I just gave up to have excessive desires on newly designed C segment automobile produced by TOYOTA. I realized the limitation on rear arm supporting design with too much compliance. However precisely I might adjust and set the wheel alignments and constructive geometries, astringent steering was not obtained, NCP10 TOYOTA Vitz was the automobile. But no body of my friend complaint about this uncertain and pointless steering reaction, if the car goes straight. So, I was obliged to change my beliefs on automobile's steering reactions.

Judging from the reliable weather forecasting, almost of holidays are occupied by severe conditions ones. I must do servicing enduring windy, snowy and cold out side works. I make it a rule to take the situation as better than do nothing in spite of bad circumstances.

How about setting the D-Day on the end of coming January or on the beginning of February, Legal Inspection Test day obtaining license plates.

Almost of mechanical performances have acquired by finishing brake system, for the next horn and stopping lamp are waiting for me as electrical wiring checking. Though main muffler genuine parts is prepared previously, it bacame unnecessary for the time being. Exhaust tail pipes looked like sticked with rusting throughly and impossible to remove from muffler connections at the begining, but my desperate and consistent efforts made it possible to separate them on both sides.

New parts are not made of iron material but stainless steel special material. The oldest memory in myself 40 years ago came out the genuine standard value, setting length 170mm, the shinny pipes were set so firmly.

The coupler terminal was so fragile as to pinch to obtain enough pressure easily destroyed like decaying. The brass connector was replaced into new parts. Metal hardening phenomena must be the reason.

Residual tasks on VW1302

VW 1302 Super Beetle would be checked on the electric circuitry of horne and brake lamp. Then main residual procedure would be only on the emission control. Exhaust gas would be measured on two materials, Hydrocarbon and Carbon Oxide and Hydrocarbon, 4,5% and 1200ppm promptly, utilizing special device equipped in the TOYOTA dealer's factory.

Strut upper mounts including rear ones must be replaced at the same time if this task may be performed. The genuine parts number would be checked by Minami Osaka Kishiwada SUBARU.

Working place in my lab room #2 lacks the thermal fuse on oil pressure control solenoid valve by shortening for emergency.

The temperature of solenoid coil had been risen by water pilling on printed circuitry board leading to circuitry shortening.

Thermal fuse 185 degree must be replace instead of shortening, otherwise #2 is free from breaking fire dangers.

It was ultimately lucky to get out the clogged material in the brake pipe line, otherwise clogging phenomena should have obliged me to replace all the pipe lines. The procedure to establish brake system yesterday gave me the confidence to have cleared the maximum barrier on Super Beetle.

Next step is steering linkage, replacing some ball joint in hinge positions.

Short test running on this brake revealed VW 1302 Super Beetle let me peep some possibility of future life with this machinery with commuting to the heart. Right handle position and automatic trans-axle automobile obliges the driver use the specific function only a half of right side hand and leg. So, new commer VW with right handle and manual trans-axle gives me some healthy circumstance to use all of may hands and legs.

Though I'm prepared for the worst case to replace all the brake line pipes on VW 1302 Super Beetle, desperate trial efforts had drawn out the best result! Clogged chronic material came out from rear pipe connecter flange as shown in the photo.

Today this result made me hi,so evictions of buble and brake shoes precise adjustments were performed throughly. Test short running proved the inconvenience on wheel fitting while back gear is selected.

Brake light does not put on, check the wirings, horn also. Investigations are required on these problem and emission control must be checked by using timing light.

Even after the replacement of wheel cylinder on VW 1302 Super Beetle, oil pilling was observed inner surface of frontal right wheel. So, disassembling brake system would show the reason clearly this afternoon.

My motivation to go forward on VW Beetle servicing was not a little eliminated by the accident this afternoon, though brake fluid tank was filled with liquid enough, rear left cylinder does not react jetting! Few seconds were necessary to understand the cause of those inconvenient phenomena, meaning clogged brake pipe! Remembering disassembled wheel cylinders inside last time, there were many worse pieces of black rubber, then who would promise me about clean brake pipes on earth.

It goes without saying that every pipe line should be cleaned thoroughly as natural common sense.

Pipe line cleaning would be the tasks for tomorrow, reminding myself.

I'm fond of mechanical controled machinery rather than computer controlled ones, on the other hand I studied DSP(Digital Signal Processing) this morning, produce new image file between the datum and make the movie look more smoothly by adding newly invented by special hi-tech processor, fantastic with fascination! Anyway incredible progress has been established in LCD field.

Finally negotiations on OKINAWA started giving them some amount of money at last, best lubrication, best medicine and best children's sweet for settling down any quarrels no matter how justifiable their claims are.

In the situation of negative camber application on frontal axle, the same kind of problem may occur again, the way to go would be wheel spacer insertions with 8mm thickness.

Slowly and gradually the step of restoring VW Beetle goes forward.

About the renewal tires on BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model, Bridgestone Potenza RE 01:

All the pressure on 4 wheels were set at 2,4 kg/cm3, one week later checking proved 3 wheels showed 2,2 kg/cm3 except left frontal one at 2,3 kg/cm3. After adjusting at 2,4 kg/cm3 on both frontal wheel, left side tendency disappeared.

So even 0,1 kg/cm3 difference caused strange steering reaction.

