McCOY 29 NOS




Golden age historical motor, McCOY 29 could be obtained without any bidding competition in Yahoo Auction at relatively cheapest price yesterday. Careful inspection proved that this motor has not any history of operation and any irreversible defect was not observed. In spite of long period of time after production, new condition has been maintained most unlikely.
Now, no problem exists to set her on Hal deBolt's "All American Senior" stunt model except a specific muffler setting adapter and Center of Gravity position adjustment.
I'll dream tonight flying U/C All American model with this Red Head McCOY 29 motor. The fuselage of her has been cut out from 3 mm balsa sheet already, let's proceed now!

L.M.Cox carburetor holder


Discreetly did I make up carburetor holders for L.M. Cox Medallion 15 & Tee Dee 09 for transforming throttle valve equipping R/C use. Shaft rotary intake system in these motors makes it possible if throttle valve might be positioned at the points. ENYA throttles are utilized for the purposes because of air flow adjusting screws in slow condition and their smaller shape and weight. Precision Lost-Wax Casting method is invited as before. Also, relatively big splay bar in these ENYA throttle rotating valves make it easier to adjust the adequate air flow amount at highest speed rpm, to put the throat area at the point of their suction capability.  I know it has much to do with the diameter of muffler end point diameter,not so easy to know but interesting. As obtained I a sophisticated device as shown the other day, some accurate datum sampling and analysis would be performed soon. I'm looking forward to test and check the condition with datum analysis.

OPS ULSUS 60 RCA



OPS 60 URSUS RCA motor was obtained from Yahoo Auction as usual, at extraordinary cheap price the other day. It looked like a typically worn out  junk motor, but it has no history of operation, with virgin P/C, tight and alive crank shaft bearings with no lusting internal construction, but with dusty head and cases, clogged Perry carburetor, distorted main needle valve, no other irreversible defect was observed, all of the inconvenience were corrected into original condition as a matter of fact. Also, ENYA 60-3B muffler was set in position safe with a slight modification. A bit earlier exhaust timing would allow a Tuned Pipe if I desire.
Crafts in 1970's like this URSUS motor are manufactured with some keen sense by skilfully excellent craftsmanship especially in the fitting between ABC piston and cylinder in addition to the stout and reliable construction. So, this motor would last me through my life or more over, if it would not be operated in critical condition like an airplane falling down accident or being in too lean fuel mixture.
This  OPS motor deceased and thrown away and forgotten for long period of time would be put into the sky by myself very soon like a Phoenix.
I recommend this motor with Schnurle scavenging combustion system as one of the best motor in the world even if compared with any other recent 60 motors.

Pilot Ace-B completed


Long lasting fabrication of Pilot Ace B has completed the other day.
The power source was changed from Enya 29 -4B to OS 32 FX at the last minute, because of a simple reason that the latter was obtained from Yahoo Auction at 1700 yen, very cheep don't you think?
The arrived OS 32  was dusty and clogged as usual, main needle valve was lost including broken holding stay bar connected with a rear back plate, plate was alive. I recognized the motor had been thrown away after the first flight accident falling down. The plug filament is clean like new, no piled carbon on the piston top surface was recognized, crank supporting bearings are alive without any backlash.
After cleaning and reforming the broken corner of destroyed needle supporting arm on rear cover plate, reassembled I the motor. Of course careful checking of distortion in the crank case and in the crank shaft was done before that.
Also, a new 31 H carburetor in my junk box was applied on the intake hall replacing the original one that has no main needle valve.
This miserable 32 motor used by some layman user and being forgotten for long time would survive like a phoenix, I'm sure that and have good confidence to pull out it's potentials because I have enough experience to get accustomed to OS 32 motor on a former model OS 32 F.

ASO 86th Regular Concert

Last Sunday was the day to enjoy myself utmost with the Classic Concert played by Ashiya Symphony Orchestra as the 86th Regular Concerts held twice a year at Kansai area. Their skill has remarkably improved year by year and it's capability is never second to some professional orchestras. Melody, rhythm and harmony were well balanced and they contributed to passionate sound at all. Every instrument was discerned independently, it was unusual matter. New faces in the players were recognized, it is a good notice so much.
I'm looking forward next one, though only a few days have passed since the last one now.

