Postponed VW1302 work

Stuck and clogged Hex bolts connecting with drive shaft and stub shaft on the rear axle of air-cooled VW 1302 Super Beetle prevented me from proceeding to the procedure of replacing hub bearings yesterday, any Hex wrenches were unacceptable because of sticking power, also Vice Grip tool. Though streaking to utilize the Nut cracker special tool for the purpose shown in the picture, probably makes it  effective to loosen them, but,I determined to postpone this heavy work until the clutch disk replacement would be required, 10,000 km more. The strange note must be caused not by the rear hub bearings but by the differential side angular roller bearing on the left side. Drive pinion and crown gear touching surface relation must be adjusted by inserting adequate thickness adjusting sim insertion, as a matter of fact. As the following procedure, unburdening AD motor, trans-axle body and almost of full restoring of them should be done at that time. This is the reason why I gave up yesterday, the biggest operation those are not popular among Laymen nor Sunday mechanics, hobby player like myself, but I have enough brave and strong intention to do that by myself.

Error correction & measure

Any error correction or measure should be done immediately after being found, no waiting, no postponing are allowed, otherwise, it might be left undone until more miserable disaster would happen in future, however trifle it might be!
Now, long hesitating heavy and dusty work would begin this afternoon, that is the rear hub bearing replacement on air-cooled VW 1302 Super Beetle. Asking about this procedure that looks difficult to TOKYO My Bows shop, he said it is not difficult and possible, additionally he said, the replacement hub bearing brand had been changed from foreign one HUG into Japanese NTN because of some reason. As my keeping parts are HUG, I'll go with these then in case of any trouble, I'll do the same with NSK bearings that my favorite.
Checking from the out side, no ugly over heating and overflowing of impact grease leak phenomena there were observed, anyway, disassembling this afternoon would clear the problem.

YS regulator & Pegasus



Rookie 20 flight yesterday gave me much information about the introduction of YS fuel pressure injection system to OS 32FS motor, as a matter of fact, original 3H carburetor was replaced into 4H that has some different fuel narrow down control spray nozzle, not needle but a triangular slit. Of course, the original angular shape was modified to adopt with higher fuel pressure condition with YS system. Comparing with the narrower slit in YS45FR motor, the shape was re-modified and this experimental trial was to the point, not hesitation, no tendency of coughing was observed while the test flight instead smooth transition from slow to middle and to hi was obtained. Rookie 20 trainer shoulder wing plane would have finished as a motor test bench as actual flight use and the motor would be replaced into regular one 25FSR on the other hand, 32 motor would be burdened on TETRA Spitfire Mk5B 50 4cycle scale plane as a stable and good conditioned power plant, because I have a intention to take part in 4C Scale model competition in future.
I found out the cause of right side twisting bad habit of YOSHIOKA Pegasus 40 while looping, the parallelism between the main wing and stabilizer is not established, both of the main wing are set with some slight right side inclination! This discrepancy would be corrected by grinding the holes on the fuselage for connecting center aluminum alloy pipe. The holes would be reformed by self curing resin material. As this plane was given to me for free of charge including servos, a FM receiver and OS 40LA motor, I have no way to complaint on this discrepancy, the critical one, twisted right main wing had been corrected before. Probably, the effort to have given program mixing condition yesterday would be in vain by the correction of main wing setting condition onto the fuselage.

VW 1302 Super Beetle operation

All of the parts and special tools have prepared for replacing rear hub bearings in air-cooled VW 1302 Super Beetle now! As I have never experienced the procedure like this, I am excited a little. Tightened front hub bearings contributed to obtain more stable steering action while straight running on the highway. Additional maintenance on rear hub bearings would show more stable and astringent steering reaction on ordinary and high way, it's original condition would re-obtained. This relatively heavy work would be performed on next holiday.