The reason of this physical phenomena is the lateral displacement of ground touching areas of frontal tires, this can be regarded as same as lateral offset of frontal axle, in another way, the checking is easily performed by this intentional method, setting different tire pressures promptly.

I just remembered a consideration about the self-energizing effect on the leading and trailing drum brake system. Brake shoe supporting point on the adjuster has some tolerance radially about 15mm, so the touching point fluctuate according to the factor caused by grinding for setting adjustments. It's easily imagined that the difference of Radial distance invites that of the lateral vector leading to lack of balance on self-energizing effct when activated. Then what'll happen in the circumstance with diffrent brake power, yes dangerous wondering when the stopping power exerted by the driver unintentionally.

Changing standing point of view, the touching and pivot position on adjuster's radial diameter 15mm may affect the taste of braking phase, because the interval from the begining of braking stage to the tire slipping phase is the true braking phase.

Before I forget it throughly I write down the information yesterday about Arteriosclerosis.

I have some special planning on VW 1302 Super Beetle's handle, momo volks wagen boss #0248 is obtained from the YaHoo auction booth. Naturally some momo handle would be set on the boss with momo pitch 6 screws. As for me, I'm keeping the specific old handle, MAZDA genuine parts for Familia Rotary Coupe about 42 years ago, dad had bout for me as my first owner's car. So this memorious wooden handle would be set on my old Beetle again.

Considerations may be required to fit well including horn button hole adjustment.

Brake balance

The braking balance is deeply related another safety devices, ABS, ASCD(Anti Skid Control Device) and proportioning control valve. Without those sophisticated controls, the braking force balance between front and rear is very important, VW 1302 Super Beetle is the cace. Careful checking on specifications on brake system revealed the fact that the surface area of frontal brake shoes were increased by broaden the width from 40mm to 45mm depending on the increase of the 11AD 1600cc motor capacity(1200cc to 1600cc).

Though I planned to replace the frontal brake system into disk construction, another undesirable ploblems must be invited, so I determined to go as original drum brake on 4 wheels. Anyway accomplishment of brake system is the first, otherwise my Super Beetle cannot move even a meter.

The final brake system work would be performed tomorrow, for sure!

Leading & Trailing

Before I forget away I must write down about the important study on Leading & Trailing Construction Drum Brake. Though VW 1302 Super Beetle has no vacuum master to enhance foot brake pedal pushing power, I have been thinking that the reason was the back ground of inferior production technology or relatively lighter body weight, 870 kg. But the true reason of omitting vacuum master is the self-energizing effect caused by the leading side brake shoe. On the leading shoe the supporting position exists on the further portion of the inner circle of drum comparing with stopping power exerting frictional resistance by cylinder pushers. In another words the diameter of the supporting position in leading shoe is smaller than that of shoe surface and the difference of distance causes the outer vector when the shoe surface was activated mechanically. This outer vector is called as self-energizing effect.
There existed 1303 model with frontal disk brakes, so I hear, front and rear brake power balance must have been considered in combination with the brake master cylinder diameter balances, if changed the brake constructive design from drum brake system to disk brake one.

Like a phoenix

Front and rear wheel cylinders on left side were replaced on VW 1302 Super Beetle yesterday including brake shoes. Talking about the shoe fitting on drum brake housing, precise adjustment on lower adjuster points were required, in this procedure the more precise the better.
The residual works on brake system for this auto are right rear brake shoes replacement and braking surface finishing including frontal one and stop lamp switch sealing preventing leakage on brake master cylinder.
Though 40 years old and half dead automobile needs tremendous works to survive again on earth, step by step desperate efforts are overcoming difficulties.
Engine itself has no problem so the requirement "Running" and "Stopping" are almost fulfilled, left one is "Turning", steering linkage must be improved by replacing ball joints, parts are already kept.

Hard worker today

Worked I hard today in spite of lazy feeling all day long. I did many tasks, head light replacement into iodine lamp, Raydyot made in England with yellow bulb, but before actual replacement, I had obtained the important information about the circuitry of the couplers, comparing a originally settled sealed beam lamp with semi-sealed halogen lamp H4, the coupler are the same but the terminal positions are completely different, so the wiring adapters are prepared by Japanese lamp maker,Koito manufacturing Co..


My way is just change the positions of the terminals in the same coupler, it was successful by putting the common white at 9 o'clock position, yellow high beam at 3 o'clock, brown low beam at 12 o'clock promptly. Photo shows prior setting on the sealed beam lamp.

Different from Hella but English one at the same generation suits well, so I think?

Engine oil pilling on the muffler obliged me to remove head cover at left bank finding out the history of this 11AD motor, no unpleasant dirt was to be found around pretty locker arms, revealing this old VW Super Beetle was not used at downed, 30,000 km used was the true stroy.

Head cover sealer gasket was removed and cleaned to accept liquid silicon sealer application on both sides of gasket there.

So I did well today including wheel cylinder for front and rear left side with time consuming new drum brake shoes precise fitting.

Lazy

I have known about the BS RE-01 tire noise after the replacement on BC7 SUBARU Legacy LSi US model with Impreza GDB suspensions. Relatively noisy below 40km but above that no problem, soft compounded as it is, side wall hardness must be reinforced considerably. Ground contact capability is superior to former Eco tire, uncomparable on earth. Steering reaction is direct and sensitive with sensibility with reliable stability, no way to complaint.