PILOT Ace Type B

Also PILOT Ace Type B is now under construction, that is the second generation of Ace series, cutting out of its fuselage is over and the stabilizer is almost fabricated.
Power source is an old designed ENYA 29 4B with plane crank shaft bearing, lighter one, I'm released from troublesome ball bearing maintenance. As I have never seen this motor actually under some perfect condition in the field, I dare choose this one in spite of heavier weight compared with recent high performance Shinyure scavenging lighter motors, must I pay attention on CG. Thanks to good covering film material, ORACOVER, I can proceed this kind of work freely without any stress like by Organic Solvent, Acetone.
I'm going to make use of the main wing of  TETRA ROOKIE 20 that has supreme performance with Laminar Airfoil designed by Mr. Tangiku, over 45 years ago had I some precious opportunity to fly and to enjoy Hinode Lead multi channel Radio model airplane with him at Muko Riverside in Hyogo Prefecture.

MK Star 15 & 60 motor



MK Star 15 designed by Masahiro Kato over 50 years ago is now under construction. As it isn't done from a kit but from pieces of balsa, it takes time and requires much effort. 80 % finished already, but not a few small works remain, I'm sure that it would come in time to next  Old Timer & Golden Age meeting held in coming Spring. For the power source of this model airplane, ENYA 20 with conventional cross flow scavenge would be invited, suitable or less power, probably, in case of poor power for stunt flight, OS 25LA would replace, it depends on the finished weight.

As OS 60 FSR motor appeared in Yahoo Auction I bid only at 520 yen like nothing, actually it was sold as a junk motor. After arriving to me, I knew the reason why it was sold at so lowest price, the carburetor holding screw 3,5mm hole was dead showing at the point in the picture. The former owner had bad habbit to screw in too tight all the screws even on back cover plate. All of them were loosened with heating method. Braking tightening power must have destroyed 3,5mm screw hole. Re-tapping with 4mm tools could recover the problem safe.
Crank shaft supporting front bearing was ill set, rear seal cover had not been removed and original bearing grease was left untouched. He did not understand the physical property of lubrication, just like a layman. It was lucky that the crank bearings on both side, front and rear could be usable after cleaning. Gas compression construction was not damaged.
Any way, it survived as a useful enough motor after full overhaul including carburetor.

MK Star 06 Power Source




A power source for MK Star 06 was selected as OS 11 CZ that is designed for car use, but the comparison of the weight between it and LM COX 09 Medallion obliged me to exchange and re-burden into the latter.  Actually, I was at a loss what to do with the Center of Gravity, the battery cell should be positioned just beneath the rudder position if it is meet with CG, how come?
A half weight of the motor, COX 09 Medallion wipes any anxiety and threatening about the problem, so made I up mind to change the power source without hesitation.
Arrived COX 09 motor was disassembled thoroughly as usual and a carburetor mounting part was fabricated with the same manner as that former invited on 15 Medallion. Throttle Valve is that for ENYA 09 this time.
Lost Wax casting method need to make up a wax pattern as shown in a picture. After investment procedure,melt light metal material would be cast under vacuum and high pressure circumstance condition.
As the meeting, Old Timer & Golden Age has been over now, no need to make haste, the procedure would be done one by one.
Also, a slight distortion in the fuselage was corrected after pealing out the covering film.

Enjoyable meeting at Uji Kyoto



Participating the meeting yesterday, had I the best time at Uji Kyoto, Old Timer & Golden Age Radio Controlled Model Airplane Meeting held by Kansai Model Association, so to speak KMA. Just a one talking communication with any modelers there made intimate and like long lasting friends each other. A few of them in the executive offices was one of my old friends and we had some opportunity to warm our old friendships. My thankful mail to them was immediately returned with regards.
An interesting affair an Auction was held and I bid for the purpose of just rising the price, but, unintentionally had I successful bid on a diesel motor, PAW 35R/C AC made in England. Though I have no interest about model Diesel motors at all, finger playing on this motor last night wake me up my habitual bad disease again, in addition, I bid several items in Yahoo Auction two diesel motors this morning, how come, my headquarter must get angry!