Su-31 40 Measure for F3A

Excluding the flutter phenomena on stabilizer end and rudder tip, the construction there were re-made intentionally. Originally, Kyosho Sukhoi Su-31 40 ARF kit was so designed to enjoy slow speed flight 3D maneuver, the speed flight often invited while F3A maneuver is not the purpose, all the moving wings, aileron, rudder and elevator occupy relatively larger area than F3A. This difference of concept has fundamental design concept, so, some re-making is required for preventing the fatal results. Following this principle, all the tail moving wings were done on Su-31 before the first rolling out. Probably, increasing main wing span 10cm and extension of tail moment arm 10cm, and remaking tail moving wings would adopt on to F3A pattern use, these modified are all based on my own experiences for more than half a century with the number of ever lost airplanes number summing up 200. The 40 years old motor YS 60 SR motor would suit with this new model especially while straight rising up maneuver.
Reinforcement on the horn setting area also are indispensable requirement that should be done at any rate, any weak point on the movable wings while maneuver also the item not to be forgotten, pieces of thin plywood would be inserted between horn bases and attaching surfaces keeping the physical property of Redundant system. Realized disadvantage caused by lack of consideration should be measured urgently however difficult it may be. Remember that, "Piled trifles are not trifle, but great." 

VW1302 Rear hub bearing

Careful checking on hub bearings prepared previously for air-cooled VW 1302 Super Beetle founds out some problem as the fundamental problem, yes too much backlash between inner and outer races. They are made in India with FAG brand, the clearance of manufacturing is unfavorable. I have another idea that the outer hub bearings would be re-ordered in Japanese brand NSK(Nippon Seiko Co.), the price of them are not unacceptable, otherwise I might replace the newly introduced India made ones into Japanese ones finally? Bearing inner race puller ST would arrive in a few days, so, heavy work on my Super Beetle would begin very soon! As described upper, I have determined to replace rear hub bearings on both side prior to that of differential

Slight beat note from Differential gear on VW1302

Air-cooled VW 1302 Super Beetle belongs to me has a critical problem on differential gear left side supporting bearing, though the symptom had been recognized when the procedure of trailing arm hinge bushes had been replaced. I was pretending as if I didn't recognized at that time, because the cause of slight rasping feeling was not determined whether hub bearing or differential side bearing when left side wheel were rotated by human arm intentionally. The beat note discerned while straight running on the highway has been increased these days, probably because the fitting on the drive pinion gear and the ring gear has lost with bad relationship between them, probably so to speak "Heel fitting condition", the left side bearing wear must be occurred inconveniently. Just replacing the side bearings on both side would not solve this problem thoroughly but following procedure would be taken along together at the same time, a very complicated and troublesome procedure, yes, fitting adjusting procedure to establish good fitting between pinion and ring gears in the differential gear box, otherwise, some strange noise would be carried out after assembling under difficult condition? The noise from the portion is not less so, a heavy duty task would be performed in very near future, a pair of rear hub bearings on both side are prepared already, additional order for diff. side bearing would be done ASAP. Otherwise, some hard metal dust from the broken bearing would do terrible harm on the trans-axle gear surfaces.

Miscellaneous thought these days

Because of active specific seasonal rainy front, it would rain heavily today and tomorrow, so, not suitable for Model airplane flight, most of my free time would be spent for building the next fighters, Sukhoi Su-31 and Astral XX by Mr.Naruke those are well prepared almost ready to fly. Both of them would be burdened YS 2 cycle motor, YS 60SR and YS 45 promptly.

In order to establish the straight rolling axis in any phase like a tight string, inverted, 90 degree rising up and down, 45 degree up and down etc., rolling axis and gravity center should be the same, otherwise, the axis would be bent and turned screw if there might some degree of magnitude, resulting barrel rolling. From the standing point of the theory, trainer model with not a little Dihedral is not a most unlikely subject for F3A maneuver flight. Rookie 20 as a datum sampling object is used as a trial experimental purpose, aileron differential setting, also elevator differential(mechanical construction by offset of elevator horns), Knife-Edge flight with rudder to aileron and to elevator, mechanical motor side thrust setting, etc.

As I would often bring only trainer airplane like Rookie with unstable motor condition to the new flying place as a new comer, I should be taken and be regarded as an only layman and quite a beginner, it's convenient for me to be done so rather than a skillful expert F3A competition flyer. But, someone might have been realized my capability, because I started the another one's OS 33GT gasoline motor that could not be obtained the first combustion, immediately after my throttle action, while starting phase, after taking more than 15 minutes for ignition, my piled experiences in this field for more than a half of a century made it possible?

