devices must have been equipped.

The less electric devices except head lights, wiper, heater and horn, the better for automobile lead battery, if the maintenances and develops were performed enough.

Station deveopment

I was standing on the plathome at Hankyu Tsukaguchi Station around 6 o'clock this morning, and the specific and stimulating smell of the after firing reminded me of the affair there before dawn middle of the night the day before yesterday.

Even 24 hours later after firing strong and nose stimulating smell remained there.

Then after burned out throughly there, all the complicated negotiations on transferring for the Station Development evictions disappeared and flown away.

This is the best news for the business owner if the firing was not caused intentionally?

This afternoon

When I do it is this afternoon to remove the empty fuel tank from VW 1302 Super Beetle, intending to check the functions on steering universal joint equipped under the tank and to apply new boots on the joints.

Ball recircuｌating steering worm gear system would be checke at the same time and the oil inside would be replaced into 85W-90 hypoide gear oil that's same as manual transaxle gear box oil. And with the hope to continue it's life so long, some Teflon material would be added together with oil.

Right handled 1302 Super Beetle would finish it's life when steering gear box might go away, so said in VW world, because the parts are not available any more.

Performance

Round trip to Kyoto Higashiyam by BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model proved how perfectly the automobile had been restored on earth. For these two weeks, the trip is the third one yesterday, Volvo S40, Altezza TOYOTA and BC7 of three automobiles had similar steering reactions in spite of the difference on drive trains, FF, FR and 4WD. Especially, 20 years old BC7 Legacy showed good performances with the age of 20. Displacement of 2,2L is the adequate setting on 1,400kg body weight.

The family of relative may come back to OSAKA from US, not a little possibity exists to use 4 door sedan, Altezza as their family car from now?

Fire

Fire broke out in the middle of the night this morning at Hankyu Tsukaguchi Station, situated at Northern portion of the rail way, The Tsukaguchi Central Market burned throughly. Fortunately nobody injured and 20 neighbors are safe.

Though the fire had been put under contorol after an hour, Kobe line and Itami line were stopped until 7:15 in the morning, so the influence made me go to the working place by automobile. Why this morning on windy day, fire broke out?

Universal joint

Removing the fuel tank from the regular installation position, the condition of steering universal joint would be revealed clearly, exiting clicking noises somewhere in the linkage. Finding out any damage in universal joint bearings, parts order may be necessary in some situations. The work on the boots replacement there is indispensable, because the best opportunity is time when the fuel tank is removed.

The operation would shift to the adjustments of 11AD 1580cc motor after the works on fuel line and steering linkage completion.

Around the middle date of next month should be the D-day for the legal inspection.

Memorandum

”It's important to set the valves, points, timing and check the choke (in this order) before setting the carburetor, they all work together for a smooth running engine.”, so written in the web site for the adjustment of Solex 34 PICT3 carburator on VW 1302 Super Beetle.

Thickness on throttle valve positioner screw and lowest step of the auto choke system is 0,003inch feeler gage and screw in 1/2 turn resulting 0,004 opening throttle valve, fixed idle throttle position never to be touched whatever may happen.

Never move the fixed throttle positioner screw as idle speed control as mentioned above, it's the task for volume screw and bypass screw.

Initial opening on bypass screw is adjusted on 850-900 rpm.

Initial opening on volume screw smaller than bypass screw is 2 plus 1/2 and adjust range is plus minus 1/2 turn.

And meaning volume is air mass, so closing the volume screw invites richer mixture condition.

Any adjustment on carburator must be performed while engine is warm and hot enough keeping idle speed at 850-900 rpm.

Too slow idling invites overheating.

Idling ignition timing is at ATDC 5 degree.

Plug gap is 0,70mm.

In and out valve clearances are all 0,15mm.

Rubber materials

On the stage of actual constructive geometry correction and wheel alignment adjustment indispensable matter to be overcome exist.

Deeper understandings on rubber materials equipped in axle construction including tires guide us to the conlusion that they are the Pandra's box, though all of them are applied for the purpose of compliance and buffer structure.

Remember the physical properties that rubber materials have are not so easy to control, they are viscoelasticity, displacements, deformations, deviations and the most pesky one hysteresis.

So all the time while scaling and adjusting of the field works, remember the upper properties and try to avoid any influences by them. Just scaling and adjusting are not enough but opening and releasing internal stresses are the essentials.

Rubber is so mischievous material to make us nervous enough.

Equinoctial week

I'm planning the date of legal inspection for VW 1302 Super Beetle apply licensure should be after the 15th March, because of cold and changable climate condition,as proverb says on Higan spring Equinoctial week.

So about one month interval is left from now to complete it, steering backlashes, fuel line, head light directions and exhaust gas checking, carbon-oxide below 4,5% and Hydrocarbon limited at 1,500ppm.

I've already permissions to use special devices for upper procedures in the factory, Nets TOYOTA.

Bonnet and rear gate rubber sealer parts have already arrived, also sun visors, side glass regulator, trans-axle oil 80W-90 replacement requiring 17mm Hex wrench and so on.

Judging from my experience on VW Beetle at that time about 40 years ago, the clutch facing would last more 20,000km use because it would so designed to go about 50,000km in total.

Increased in number?

Why 40 years old car now?

My young and good days come back again?

I've started the reconstruction of '72 VW 1302 Super Beetle under the concept above. But 40 years interval after the production requires tremendous efforts that's unexplainable. About 4 and a half months have passed since it came to my pit, not yet completed.

The main parts, brake, steering, tires, suspensions, engine and lights are fine but small parts needs more time interval to be finished.

I'm looking forward to drive ancient VW Beetle in the Spring Breeze with some sophisticated lady on the navigator's seat.

Endlessly

To tell the truth the replacement of impacted grease in DOJ of NCP10 TOYOTA Vistz was shoddy working, performing without removing drive shaft from the train.

The reason was that the knuckle parts was changed into new design and the change of shape on separator tool was required, because of too narrow space to insert the conventional ST I have. So the outer boot was moved inside just loosening bands, removed innate too soft grease with air pressure gun, applied #2 Chrome Molybdenum grease with finger pressure.

With all such kind of Amateur working, strange noise was eliminated throughly.

Thanks to helpfull recall information that the defective part is only DOJ, inner joint DIJ is not touched.

I've obtained the important information about Dash-Cross　Member on XH200W Opel B-Vectra, retightening is necessary and the remarkable improvements would be desired in body strength. 4 cap screws must be tightened from lateral direction on A pillar both sides. I'm looking forward the results.

Joint noise disappeared

The DOJ grease was replaced from #1 into #2, both of them are Chrome Molybdenum included on NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz front drive shaft outer joint.

My imagination was to the point and small but strange clicking noise was throughly disappeared on both sides while steering full turning.

Simply the lack of viscoelasticity of impacted joint grease caused primitive problem.

Now, this automobile has obtained perfect performance at all.

This one would continue it's life at least more 10 years and more 100,000kmm.

Gramophone vs HDD

I do not find out any differences in the construction between the ancient Gramophone and the Hard Disk Drive in the personal computer, meaning the similarity the way to invite signals from the disket though the difference on the signal pick up may exist.

The fundamental way of thinking is not changed even after a century has passed already, if the technology is far advanced now.

No body argues on the unbaranced situations that the mechanical artifact, premitive elements are present in the sofisticated electric circuitry like PC?

Then when is the time to prevail Solid State Drive so fluently?
