An application of Microflon into trans-axle gear oil may do harm to the synchronizing mechanism.
Microflon could be regarded as one of a extreme-pressure additive and the shifting touch has changed into not so good but not so bad feeling, just changed.
This kind of phenomena is caused by the hitting of synchro-hub with spline gear before synchronization being finished, making noise. Once happened such kind of error would continue after that without any tendency to recover the inconvenience.
Especially in cold condition, oil film has been formed between ring gear and opposite gear taper portion, the chamfer part of synchronizer ring gear looses the engagement before synchronization.
This is not because of coefficient of friction but because of increased viscosity of oil under low temperature. Once noise making phenomena happens, the rate of distortion and ware the chamfer angle would be accelerated and never returned to an original good condition.
In case the change of the coefficient of friction, precise inspection of synchronizing ring gear angle and that of chamfer must be re-designed adapting with new circumstance.
So additive application into manual tras-axle oil does harm with no good results. Just an inspiration by a layman causes problems on earth, just an ignorance is nothing but a sin.
So, 2,5L of #90 gear oil containing Microflon additive inside of 4 speed trans-axle in VW 1302 Super Beetle would be replaced into pure same oil. Gear changing actions would be recovered after that. We must remember the existing of synchronizer gear coupling system.
As for automatic trans-axle consisting with fully coefficient of friction, no argument is necessary here as mentioned above.