Studied much yesterday

Rookie 20 flight adjusting trials for as long as 6 hours yesterday from early in the morning taught me much about the principle of basic flight characteristics.
Too much application of motor drive axis to the right direction causes an unexpected shift of the direction especially in the phase of the followings of a rising up rolling maneuver like the secondary acting 45 degree rise up on cornet with half role. Deeper consideration led me to the conclusion that the thrust axis of the motor has caused the result, also the fact was proved while Knife Edge flight setting. Left side KE is easy and floats enough even with small original rudder area pulling up to the sky direction by the motor thrust, on the other hand, right side one could float and was difficult to keep the horizontal flight pulling down force of right side motor thrust, the result was supposed to be mainly caused by the inequality of the motor thrust.

The method of setting two elevator servos are worth introducing because of the reason not only for elevator looping action but also for propeller slipstream, the effect is not always influenced only on vertical stabilizer but on horizontal stabilizer. So, the Programmable capability with 6 ways equipped in FUTABA 10J 2,4 GHz transmitter is utilized for the purpose promptly, remembering that the 2 of 6 are already occupied by the Knife Edge flight setting, rudder to aileron and rudder to elevator. With all the programs, Knife Edge straight flight is possible with all the primitive trainer model Rookie 20 for beginners and layman. Depending on the establishment of critical program adjustment, F3A P15 maneuver is possible?

The capability to see, to watch, to gaze at it and to recognize is necessary to correct and to adjust the bad habits of the flight. To recognize means there exists the way to do that. "The flight is everything in F3A Competition", so said by the former World Champ, Mr. Y. Akiba. I didn't know the true meaning 30 years ago when I was in a precious circumstance to fly F3A model together with him at the same flying place. But, now I can remember his saying and follow it, though it was 30 years ago, the principles of Science is the same.

The needle valve one notch is very sensitive under the condition of YS fuel pressure system, and this dull shaped(original for natural aspiration) tip of the needle valve makes it difficult to establish some fixed and stable condition of fuel supply on OS 32 F motor, lowest rotation and closed throttle valve condition and also middle speed transition to hi rotation, the balancing of diaphragm pressure regulator adjustment is very difficult, I dare do it until the success to be satisfied performance of throttle works, a half a year has passed insisting on this system? One by one, my understandings on YS regulator system proceeds, too long period of time of lowest rotation operation causes motor stop, because of the reduction of pressure in the fuel tank, but this phenomena has nothing to do with the actual maneuver flight.

Utilizing the established YS manufactured motor and establish it's condition is relatively easy for me, of course I know that the technology had been done by the special engineer, Mr. Kondou with his desperate efforts of development and research factory in Nagoya who is famous for his highest capability as a YS Doctor, but with another company's motors with YS system are difficult, this is why no F3A flyer does not invite OS 160 FX motor, 2 cycle and simplest construction with enough power for F3A maneuver competition. But, I dare do that depending on my selfish feelings on YS pressure regulator system for as long as a half a century.
Anyway, keeping some machinery and doing the best condition is difficult and time consuming work in my life, on the other hand, just feel and express in some way without any actual action, like poet might be a easiest lives?

Measures

Wounded baby sparrow kept in my closed garage since yesterday because of some head hitting accident has taken off vigorously this morning. I hope it would live long in future. Even a wild small bird, it is nothing but a precious life defined by God.

Some convenient material supply by K-Factory in Tokyo made it possible to reinforce the main wing central part, where the most important for any airplanes because the part is the very specific point to be bent and screwed while playing maneuver. 2 players were applied on Sukhoi Su-31. Waiting overnight, the impregnate material of Polyester became hardened enough to proceed to the next step.

I just remembered yesterday at flying port in Kizu some very important observation while the flight of Gold-Wing MXS-R 30cc acro B type model, "Flutter Phenomena" on elevator while straight speed flight! Of course I know that is the critically destructive strong power to destroy the airplane in pieces! I wanna put some hypothesis on this problem that it might be brought by a special design of the elevator construction to reduce the load on the elevator servos. So, I must press my head to reconstruct all of the elevators originally designed as a 3D acrobatic use, because I'm going to utilize them for not 3D but for F3A pattern maneuver competition. Anyway, I had a very good opportunity to check and see actually what will happen if the slow 3D acro model were obliged to do at higher speed. Anyway, it was a very good day to obtain much information to proceed to constructions of my F3A model airplanes in future.

