The Former Foreign Settlement of Kobe Heritage

We need not wait any argument on the opinion that it is impossible to discuss on The Former Foreign Settlement of Kobe until we investigate and consider about the historically outstanding and extraordinary The World Cultural Heritage city Kobe.

In the 100 years period of time from dawn to present, The Former Foreign Settlement existed at the central portion of Kobe, a town has been surviving with a lot of transitions from the twice of the World Wars to the economic decline and recent mourning  biggest Earthquake resulting complete destruction.

Rokko mountains behind of Kobe must have been watching over the history of the exotic and fascinating town and inhabiting in everything for these 100 years. No similar place is observed in the world except here. So, Kobe has a plenty of interesting and memorious stories scattered from Kitano to Bay areas such as Wind Cock house by a German trading merchant Gottfried Thomas.

Our government opened 5 bay towns after concluding the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with foreign countries in 1858, Hakodate, Niigata, Yokohama, Nagasaki and Kobe were the places. As Kobe was the second to Yokohama with 9 years later interval, not a few foreign trading companies rushed in Kobe for newly opened port.

Because of unstable political condition the date of opening Kobe was postponed from the January the 1st in 1868 for several years and the immigrant there were invaded into ordinary Japanese inhabitant in a very close relations in spite of an original idea of isolation avoiding conflict between them.

But this inevitable time lag took effect better to construct more intimate relationships with indigenous people compared with another opened trade ports. Foreigners there at that time must have spent time in good mood without isolative atmosphere in Kobe.