MK Super Tiger 102



Immediately after coming into my car this morning,had I a mosquito attack on my left arm, because of high humidity and residual summer heat, atmospheric condition outside is not  favorable. A big package of Mosquito coil ran short leaving a final envelope. We will have some occasional shower today so weather forecast tells.

A meeting being held at Uji Kyoto is coming across, "Old Time & Golden Age" prepared by KMA. D-Day is September, 25th.  I have to remember that relatively long distance driving should be done by myself, because I would leave early Kyoto around noon and turn back to Southern Osaka for stage shooting, my long lasting friend should play as the last stage.

As for my entry Radio Control models, only MK Super Tiger 102 has prepared for the coming meeting as a matter of fact, Pilot Fighter and MK Star 06 are not, almost but not perfect condition.
For the sake of making shift emergency mean, smaller fuel tank, 60 cc would be installed, I know it's too small for Cox Medallion 15. Modified needle valve takes effect without any inconvenience such as fuel leak or pressure leak.
All the rod for moving wing except motor control are connected with expensive 1,8 mm carbon material, extraordinarily lighter weight is the reason. 1 mm thickness Birch plywood is utilized for the horns on rudder and elevator with direct bonding method by gelly type Alfa Cyano acrylate material, strength and wear should be observed and followed up.

Two 60 motors


Two 60 motors were won in Yahoo Auction the other day. One of them is Super Tigre 60 ABC blue head with rear disc valve induction type, as a matter of regret, several amateur lane chest nut marks were observed. Distorted brass cylinder was so corrected with fine tool as to mover smooth at DC piston position, this error might be an original one such as chrome plating error or some thing. Main bearing re-positioning and tightening screw head correction were done. Thanks to my careful and desperate efforts, she have regained her original smooth movement safe. Recent Super Tigre has some tendency to give less clearance between a brass cylinder and piston top than before, the character is similar with Japanese OS ABC.
Another booty is Webra 61 Speed with Dynamix carburetor that is famous for Hanno Prettner' "Curare" in World Championship over 40 years ago.
Remember that Prettner designed carburetor has a fuel acceleration pump construction, so the transient from low to high was so quick incredibly.
As for my Webra 61 Speed, it's front housing was replaced into YS 60SR's one and it was used under fuel pressurized condition. It had a good performance with it's lighter case construction, on the other hand the combustion noise frequency was higher than other 60 motors such as YS 60SR and ENYA 60X.
Because I obtained these motors at some cheapest prices, I'm now in a mood of  good luck.

Suction capability

Bench motors testing gave me some necessity of deeper consideration about the relations between suction capability under the fixed burdening and the diameter of intake venturi. In short, bigger throat does not bring more power, because the requirement of throttle control is the smother transition between low, middle and hi operation. The fact as the upper description was proved on L.M.Cox 15 Medallion motor equipped with OS 25LA carburetor with 4,5mm throat venturi, probably, 3,5 to 4,0 mm might be suitable for the condition of setting Tornado 8 by 4 burdening. But remember here, changing of throat diameter is easily done by just closing a throttle valve at highest position adjusting the Travel rate of motor control on Transmitter. We have some tendency to pay attention only to low speed adjusting, but more attention should be done on highest position. Because, the main needle closing angular position affects deeply on the low speed control adjustment.
The modified main needle valve at a plastic fuel nipple position took effect enough and would endure in actual use, the purpose is eliminating the weight of original one and doing the setting space.
On the other hand, the throat venturi size of ENYA 09-3 with Tornado 7 by 4 was well invited and showed smooth transition of speed control from low to middle and middle to hi, the factory engineer's skilled technique was imagined, the research and development must have done so well.
The necessity to gather certain datum is some indispensable task on this critical researching title, I should carry RPM meter next time.
In addition, same theory might be constructed even on fuel pressurized system like YS regulator and Perry pump system. Deeper consideration should be done!

Events today

I missed some model airplane good in Yahoo Auction last night, a classic ENYA 45S for control line model motor and a main wing kit of YOSHIOKA Aladdin, wrong bidding price settings were the reason or much more enthusiastic modelers defeated me.

