Super Beetle steering gear box


Relatively smaller original caster design(2 plus minus 0,58 degree) might be the reason for the wondering phenomena of VW 1302 Super Beetle referring with common standard value of ordinary rear driving layout designed vehicles. 1302 has no mechanical power assist steering construction, so more caster inclination invite heavier steering action as imagined.  A woman should drive this automobile, not only a musculoskeletal man, the caster value and steering gear ratio might have been decided by the VW engineer with deeper considerations?
Worm gear construction of 1302 steering gear box was adjusted on backlash adjuster to eliminate excessive clearance yesterday and the stability while straight running has remarkably improved as to be acceptable for me, the rate of moved rotational angle is very slight as to 1 to 2 degree. This kind of backlash causes hysterisis phenomena leading to delay of steering corrections, so I feel better than before in every situation after adjustment yesterday. Lack of precise adjustment in steering connective linkage has become apparent as the wheel alignment and axle constructive geometry are correctly established. To make the tolerance narrower is still worth doing, because an ordinary driver and user have an only room that part.
Pictures shown here is the steering gear box for 1303 with angular stopper on the control arm that had been obtained from YaHoo Auction. Universal joint has unacceptable backlash on the cross connective portion, so this would be a void. Judging from the viscosity of the lubricant inside, some mixture of ordinary grease and gear oil could be obtained some adequate viscoelasticity in addition to Microflon powder. Unreasonable resistance is felt on the movement, so fully overhauling would be performed from now for the preparation of indispensable replacement parts. The wear out of steering gear box in 1302 and 1303 means the end of their lives, so rumored among the owners.