Gold-Wing 3D acro MXS-R flight

I saw Gold-Wing MXS-R 30cc acrobatic model fly at our home ground Iga-Ueno model plane port, it was the first flight for it and helped I the pilot to start OS 33cc gas motor because he was at a loss for loosing the first combustion. Just a throttle opening a half was enough to the fuel came into the passenger port of the disk rotary valve when the starter motor was operated. The character of MXS-R was stable on rolling direction but not for pitching direction because of shorter tail moment arm, so designed to make acrobatic flight. As a matter of fact, my forecast that the lack of tail length makes it difficult to utilize it for F3A pattern maneuver competition, this is why no F3A flyer appears on the magazine with the 3D acrobatic planes almost of all are made in China manufacturers, this is the reason of very cheap price, 1/10 compared with the ordinary F3A fabricated ones. I'm sure that I would be an outstanding applicant for the competitions with a tail extended 3D acrobatic plane. I wanna see the friends faces that every one is surprised so much.

Endeavor





The cause of malfunction of OS 32F motor was found at last, fuel pressure leak at the 3H carburetor spray bar part. Hardened O shape rubber ring sealer was the criminal. This conclusion way obtained after disassembling all the fuel supply line including inside of the fuel tank and naturally all the rubber parts, fuel tank rubber cap also. After the countermeasures like these, smooth operation from lo-middle-hi speed was obtained on the test bench. Now, I'm prepared to burden this 32 motor system on Rookie 20 without any anxiety.

I should know why this fracture happened on the extended silicon exhaust tube immediately after I had recognized few days ago. I found some vibration deformation thickness change of the tube at a specific portion, exactly the same position as before! It is clear that there exist any exhaust interference that is an unique phenomenon that is utilized as a Tuned Pipe method. Remembering the past, the fuel main needle position was very unstable being influenced by pipe-in and pipe-out condition, this is why I was at a loss where the angle position of the needle valve should had been? As the adjustment of YS regulator system and lowest mixture tightening needle valve for slow mixture were almost fixed, I would be a successful flyer next opportunity.

As a big news, I bid big model airplanes the other day 30cc gas powered Gold Wing MXS-R. Breitling and Type B with 1910mm wing span, I'm going to come back to F3A field competition, the participation would be next year. I'll train myself to pass the exam to obtain the right to attend to All Japan F3A. OS 160FX motor has chosen as a power source for them and YS fuel pressure system would be applied to ensure constantly stable fuel pressure. Know-How and technology to do that have been piled enough for over 40 years.

I'm invited into Electric power source application by the chief of OS production engineer, so, one of MXS-R would be modified into an Electric Powered airplane that dependent on their technical support, judging from an information by young manufacture flyer Mr.H****, he is now making desperate efforts to make a suitable software for EP reduction system to meet with F3A competition uses. Also, I have some promise with the representative of the division of the company to be given the worthy datum with SD card for FUTABA 18MZ system.
Anyway, my way to the participation to F3A field is broadly and widely opened for me, as a next step, my own tough efforts are waiting from now.

Conceptual transition

I have long been bearing in my mind that I should never get into bigger model model motor than 10cc as a combustion cylindrical bulk because of the old regulation till about 30 years ago. And I was suppressing my internal desire to get into more bigger model airplanes, the bigger the model becomes the more stable flight is promised in accordance with the scientific theory of Reynolds number. I had the wagon the day before yesterday, the beginning of this phenomena had been triggered by purchasing of "Deca Air" by Hokusei model Co. in Kobe from my intimate friend with the same occupations each other and the necessity occurred to by newer bigger power source for that---I happened to bid an used OS 160FX at 1/3 price of new. Consequently, they are waiting for my next efforts to fly bigger model airplane. I feel I'm sinking into the quagmire of the chronic disease lasting since my childhood no way to be corrected nor to be healed.

Farewell to my lovely car!

Six buyers are coming soon to do the appraisal on SUBARU BRZ, it is thrown away because of it's unacceptable bad ride. In addition, my BC7 Legacy LSi US model would be done at the same time. But, remember here that the reason for throwing away BC7 is not because of any drawback but because I wanna change something in my own car life.  My exclusive car would be SXE10 TOYOTA Altezza that has been used only 25,000km. This Altezza was about to thrown away at the cheapest price by a heartless former owner who is leading lives together with me. It is too good to be deserted, in Japanese, "Mottainai".  Though I spent 4,000,000 yen ten years ago for SXE10 Altezza, the presented amount by the used car dealer now was only 150,000 yen, how come?
Today, all the SUBARU brand automobiles have disappeared in front of us, they all went taken off by the trader.
Something would change tomorrow, so I believe.