A female cicadas wandered into my hobby room by chance, so carefully I caught her gently and released to the direction Toms were fussing annoyingly, because she have to meet with him and to create their important next generation, more over, this is the critical reason for living things to exist on earth. She must have led her survival life under the ground as long as ten years and can live for only few days in outer world. I hope she could meet with some better half and do that in fulfill.

Early bird test driving of 11AD Super Beetle proved that she has a very little thrust discrepancy, that is within 5 minutes to the plus direction, so she goes left side if steering wheel is untouched while straight running. This is the first measuring and adjustment of wheel alignment and geometric axle construction, after the accident of the right side rear trailing arm inner pivot bolt falling down and lost.
This description is now being done with not a little shame .
Any way, the revenge would be performed today utilizing LASER pointer equipped level gauge made by myself for the purpose of measuring the wheel horizontal inclination and direction. Also, vertical inclination, so to speak Camber is done also DIY mechanical pendulum device reading a value 2 minutes angular value per 1 mm on the gauge.
It might be a snag, selfish and arrogant expression, I have a confidential accurate distinction in wheel alignment technology, "I am good and am not second to a Porsche factory sophisticate engineer."

Preparation for the Old Timer & Golden Age Meeting



Film coating process has been over on "MK Star 06" before long. The moving elements of 3 Golden Age are already prepared shown in a picture. The important information about the on board switch, free current flowing is not always proved especially if 3rd party parts were invited. So, I made up my mind to fabricate switch modules with proved 6 position Miyama toggle switches found in my junk box, NOS. Because, I prefer the fundamental reliability to  light weight at all under the use of gas model's combustion crank shaft knocking vibration. The report in the WEB site said, miss-contacting on the switching terminals might be the reason. Toggle construction with 2 ways of on/off circuitry is for safety proof.
Any way, some desperate efforts were required to make small model airplanes to the appearance form like ARF kits made in P.R.China. The price of them are not high but opposite.
From now, servos burdening, linkage setting, motor mounting and gears setting are waiting for 3 airplanes. Little period of time is remains before "Old Timer & Golden Age Meeting" at Uji Kyoto. Make myself haste, go!

Super Tigre 71 & OS 40 PS 15320


Some Yahoo Auction conscientious seller provided me of an ancient Super Tigre 71 motor at reasonable price the other day. It has no inconvenience such as clogging, lasting in bearings also in a piston ring portion and lance chest nut marks by a layman. It has been kept in good circumstance by enthusiastic mania with love. A taller plug terminal reminds me of many good memories in my younger period of life. The scavenge system is not a sophisticated one like Shinyure design, but conventional self scavenging one  with reflection plate on the piston top surface.
This motor would be set on a F3A stunt model, "Stock" designed by Mr. Yoshio Akizuki 35 years ago who was my most intimate friend in the field. He is also an  advanced researcher in GFRP propeller, actually he provided his products.
Though I have never met for long time, our friendship would be immediately remember again. He must be a good adviser if I might go into F3D world.

By the way, I also got an another motor, OS 40 PS that was specially produced only for F3D competition, 40 Pylon Racing, tens years ago, the factory designer had been already resigned because of age regulation in the company.
It was exhibited as NIB condition and at cheaper price with some reason. As it was provided as a established kit, including Tuned pipe, metal graved one piece beam mount and a machined spinner.  So, without important other goods was the reason for cheaper price. No anxiety exists, because my junk box has a Tuned pipe for F3D.
Finding out some extaordinary tight piston and cylinder fitting at TDC, Mr. Haneda replied in telephone, it's a normal factory setting condition, turning drive plate by finger power is impossible like a car racing ABC motors. Higher combustion temperature at higher rotation might cause more thermal expansion at TDC portion? This is why the tighter P/C fitting design for OS 40 PS 15320 is invited that rotate over 20,000 RPM?

"MK Star 06" almost completed

The general balsa figure of "MK Star 06" was almost completed yesterday, main gear and nose gear are not yet. Film coating procedure would be done on 3 small model airplanes, residual ones are "MK Super Tiger 102" and "PILOT Fighter". There are plenty of rolled films from some closed R/C shop last year, so any color combination will do as my choice.  In order to obtain the indispensable visibility from a distance about 150 m, some fluorescent color would be applied on main wing upper surfaces similar with the Rising Sun flag pattern.
I'm now considering about the power source of Star 06, Enya 09-4, OS Max 10 FSR or Cox 09? If Cox 09 is invited, either Medallion or TeeDee, exactly the same procedure done on Medallion 15 would be induced, carburetor holder one-off hand making with lost-wax casting method.
Any way, there are several high walls in front of me to be overcome, desperate effort would be exerted dreaming of being an applicant for "Old Timer & Golden Age Meeting" held at Uji Kyoto in this Fall.
To tell the truth, I have no air-conditioning system in my Hobby room, how come working at over 36 degree Celsius temperature atmospheric condition?

MK Star 06




An affirmation program by Lou Tice is lasting in my mind for as long as a half and one month and my emotional condition has been changed into better gradually.
Stable and calm daily time passing is comfortable for me for these 5 days, the absence of my sun in working place might be a reason, because is now making a trip in Hokkaido riding his favorite BMW Bike. But, noisy and restless working time would start from this Friday, awful and miserable so much, it's a secret, remember?

I'm now concentrating on Star 06 construction. Super Tiger 102 and PILOT Fighter were almost done leaving some film coating procedure.
The airfoil shape of Star 06 is symmetric one also with zero degree dihedral like a Pylon Racer, in addition full planking construction, that is the most unlikely for this size,  is invited in spite of 40 gr weight addition.

3 Golden Age model airplanes



3 Golden Age model airplanes are now under construction. "Super Tiger 102", single channel controlling trainer designed by Jumpei Kato in OSAKA who guided me in the field for as long as 50 years. "Star 06" also single channel airplane done by Masahiro Kato, the representative person in the Golden Age and the former champ, who appears in U-Tube recording a film in '50. It was flown by me but was destroyed at the first flight because of lack of rubber power for Escapement mechanism, too much signal application was the reason, remembering, the motor was LM Cox Tee Dee 049. Though the main wing of 09 size planes would be make use of that of TETRA Rookie 10, asymmetry airfoil, it would be newly reconstructed from the beginning also aileron system would be equipped.
"PILOT Fighter" single channel also, that was manufactured by myself when I was 10 years old, but it was destroyed by some unexpected accident before taking off.
These model airplanes designed over 50 years ago are preparing for "Old Timer & Golden Age" meeting held in Spring and Autumn every year at Uji Kyoto. Suppose, if they are build up from some Kit condition, it's not difficult tasks for me, but cutting a piece one by one from scattered scrap balsa takes time and desperate efforts. I'll do that to be an applicant with at least two of them.

Another Medallion 15


Being gaining momentum, did I it, exactly the same manner was done on another Medallion 15 also obtained from Yahoo Auction. Needle valve system was my own modified one like a former Medallion, 10 gr weight reduction is worth doing for relatively smaller model airplane. Generally, main needle angular position does not change so apparently if the break-in procedure had been done adequately and both the propeller and the fuel are not changed into another ones. So, the needle valve I have applied here is not always inconvenient modification by a selfish user, any way the result of these modified LM Cox Medallion 15 R/C would be reported very soon.

LM Cox 15 Medallion throttle valve set in position







Light metallic material casting has processed yesterday and fit in position to set up OS carburetor as shown in the photos. Thanks to the precision casting technology, it fit as desired. Thin paper would be inserted on 4 fitting positions, between crank case and carburetor holder F/R, crank case and carburetor and rear cover plate.
Though I planned to make use of the original needle valve assembly set in 25LA, 10gr weight led me to set a needle at the conventional position as a photo. 2mm pai bis was utilized with sharpening on tip. Air leakage checking would be done on the test running test. Tornado 9-5 or 8-6 propeller would be used for the test running. Depending on the power at that time, one more Schnurle port would be added as TeeDee model by grinding the internal surface of residual position on the cylinder. Compression ratio might be changed by making the head bottom surface down?
This motor, LM Cox 15 Medallion R/C would be mounted on "Super Tiger 102" single channel control model designed by Jumpei Kato brother of former Champ Masahiro Kato.
